There's a large thread currently running on the Community Board called "What's so special about the missing British Girl?" which some of you may want to look at. A post by someone called Legalsea which is on page 7 has made my blood boil. And many others just have to be read to be believed.

I'm not trying to stir anything up and I'm not going to make any further comment as I know that this is a highly emotive subject. Just take a look.

Um!

I posted a thread on the US Board a few weeks ago with a photo and I was surprised that there had been coverage of it in the US. Sadly everyone seemed to know the circumstances in which she'd disappeared which, as here seems to be the major talking point.

Great posts on the thread though guys - I've nothing more to add to what you've said

it is difficult to understand how the story is being covered over there, a lot of people seem to pick up on VERY valid points like why the parents have left their other kids to go and see the Pope. A lot of people seem to really be having a dig that its all down to the parents being docs, white middle class etc and saying it wouldn't get so much coverage if they were black, poor, unemployed. I really don't know if it would or no, as far as I remember the parents of Sarah Payne and Jessica and Holly weren't hardly as well off and that had a good coverage.

There have been a couple of posts on there from uk people putting posts on there with links and most were ignored, then a few days ago someone else started a thread which made me cross...i'm sorry but it's times like these that make me cross as some people, especially people on that board just come across as very selfish and if it doesn't happen in America it's no importance. I know not all people are like that just certain ones.

I have already been over to the thread and contributed, and what started out as a thread with a valid point has turned into something else entirely, as is often the case on the DIS, but it makes an interesting read from a sociological point of view;)

I think the main reason people are airing their views is that now the intial shock of what has happened has worn off people are starting to ask how it happened in the 1st place.

whilst we should all be non-judgemental...very few of us actually are 100% of the time and its very easy to say "well thats not how i run my life, so it must therefore be wrong"

It would seem that it is ilegal to leave children on their own in the USA. In fact they seemed so angry that it was another reason I cancelled our ADR for Victoria and Alberts in case it was ilegal to leave a 13 year old on their own and I was thrown into prison!! I did ask what was the legal age but no one could give me an answer.

I am amazed at their anger at this couple. but I have also noticed how angry they seem to get about underage drinking, which when I was young everyone seemed to do here in the UK.

No one should have to go through what the McCanns have gone through and it makes me really sad that everyone is so angry with them and not the pervert that took her.

I get annoyed because yes they did wrong leaving those kids on their own, we all know that, but the focus should not be on the parents doing wrong now.Its all about finding their daughter, and these days with so much access to the media then they should use everything in their power to bring attention to their daughter.
They must be being advised on their every move and if it brings her back, then the more publicity the better.
maybe i should of posted this on that thread!!

I've quit arguing on it anymore, said my piece and it's just going round in circles. I'm glad the uk dis board doesn't get in such big debates!

yes agreed, they know how to argue big style :)

That's the main reason I like our Community Board ~ Nice and friendly and very supportive.

Prefer to leave the arguing for the outside world.

Whilst I can't begin to fathom why the McCann's left their children alone (it was the first thing I said when the news broke), I struggle to feel anything but compassion for them now. I'm shocked that so many people (and I'm not just talking about the contributors to that thread) can feel such venom towards them.

I was itching to go through that thread and pick it apart post by post, but common sense prevailed in the end. :coffee:

I'm with deb on this one. Yes, I have had my own thoughts about the McCanns actions regarding leaving their childrend and I do think that there is still more to this story than meets the eye. But it seems to me that everyone on that thread (witht he exception of very few) has missed the point entirely - a little girl is missing, maybe even dead and, regardless of the rights and wrongs, that is a tragedy.

Although (couldn't resist), even I have to admit that Mrs McCann does look very well turned out - not sure that I would under the circumstances :sad2:

I agree with you, DH and I were talking about it earlier in the week and i think there is something else that we haven't been told. I can't begin to imagine what they are going through and maybe they have gone onto auto pilot and are trying to keep it together for their other kids, but if that were me and it was Shelby that was missing I think they would have to sedate me. There's no way that I could be acting normal.

Prehaps their just holding it together for the media, i mean we only see them for bits of their day, alot of people can put on brave faces. Also it has been a month, maybe as you've said theyve gone into auto pilot, people deal with greif in different ways i suppose.

Whatever the rights and wrongs are of leaving a child on their own etc it is the person that took her that needs to be found and punished, the McCanns will be punishing themselves already and what they are going through is no doubt much worse than jail.

I agree!

This thread is really making me cross, and i try to ignore it but honestly!!

The gutter press in this country go so far that you can understand some people feeling like it's OTT. Yesterday The Sun's front page was a story of how a butterfly landed on the Mum's hand before she was going to meet the Pope and had a picture of a butterfly.
