Threads marked as read when they're not

I don't know if this is a forum default setting or if it's something we can change ourselves (haven't found it in my settings). But I find it quite annoying that if I log into the forum to read new threads and replies, I can't do it without having a lot of time on my hands. What my problem is, is that if I log into the forum and say someone calls me and it takes 10 mins for me to get back to check the forum, then suddenly all the threads since my last visit/activity is marked as read. Is it possible to change this in any way?

I agree completely! Wish it would only mark as read if you actually go into the thread. Because of this, I sometimes find myself not wanting to log on to the DIS if I know I don't have a lot of time. A fix would be great! :thumbsup2

*bump*

Isn't there anything that can be done with this? I love this forum, but this one little thing is so annoying.

And here I thought it was just me.

While I'm wishing is there anyway to have a request new posts for a category like DVC? The Disboards is a very large forum and truthfully it would take me way too long to read all of the new posts.

Is it possible for a member of staff to reply to my question please? I find it incredible that I haven't got a proper reply yet! I've done some digging through google as this is a vBulletin board and this is what I've found:

You can not disable it for individuals. However, you can try a different type of marking in vboptions > General Settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type

This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.
Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.

This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.
Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.

This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.
Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.

This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.

This reply is from 2008, so a little bit old, but I would think it's highly possible for the site to change the settings for this. Because the way it is now makes it incredibly hard to keep up with this forum, and it makes me spend less time here as I just can't keep up when I don't know what threads I've read and not and how much of a thread I've already read.
