Thoughts about new CDC guidelines and how it might affect your Disney vacation.

The CDC stated that if you have had the vaccine you are unlikely to spread covid to others.

I’m confused, do we trust CDC and the science now, or do we not? The states and locals that said to trust the science from CDC and ridicule everyone that didn’t trust the science, are now denying the science based guidance from CDC.

45 days ago the CDC director was crying on tv crying about the impending doom, and has now done a 180.

After reading 15 pages of posts, I am confused.

Did CDC say EVERYONE no longer needs to wear masks??? I thought the new rule only applies to the fully vaccinated ones.

Disney makes outdoor mask-wearing optional for everyone because it is impossible to verify people's vaccination records in FL. But that doesn't mean that CDC recommends EVERYONE to not wear masks.

This is what my wife and I keep discussing. Last year CDC says wear masks, everyone masked up instantaneously and believed the CDC and science etc. Now they say you're good without it if your vaccinated, and everyone is questioning it, lol.

I think this whole thing is just a giant social experiment just to see how quickly people respond to rule changes. Not Covid, but the masking and other rules.

You have to remember they are still learning about the virus. When I was taking my continuing education classes on it last year, every week, they were changing what they thought or knew. As more time goes on, recommendations might change again. I know it’s frustrating and sometimes contradictory. But everyone is learning and there’s still that learning curve.

I’m not questioning the science. I’m questioning those around me. How am I supposed to know who is and who isn’t vaccinated? Because you know people will lie to get out of wearing the mask. And though I’m vaccinated, I have people in my life who haven’t yet been vaccinated. I know the likelihood of me getting it and transmitting it to them is low, but I’m still not willing to take that chance. And the vaccination rates in my state are still not high enough for me to feel comfortable completely ditching the mask. So I’ll continue wearing it at work and when I go out shopping. Outdoors, I’ll go without. I’m just not ready to go back to “normal”, whatever that is anymore.

I don't think too many people are questioning if it's safe to be maskless if you're vaccinated. We've learned enough now to know that the risk is very low, but it did take time to get the data on that, especially to confirm it still works well against the variants.

I think most people are questioning if it's safe to remove public mask requirements considering the extremely high likelihood that unvaccinated people will lie about it. Sure the vaccinated will be fine, but you've got the unvaccinated kids and also the risk of a spike as all the unvaccinated unmasked infect each other. Hopefully we've reached enough herd immunity based on the declining case numbers to prevent too many completely needless deaths, but we don't' really know.

It's also two very different risks from not following CDC guidance on this so it's not remotely comparable. Last year if you don't mask up, you risk is spreading Covid to the pole around you and killing 585k people. Now if you still mask up despite being vaccinated you... uh.. make your face unnecessarily warmer?

To the bolded part, the answer is you don't. And if you're vaccinated, it shouldn't matter - since as you said, the odds of you as a vaccinated person both contracting Covid and spreading it to someone else, is basically zero. If it makes you feel more comfortable to continue wearing a mask then you absolutely should. But there is no reason to question those around you.

(For context: I have been fully vaccinated since February and I strongly support vaccination for everyone who isn't medically incapable of getting one.)

The biggest problem is that most of the US population are NOT vaccinated and the new CDC guidance only applies to the vaccinated population. According to the CDC data, 37% of the U.S. is fully vaccinated and that includes 47% of adults. So the new guidance does not apply to a majority of the U.S. and it doesn't even apply to a majority of adults. It is dangerous for the unvaccinated population to behave as though they have immunity. And at Disney it seems like they will be opening the doors for people to break the rules. People will remove their masks outside and then "forget" to put them back on in the ride queues. And CMs will have to constantly remind guests to but their masks on inside. This all on the heels of news that they are reducing distancing guidelines from 6 feet to 3 feet in some places. It was simpler when the rule was: wear your mask unless you are eating, drinking, or in a pool. The truth is, this pandemic is still happening and it is still killing people so if you are not going to get vaccinated, then you should have enough respect for human life to put on a mask. It is pretty simple. We went to Disney World last July when they reopened and yes, of course, it was hot and wearing a mask was uncomfortable at times but I didn't want my actions to cause someone else to get sick and potentially die when all I had to do was wear a mask.

