Last time we were there, ut looked very nice and was wondering how the food was?? My whole family enjoys mexican foo but really didn't care for Cantina de San Angel counter service!
TIA!

long ago it was very good and more authentic but then it went to mexico by way of taco bell. i think they changed the menu again so maybe they have improved. the atmosphere is lovely imo although a little darker( like i wish i had a flashlight to read the menu dark) than it need be. hopefully the food is improving since we used to love it. last time we went the food was pretty close in quality to the cantina so if you didn't like that....

Last year, after many years of wishing, we splurged on a dinner. The atmosphere was wonderful (we were seated right at the railing overlooking the 'river') but the food was just ok. I'm glad we finally tried it, but I do not think we will go there again.

We enjoy eating there but didn't like Cantina de San Angel counter service. If you don't like the menu for dinner, they do have more of the taco, burrito type items for lunch.

We had a bad experience there. Food was not very good and the service was really bad..

Weak food, rushed service, high prices....other than that, its great!

Wow, we must have really hit them on a good night. We hadn't eaten here in ten years because of a bad experience on a early trip, but ventured in last April for a wonderful dinner. The food was fresh, well-seasoned and delicious. The service was attentive and the atmosphere was beautiful. We were a party of 5 Louisiana adults who are pretty accustomed to excellent Mexican food, as there are several good restaurants of this type in our hometown, so we weren't expecting much... but were very pleasantly surprised. Perhaps they have changed chefs or menus? I don't know the reason why it was much better for us than for others in this thread, but we do plan to return to San Angel during our trip this December. ~Ev

We've eaten there twice and really enjoyed it both times. We tend to eat a lot of mexican food at a very "authentic" family owned restaurant near our house, so we tend to be picky about our mexican food. I honestly didn't find San Angel to be sub par in any way. My biggest complaint is how close the tables are squished in together. It can make getting in and out of the restaurant an adventure. Our server on our last trip there was super nice, she even offered to comp me my drink (a mexican beer I was unfamiliar with) if I didn't like it.

We'd definitely go back!

We were just there in early March, 7 of us including 2 teenagers and a child. The chips and salsa they brought to the table were excellent, I ordered tortilla soup and nachos off the appetizer menu and was happy with my dinner. Everyone else ordered off the entre menu and had mixed results. It definitely isn't Taco Bell, but everything seemed fresh. I don't think we'll probably go back, but it's worth a first try.

And it's DARK there. Very DARK. Did I say it was DARK yet? Very DARK.

DARK.

Bring a flashlight so you can tell the chile relleno from the mole. Safety first! :)

I love the atmosphere here. It's definately dark as Bicker mentions! We prefer the lunch menu. The food is definately not authentic in any way, but the atmostphere is nice and the food is usually tasty and adequate. Its a great break from the heat.

I've eaten there a few times and have enjoyed it. I always thought that the atmosphere was a little better than the food but I have never had a bad meal there. It is traditional mexican and not the tex-mex that alot of people are used to.

If you don't like the counter service, I would'nt try the sit down service . All I can say is, it was a let down. I think they microwave the food there... Oh well ! I still love to visit , just wont eat there again.

My two cents....... ;)

I actually love both the counter service (which I like best in Epcot) and the sit down restaurant.

I love the atmosphere, but it's always MOBBED!! Even when you make a PS, you wait in a line 12 people deep just to let the hostess know you're there.

Last year, we went and I had the Chef's Special, which was Duck in some kind of special sauce and it was AMAZING! But I went again in December and ordered a shrimp/pasta dish, and it was quite bland.

The margaritas are disappointingly weak. Taste like lime-ade.

This restaurant to me is all about atmosphere. The food is merely so-so in my opinion, but the space itself it lovely. :)

We've been several times. The setting is lovely. The mole used to be really outstanding, but had slipped considerably the last time I had it. The service has always been rather poor.

LOVE the atmosphere - watching the ride boats is fun. Food isn't impressive. (Yes, bicker, it IS dark, but we like it anyway.:)) We'll go for a drink in the "lounge" area, now. But we don't eat there. And it's usually packed.

We went for lunch this last trip and loved it. I just posted a review. It may have been that it was just what we needed at the time we needed it, but it was one of my favorite dining experiences of the trip. The atmosphere was wonderful. After being there for a little while I totally forgot I was in Orlando at mid day. It was very dark, I asked DH if it seemed to get lighter and darker or if my eyes were just adjusting to it, not sure. If you really want to read the menu, bring a flashlight, or you could just guess at something like I did. It was not crowded when we went, but I did notice that the tables were very close and I would probably not have enjoyed it as much had it been crowded. Good luck to you.
