Has anyone used this cash card as opposed to the Fairfx card?
I know Fairfax is a better rate, but if you lose/have the card stolen you lose the money on it, whereas the TC Passport covers the sum.

TIA

I got the tesco version, nice to be able to to put money on it instore 7 days a week.

Used it last year in Malta, no problems at all. We were even given some Euros in cash for opting to get the card! We've gone with the Post Office version this year, better exchange rate at the time.

We've used the Travelex Cash Passport, which is much the same thing. The only drawback with it, I only discovered when we returned. We had over $100 left on the card which we planned to just save for a future trip and add to ready for October. Well, imagine my surprise when I logged into my account and realised I's been charged a $3.50 fee every single month since April. My own fault for not reading the small print properly but, there is an inactivity fee which is charged every month if you haven't used the card for 12 months. My advice would be, if you are considering this card, make sure if there is money left on it, you use it at least once within the 12 months to keep the card active :)

:mad:I can't believe this........

I've just logged on to my cash passport account for the first time, I bought it in 2007, and I've been charged $3.50 every month since. Nowhere does it say about the charges if you don't use it. I told them when we bought them we weren't going till 2010. I'm marching down to Thomas Cook tonight to ask why I wasn't told etc etc .......

Did anyone else know about this charge before you use it?

It was printed in the little brochure/flyer that I picked up instore at TC a couple of years ago - maybe a little more. It was one of the reasons I decided not to bother with it.

Obi, is there any reason you are looking at the TC cash card as opposed to the FairFX, knowing that the rate is slightly better on the FairFX? Pure curiosity, but I love learning something new ;)

We had a faifax card last trip but it didn't work everywhere which was annoying. Has anyone else had this problem?

I don't really want to hear that! :headache: Was it mainly off site places that it didn't work? I may just draw cash out of one of the machines and keep it in the safe in the room then. If you draw decent amounts at a time it won't cost too much in ATM fees. I am taking TCs too as well as my credit cards (purely for back up - never actually used them there).

i am planning on using the card this year, i wont be putting money on it iuntill iuts time to go, and i very much doupt there will be anything left at the end of our holiday to worry about lol.

This surprises me as I had one last trip and it was fine everywhere I went - walmart, winn Dixie, everywhere onsite, airport. I know it charges a few dollars but you can get cash from any ATM too.

Just a thought, but you can use it online too. If you use planning guides like the UG, you could always just buy a subscription every year for around $10 to keep your card active - at least you get something for it. ;)

Worked everywhere we've tried to use it for the last 3 years we put most of our holiday cash on it. We've used it in big department stores to small shops in Dominican Republic and never had a problem.

Funny thing, although I have not yet used mine (aside from online ;)) I just remembered reading a few reports where occasionally people had an initial problem using the card, but if they tried it again (at the same place) it worked. Not sure what the exact details were but thought I would mention it. :goodvibes

Please dont anyone use travelex I have a dispute ongoing with them, I have got the banking ombudsman looking at this , long story short someone not me emptied my card without my knowledge and then made 13, yes 13 more attempts over 3 months to obtain money from this card, not once after it was empty did travelex contact me to say the card had no funds left on it, after many calls and emails they still have not given me a reason for not contacting me.:mad::mad:

I wish these online preloaded cards would actually generate an automated email every time there is a transaction. I know they don't have paper statements and understand that this is part of the cost cutting/no frills which allows them to offer slightly better rates, but honestly, even the most cautious person is unlikely to check a dormant account on a regular enough basis to spot a problem. I do hope you get it sorted. This kind of dispute can drag on for a long time. Where most people "go wrong" is they get tired of fighting and just abandon their claim against the company. Stick with it. It sounds like you have reasonable grounds for dispute. :goodvibes

I put the money on in august, we went to disney at xmas, early december I went to add more money to card and was told balance was zero, I checked my account and was told about the 13 attempts to obtain more money, NOT by travelex, but the bank in tesco, when I contacted travelex the first response was well its been 60 days so we cant do anything about it, they have to this day never told me why after 13 failed attemps sometimes 2 on the same day they never contacted me. I'm like a dog with a bone I wont let this go its a matter of principal now, I informed travelex I would go on every forum on the net where I saw any questions about pre paid cards and let everyone know what a comletely useless company this is.