We will be heading to Disney World in 11 days with a party of 6. All 3 adults traveling are fully vaccinated. Our 13 year old has gotten his first shot and will receive his second dose 2 days after we return. But my nephew and my youngest child are not vaccinated yet. We had 1 child (my nephew) join our group at the last minute and even though he is old enough for the vaccine he has not gotten his first dose yet. (Hoping my brother and sister in law can get him an appointment.) Our daughter is too young to be vaccinated even if we could get her an appointment. So, in an effort to protect the people in our party who aren't vaccinated and the unvaccinated public, we will wear our masks all the time unless we are stationary/distanced eating or drinking, or in the pool. We are just happy to be returning home to Disney World amid this year of isolation and loss. We are more than happy to wear a mask if it means we can be out in public safely, enjoying the most magical place on earth.

Our plan too - we will be there in 2 weeks

When inside or waiting in the ride queues, everyone (whether vaccinated or not) must still wear a mask. Anyone who purposefully "forgets" to put their mask on in the queue would likely be inclined to do that anyway when the rule was masks outdoors as well.

So this policy change really doesn't do anything with regards to your exposure in lines (with the possible exception of reducing distance to 3 feet), because "rule breakers" were going to break the rules, even when they were more stringent on everyone.

While outdoors, you (collective) can reduce your exposure by keeping distance from others (difficult to do in some spots, I know... but those should be moving quickly through a choke point where you would only be around those people for a few seconds in passing, and people could choose to put on a mask just to wade through that crowd until they can distance again).

Inside and in queues, everyone should still be masked, so you have the same risk level in those places that you had with the old mask policy.

I had Covid in March.

I will be happy to get vaccinated when someone can prove to me that your vaccine antibodies are better than my naturally acquired antibodies. 🤷‍♀️

I will be one of those scary unvaccinated people waking around without a mask when the mandate is dropped.
We followed all the protocols, masked as asked. I got Covid in February and isolated, my wife got it a few days later. We also have a 3 year old daughter, and after my wife tested positive for Covid, we got her tested for knowledge more than anything else, as she had absolutely no symptoms. She tested positive as well.

I was pretty sick for about 4 days with Covid, then it let up, but the congestion persisted. 3 days later, I felt pretty sick again, but had my taste and smell back. I was able to get a Virtual Dr.'s Appt as soon as that happened, they prescribed an antibiotic and cough medicine. I was literally completely better in two days. My wife had the same story. We would have never known my daughter had Covid.

I am military and a month later, they called me to get the Moderna vaccine. The reaction to the first shot was more severe for a 24 hour period than actual Covid. I had the exact same reaction from the second vaccine shot. My wife got the Pfizer Vaccine and had no reaction. I am happy we are fully vaccinated both naturally and boosted I suppose through the vaccine.

At some point when the vaccines are available to all who want them, we really must let people exercise their own personal freedom and choice and not stigmatize people for being wary of a vaccine that has not received full FDA Approval. I am happy that I am vaccinated. I feel completely comfortable not wearing a mask. I also do not begrudge anyone who has a differing viewpoint.

We go to Disney over Memorial Day, and I cannot wait to be able to have a nice adult beverage in hand, not worrying about stopping, distancing and pulling my mask down to take a drink. That is the one part of this whole deal that completely ruined the experience for me, the joy of just walking and eating and drinking in a theme park. It was so alien not to be able to do that. And the fireworks, please bring those back ASAP!

You don't know.

If *you* are vaccinated, you don't have to wear a mask (with the exception of limited areas, such as public transportation).
If *you* are not vaccinated, you should wear a mask. That's it. That's all there is.

What if you are around maskless people, all of which are "cheating" and aren't immunized?

Simple. If *you* are vaccinated, you don't have to wear a mask (with the exception of limited areas, such as public transportation).
If *you* are not vaccinated, you should wear a mask.

-----

The "hidden" point being, is that it's a probabilities game, and it has always been a probabilities game. The CDC had previously determined that it was "safe enough" (*not* 100% safe) for you to go out with a mask.
Now they are determining that if you are vaccinated, it is "safe enough" (*not* 100% safe) to go out without a mask (except on public transportation, etc.).

It was *never* 100% safe to go out or interact with most people during the pandemic, even with masks. It was just *safe enough* (probability-wise). And now, it is *safe enough* to go maskless (in most situations) if you are vaccinated, according to the CDC. Period.

I hope those come back and stay. Our next Disney trip will be just the wife and I. No kids + Wife hating fast/dark/scary rides = I will ride alone a lot.
There are only 4 rides that have it (or had it), but most of them are the faster/scarier rides, so it might help some.

I have rarely used them before since we have kids and have never gone without them but I assumed most of the rides had a single rider option. The only one I ever took advantage of before was RnR because my daughter was the only one that wanted to ride when I did and she did not care about riding with someone else.

RnR, Everest, Test Track, and Millenium Falcon are the only rides that have it.

You don't scare me - I'm vaccinated!
