Three petals + one stem =When you plant with fun, you never know what memories will bloom, Day Five
Date: May 12th, 2003
AM Plans: Magic Kingdom and ride our favorites one more time; Mum and T Rose leave for home at 1pm
Lunch: Pete and I enjoy the Fifties Primetime Café
PM Plans: MGM for Pete and I after exploring WL; quick trip to DTD for some last minute shopping; leave MCO at 9:45pm and arrive home at 11:22pm.
When Mickey rings us today, we slide out of bed with bittersweet feelings-so much to see, but we still have to leave for home. After taking time to pack and arrange our transportation (Mears for T Rose and Mum; TTC for Pete and I), we take one last look at our pretty room, wave goodbye to prayer angel baby and brace ourselves against the waves of humidity that roll over us as we trudge the short walk to our bus stop. We have talked non-stop about being chosen as family of the day and believe we have a chance at it in our semi-matching navy (white for Pete) Mickey shirts. We also have a secret weapon-confetti poppers! On the bus ride to Magic Kingdom we sit near a family of four (mom, dad, and two young girls) who are on their very first day of their very first trip to WDW! How special! We gush over them a bit (anyone need a babysitter?) and spend the whole bus ride sharing our secrets and must-dos. They are really nice and seem pretty organized (with 2 PSs planned per day wow! Hope they wanted to eat that much in the heat!) I am still curious how their trip went! (Hope you guys had fun!)
Unfortunately some other family (with non-matching T-shirts, mind you!) was chosen not only as family of the day but also to ride with Mickey and his gang on the train ride to open the park! (So not fair!) We love the opening celebration to Magic Kingdom-its so festive and magical. As everyone counts down to park opening, we sneak out our poppers and pull the strings, releasing a small popping sound with streams of confetti! Yippee!
On to Fantasyland to ride Peter Pan oh, wait! Mum and Pete are sniffing their way to the Main Street Bakery for their breakfast fix so T Rose and I go browsing (and buying) around the Emporium. After stuffing themselves with French toast loaf, orange juice, danish, and coffee, we drag them onward. Its time to ride Peter Pan! Although were sad that our other Fantasyland favorite, Winnie-the-Pooh, is closed for rehab, we bounce (in Tiggers memory) toward Splash and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. After a ride on the train we snag our favorite left side ride on Space Mountain and score our way through Buzz where Mum (who is typically laser-challenged) beats us all including Pete (who has never scored less than 3 gazillion!)
We give her the much-deserved round of applause and head for Caseys for our last meal together (Mum and T Rose end up with food from Cosmic Rays after finding that the Plaza Pavilion is closed.) While waiting for Pete to order (just a very large drink when I find out that Caseys doesnt serve chili cheese hot dogs), I have a magical encounter with two small children. It starts with a little voice piercing my consciousness. Maam, do you trade? the little girl (~5-years-old) whispers as she shyly glances at my rather heavily laden lanyard. I crouch down to her level, swallow my first trade jitters and say Sure only I wont trade my Halloween pins-theyre really special to me. As she gives my pins the once over, I met her older brother (~6 years old) and her mom who makes no qualms about the fact that I dont have to trade with her kids if I dont want to. Me?? Not trade with these cuties on my very last day at MK?? So what if I had said that I would never trade! Its only when she points confidently to my cherished Snow White pin that my hands falter slightly but only slightly, mind you!
I debate whether or not to kiss it goodbye but decide instead to focus on the little girls glee-That was my very first pin trade, she shares proudly, and I choke back a tear. Mum was right when she told us, Its better to give than receive.
My magical moment is thrown only slightly akilter when the little boy points to my lanyard and asks (with practiced angelic-ness, Im sure) Can I have a Halloween pin? (What does this kid think I am a softie?) With help from his mom, we steer clear of the untouchables and proceed to trade for something more generic.
When T Rose and Mum arrive with their food, I point out the kids and send her along for more trades. When she returns (minus gasp! Her cherished Mulan in the Hun outfit pin!), T and I share a laugh over the kids excitement with pin trading and a tear over our beloved pins...Who knows where they are now? (P.S. If you have my Snow White pin, please give it back.)
After catching the wonderfully energetic and character-laden Cinderellas Surprise as well as our favorite Clang! Clang! Clang!-went the Trolley dancers down Main Street, we begin a slow sulk toward the CBR bus stop. T Rose and Mum have to leave!
To be honest, I only had to pry T off the sidewalk once
really! Even though we have more return trips planned, it is never fun or easy to leave MK in the middle of the day for home! Yuck.
After many hugs, kisses, smiles, and tears, we bid them Adieu! Even though its strange to be without our other half, Pete and I decide to make the most of our day. The plan? Head to Wilderness Lodge, of course! After a wonderfully relaxing and scenic boat ride from the MK and feasting our eyes on the splendor of the WL, we are hooked! We wander aimlessly about the hotel, drooling over the scenery, pool area and lobby. Someday we vow we will live here!
After prying ourselves out of the evil clutches of a DVC salesperson, we take a long leisurely bus ride to MGM. Our first item of business eat at the Fifties Primetime Café. We have a brief wait of only 10 minutes for a table and then are led to a back table where we enjoy chicken Caesar salad and pot pie along with smores (Mine! All mine!) and ice cream. Our waitress Flo comes across as a short-tempered "older sister" type who, nonetheless, is charmed into submission by our goody-two-shoe behavior. (Pete even draws her a picture brown noser!)
We roll ourselves out of the restaurant and spend a surprising amount of time at MGM (purportedly Petes least favorite park)-watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, smiling to the movie at One Mans Dream and browsing leisurely through all the specialty stores on Hollywood Boulevard. We debate against watching the Stars and Motorcars parade and decide instead to make a quick trip to DTD for some last-minutes shopping. While Pete gawks enviously at the Pin Traders store, I storm the World of Disney and then go wild with Mr. Potato Head (Disney style!) at the new Once Upon a Toy store.
After all that running around, we are stunned to see darkness befalling us. Its time for us to meet our TTC driver and begin the painful process of leaving our World. Though wed love to plant our roots here, we know deep inside that fun weve had will bring blooms of happiness every time we think back on this trip!
