Thoughts on DVC making the points uniform on all days.......

Reviewing the new Hawaii point charts that were just released, I am wondering if the DVC will be reallocating once again. This time it seems there is a strong possibility that all nights will require the same amount of points. With the 2 recent reallocations, it appears that this may happen. Thoughts??

They may or may not be working towards that goal. Remember, though, for Hawaii travelers rarely go for "just a weekend" because it is a minimum 5 hour flight from the mainland. Unlikely members will be tempted to go to Hawaii for a 3 day weekend, or that locals will pull the weekend demand on the resort like they may in WDW.

Also remember that WDW cash resorts just started charging more for weekends this year, so WDW is seeing higher weekend demand than weekday demand.

Given that the travel patterns for WDW (and all of mainland USA) are probably quite different than the normal travel patterns for Hawaii vacations, the level point chart may be unique to Hawaii for several years. Also remember that it is a preliminary chart, and could change even after sales start and before the resort opens, as we saw at BLT.

Just my personal opinion, I think this is only based on the location and travel patterns anticipated for the location. It indicates that the usage pattern is expected to be fairly evenly distributed across the days w/out concern of DVC owners in Hawaii, or others willing to make short trips to Oahu, making serious dents in the weekend inventory.

hawaii is different than orlando IMO.

maybe it's because i'm on the east coast but i just don't see hawaii as a weekend destination. lots more people can drive to orlando on a moment's whim than can swing by oahu...

there will continue to be some difference in weekends for the stateside resorts IMO.

Although people like to use weekends to extend their vacation days, it is always cheaper to fly on weekdays to Hawaii and that may even out the occupancy trends.

I agree that Hawaii is different and that explains the point chart.

But just in case anyone is interested in how other timeshare systems work, here are some of the major companies that I am familiar with.

Hilton (HGVC): Fri, Sat, and Sun are twice as many points as a Mon, Tue, Wed, or Thu.

Hyatt: a 3-day weekend stay is about twice as many points as a 4-day mid-week stay.

Marriott: They've announced a new points based system. Point differentials between weekend and weekday varies by resort location.
Marriott's Ko Olina resort (Aulani's nearby neighbor): Fri and Sat range from 40% to 50% more than a weekday.
Marriott's Orlando resorts: Fri and Sat range from 100% to 150% more than a weekday.

I didn't realize the Hawaii points chart had been released. Can someone direct me to it?

Don't believe equalizing weekend /weekday points is coming to other WDW resorts. The point changes. lowering weekends and raising weekdays, made at the other resorts was done over two years, 2010 chart and 2011 chart. The total change per night that they can make in any one year is 20%. The two year change resulted in a total change under 30% for a night with most of that change done in the first year (where there were a number of nights where the change came very close to 20%). They could have easily done more in the second year and reached that equality of weekdays and weekends without violating the 20% per year rule if their intent was to actually make weekends equal to weekdays.

With WDW resorts they have the risk of skewing demand toward weekends if weekend and weekdays are equal because members from Florida, Georgia, Alabama could purchase for and drive for weekend trips. That is not a real risk in Hawaii (whose population is very small in comparison to those southern states). Most of Hawaii's members are going to come from continental US or the far east and flying just for a weekend is not a common activity.
