We were watching the PGA this afternoon when a commercial came on for a 55+ housing community called "The Villages". Really nice looking homes on two golf courses and about an hour from WDW. Has anyone checked these out already? My husband liked the part about being on a golf course and I liked the part about being close to Disney!

We've still got about 10 more years before retirement but it never hurts to dream!

We're not too far behind you, and I'm already trying to sell my husband on the move. :cool1:
I hope somebody has checked into this already and decides to share what they think.

I want to retire in S Fla and live on a sailboat. Biscayne Bay or the Keys. Near WDW is a second choice.

I would like to retire in the Orlando area. I sure don't want to retire in the "great white north". More and more I can't stand winter.

DH and I have talked about venturing out on upcoming trips and checking out the area communities. With all of us "Boomers" gearing for retirement I would imagine there are alot of nice areas in Florida. Most of our friends here in Washington are looking at Arizona and Palm Desert but we don't like the dry climate. :sunny:

I specifically told DH I don't want to retire right near WDW. Then I probably wouldn't stay at OKW and BCV as often. Now Alabama-that seems like just the right amount of driving distance. Once you get to WDW, you might as well stay awhile.

DH and I have been looking into relocating to FL for our retirement, but what is holding US back is our health insurance. They way it is written, we can only use IN STATE Drs and hospitals. Kind of a long ride from Fl to MI for a physical and checkup. What got us to notice it was a few months ago when we were down there, we needed to us an ER, We were told that they did NOT take our insurance.

I have about 4 1/2 years before retirement and have looked at alot of areas around Disney. The Villages is a beautiful place and will send you a dvd and material on home costs etc.But not for me.I don't see myself in a community.I see myself on a lake somewhere or intracoastal waterway.I may even consider working at Disney when I retire. My wife and I usually rent a home for 3 weeks in the summer and have talked to alot of retired couples down here and its pretty split on whether they made a good move or not.I know I can't wait, but my wife will miss the snow and the season changes.

In a heart beat I would be close to Disney. My dw wants to be close to family so I hope the kids live in FL. :cool1:

My family and I are in the process of preparing ourselves for a move to Florida in the near future. I am looking into early retirement because of health issues, and my type of employment, is making it nearly impossible to stay in this climate during the winter months. My mother retired and moved to Lake County Florida last year, which is about a 60 minute drive north of WDW, so we are looking to move in that area, once I make (or my knees make) the final decision to head south. The one area that I struggle with about making this move is with my DD 14, and having to uproot her from her friends. Even though she said she would not mind moving to Florida, I remember as a child how many times we moved, and what it was like starting over after each move, trying to make new friends. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Friends of ours moved to the Villages about 2 years ago and LOVE it. Here it is below.....

We had information about the Villages a while back. I'm afraid it looked to us just like Stepford...and we all know what happened there!

Thanks Iluv_totravel for the link and glad to hear your friends are enjoying it.

gillD - Stepford Wives? I'm not sure which would be scarier that or a Desperate Housewives cul-de-sac!

DW and I have talked about it. I think we would prefer to own a home in FL to stay in over the winter mos. I had a aunt and uncle who did this. They moved down there and stayed in Ft. Lauderdale until May. Then they came back to NC and stayed until Sept. That beat the heat for them.

I have around 25 years to go but its nice to dream anyway.

I have a wonderful idea. Stay at OKW from April til Sept, then relocate to VWL from Oct til Mar. Now that would be the life!

we have talked about it on and off for many years... we keep hoping that DH's company moves us to Ft Lauderdale to work at their plant there..

When we were at WDW last year, I asked Dh if he wanted to just start looking at places. but he isn't ready and the kids are still to young.. We thought about Lakeland Fl . I want to work at WDW in the gift shop at MK outside of the hall of presidents.. and DH wants to sit home and take all of the loose legos, find the instructions and put all the lego pieces back together so we have complete sets for the grandkids..

We have over 30 years before we have to decide. I'm afraid there won't be any place left for us by that time!!! ;)
