We're watching one of the first Harry Potter films right now and the kids are all wearing ugly gold and maroon wool scarves. Suddenly I think I'd like one. LOL. I wonder if they'll be selling them at the Universal gift shops come December.

I'll bet you're right. I usually like to think of myself as immune to that sort of commercialism. (I didn't even buy mickey ears during my last trip to Disney.) But suddenly, I think I'm going to be a sucker when I get to the gift shop.

They don't just sell red and gold but scarfs for all the houses! :goodvibes

The ones they sell in the Universal stores have the narrow gold stripes from the later films. As far as I know, if you want the scarves with the equal-sized red and gold stripes (from the first film), you'll have to either knit them yourself, or find someone to knit them for you.

Here's two pics I found by Googling...

Universal:

I think this next scarf is only available at Universal...

And finally, a shot of my front entrance way with the scarves I knitted (my Ravenclaw wore her scarf to school)...

We were just there yesterday and bought 2 scarves at Dervish and Banges, one Gryffindore and one Slytherin. The shopkeeper told us the ones we were buying were the "official" Hogwarts scarves (the first picture that Magpie posted) and they don't have anything written on them or anything, and the other ones are the Muggle version (the second pic that Magpie posted). We like the official versions better. :goodvibes

Thanks for the pictures. What a great mom you are to make those scarves. Were they a hit at school? They're great! I think the narrow stripes might be more dignified for a 50 year old business woman to wear to work. Though the other might be a conversation starter in more casual situations.

As the previous poster said, all the scarves sold now days are the newer design from Prisoner of Azkaban and forward, with the narrow stripes of gold. The older styles are much harder to find for retail. Alivan's still carries them, however they are missing the Gryffindor logo.

Alivan's carries quality products, they were the go to place for wands/brooms ect for fans for many years. I haven't personally purchased a scarf from them though, but their other products have not been disappointing. In the parks, all you'll find will be the newer design.

Those are soo cool, Magpie! :cool1: Where did you get the crests to sew on?

Ooo, I just realized my Alma Mater and Harry's have the same colours...at Mount Allison we called it "Garnet and Gold".

Thanks! My daughter has been wearing her's non-stop and says she'd had many compliments on it (she's my Ravenclaw - I chose the colours blue and bronze for her, because those are the "book" colours).

And my husband's scarf is Griffindor - he wore his yesterday morning. :lovestruc

I think winter "business wear" is a little more casual in our town, since it gets so darned cold. I frequently see men and women in business suits, parkas and big winter boots - plus hockey touques!

I got them from Alivans!

They're a little ways down the page. I like the older embroidered patches better than the new "movie" ones.

I am also knitting our own scarfes before we leave for Harry land. I bought those same patches on ebay for 3 bucks each. I am also knitting the skinny stripes of gold seen in the later movies. It is a lot of work, but it will be worth it! Knitting a gryfindor for hubby and ravenclaw for me. will post a pic when I am done :goodvibes

My son got a Slytherin scarf to go with his Snape wand last week. I wore it on Saturday as it was freezing in the parks. I heard you can also find them on line. Enjoy HP. It was fantastic.

Just to add some recent details to the older info . . . . .

We were at WWoHP just about two weeks ago. My wife bought a scarf, and she found a different style available at Filch's than was available at D&B. I didn't look at them carefully, but she thought that the ones at Filch's were nicer, And were less expensive. (She bought Ravenclaw there, since she's the brainy type, even though as USC fans, cardinal and gold would have fit our needs more directly.)

So at a minimum, it appears we can at least say that there ARE different styles available.

Yes, from our December trip, it seems that there are two sorts of scarves. The less expensive kind are the ones with the bigger stripes and the crests. They are also shorter and thinner, per the TM (who held them up to compare, and yep they are shorter). The more expensive ones are the ones first shown in the pix, no crests, and they are a lovely 34.95 each. So when you're there in mid-December, more specifically Dec 13 2010 and it's approx 35 degrees while you're riding Hippogriff 14 times in a row (literally) and you're FREEZING, and you buy them for your family along with 3 house tie lanyards...you'll be spending well over $100 in one shot. :headache: (and let's not talk about the 3 butterbeer mugs you bought, too)

Compared to our relatively low souvenir-spending at Disney, Universal knows what they are doing!

But seriously, we LOVE those scarves. Especially mine, since I got Ravenclaw, which doesn't scream Harry Potter-theme to the muggles one runs into in everyday life. :)

Not sure if we will bring them on our trip since it will be the middle of July!!

I've knit 5 HP scarves - the best pattern I've found, that makes the stripes more clean looking, is k1p1. I like the even, wider stripes myself, but the kids like the narrow stripes.

I'd never pay $35 for a scarf! I'm a rabid knitter, so no one in my house gets any store-bought scarves or hats, LOL!

I wish I knew how to knit. I had to crochet mine and I don't think it looks as nice.

I don't knit, but didn't think I'd pay that for a typical scarf, either.

Until we hit day 14 of our trip, it had been very cold for most of our stay, we were there in WWoHP that morning with the temperature at approx 35 degrees, and we'd had enough.

Money well spent, at that point.

I've seen probably an average of 25 of those scarves every hour at the parks, and I just don't mean Universal,I've seen hundreds and hundreds of them at Disney and Sea World in my last couple of trips. The most popular is obviously the red and gold one,but I've seen many of the other ones.
