Yes and we need to add:

Those flashing yellow lights on the post with the sign "school zone".........mean you are approaching a school and inside those designated areas you are required to drive the posted speed limit (here it's 15 mph). Every morning as I come in to work I am amazed at the number of cars the two crossing guards have to whistle at and instruct to slow down.

I'll add that this includes buses that are stopping to pick up handicapped children. Just because you see a parent pushing a child in a wheelchair to the bus doesn't mean that you don't have to stop.

It's times like this that built-in cameras on cell-phones are a God-send . *Especially* when the business-name and probably the phone number are on the vehicle...makes it ever so much easier to contact the business-owner/taxi-cab commission to tell them your concerns.

A lot...this is a real problem where we live! My kids have almost been hit twice by cars who are not blatently disobeying the bus stop lights, but just aren't paying attention. The one time the person felt so bad they were shaken up but did stop and the bus driver reported the license plate to the police. The person did end up getting a ticket.
People need to give themselves more time and not be in such a rush all the time...

It's just like a yellow light on a traffic signal. "Be prepared to stop".

The way to remember it is that if the stop sign is out on the side of the bus, your car can not pass it. If the bus is at a 4way intersection, you can proceed as long as you do not pass the stop sign. This applies to IL law so other states may be different.

There were 15-20 cars that blew past the bus. I'm not exaggerating. It's a big city street. It's also hard to ignore that many cars when there were so many young children trying to get on the bus. As for my memory, it's like a steel trap. But it didn't take much to recall the scene as it happened at about 8:30 CT this morning. Thanks for your interest, though!

Gosh. I guess when you think your child (or even someone elses child) might be in danger you tend to recognize it as kind of a big deal.

I'd like to add that the same thing goes for the school crossing guard. I did this thankless job for 14 years and can't tell you the number of times I had to grab kids out of the way of cars. These were normally other parents who didn't want to wait for me and the kids to get out of the way. There was also a 4-way traffic stop. I was hit by a car several times, although fortunately I was only bruised each time. I never could figure out what was so important that they couldn't wait a few extra seconds.

I have been amazed at the number of people who just look at the crossing guard like "why is this person in a uniform and bright orange vest blowing a whistle and pointing at me?" while they continue on well above the posted speed limit. There is at least one car everyone morning. It has been so bad that on several occasions there is a police officer there with a radar gun.

And another one to add...Those men and women with the "STOP" sign on a stick that walk out into the middle of the street IN THE SCHOOL ZONE-TWO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND A MIDDLE SCHOOL? They want you to stop, not just one way, but all ways. That's why it's a two sided stop sign. Since you are already well within the school zone, you shouldn't be driving fast enough to not see him.

Seriously, I witnessed this last year. A woman coming through the school zone blasted right past the crossing guard who was in the street directing cars in and out of the school area. (Thank God there weren't any children around.) The oncoming traffic had stopped, the guard was facing them. He had a two sided stop sign. She drove right past him, well over the 25 mph limit. I was so mad that when I saw her in the parking lot of the store I was going to, I rolled my window down and told her she almost ran that crossing guard over. She said, "I didn't know that I had to stop going in that direction!" Then after explaining to her that yes she did have to stop (OK, it was heated), she got out her cell phone and said I was crazy and she was calling the cops. (I am in my car nowhere near her.) I said, great then I can tell him what you just did and we can all go talk to the crossing guard. She shut up after that.

We were allowed to take license plates nos. down because it was so bad and I had people come up and threaten me. All they were ever given was a warning to slow down and stop at the sign. I had to retire because my left knee was banged so many times I was in chronic pain. I loved the job and especially the kids but it is really a tough job.
OT I notice we will be in WDW at the same time. What are your dates and where are you staying?
