I'm thankful my parents bought a house in a safe area, in a great neighborhood that was full of young families. There was a whole bunch of kids around to play with, and we'd roam from yard to yard without an adult following us around. I was also free to take my bike and go exploring for hours on end.
I'm glad I grew up in a time when parents weren't terrified that their kids would get snatched. I don't know if it happened less frequently back then or if we are just more aware of it now, but I had all kinds of freedoms to play, adventure, roam, be home alone, etc. I think we learned more self-responsibility and self-reliance than kids do these days.
I'm grateful my grandparents had a summer cottage in southern Maine, near the beach, and we could go visit as a family for weeks- or months- at a time in the summer. I didn't appreciate it then, because what kid wants to leave their friends at home in the summer and go someplace where they didn't know anyone, but jeez... beach days, climbing apple trees, reading whenever we wanted, cousins and neighbors visiting and playing in the pool and around the BBQ... such great times. There were also a plethora of summer job options for high schoolers, regular, full-time summer jobs where you could put away some real money instead of just babysitting. BIGGEST financial mistake my siblings and I ever made was selling that property after my mom died.
