About W.I.S.H

Within the DISboards, there is a group of DISers that like to talk about getting healthy or staying healthy, and all of the things that entails. They are called W.I.S.Hers. On this thread, TXBelle (Heather) shares the history of W.I.S.H. and how it all began.

You are always welcome to post on the W.I.S.H boards and ask questions, or to offer advice for someone else. Once you've posted, you are automatically a member of W.I.S.H!

Within W.I.S.H there are smaller teams of about 20 people each. You do not have to be on a team to be a member of W.I.S.H and you do not have to be a member of W.I.S.H to be on a team. They are just a way for smaller groups of people to get to know each other and to offer more personalized advice and suggestions.

How can I join a team?

Simply find the team you are intersted in (this post is a good starting place) and start posting. Introduce yourself and join right in.

About the Rebels

On February 7, 2009, windwalker asked for a volunteer to lead a new team he named Rebel Alliance. It didn't appear that there were many people eager to take on that job! Soon however, Suzann and scoolover (Scott) stepped up and offered to share the duties of heading up the new team. Back then, every team member had to announce their monthly miles and minutes and the team captain kept a team total.

Before long the team had 11 members and by June we were up to 14. One of the latest monthly threads was started in July of 2009 by Suzann until K80K (Katie) started one in September of that same year. October was skipped and a November thread was started by wdwprincess (Jane). By this time, most members of the team had drifted away. "Real life" got in the way, training slowed down, there was an injury... For whatever reason, it appeared that the Rebels had disbanded.

In January of 2010, deekaypee (Debra) started asking for opinions for the new year and scoolover (Scott) offered to re-start the Rebels. He started a thread asking if any past team members were interested in coming back, and a few did. Then jmasgat (Maura) started filling the team in with brand new people who were either new to W.I.S.H or were ready to join a team. The numbers rose quickly and before long the team had 20 members.

For personal reasons, scoolover (Scott) asked disney_mommy (Andrea) to take over as team captain in February 2010. She accepted and the team is in its current state.

I apologize for my tardiness, Rebels. I am on the ball now and will make sure everything is updated.

What's everyone up to?

Well, even after my dive off the wagon after the Princess Half-that-wasn't, I still managed to move a bit last month. My son has decided he wants to be in races, too, so I signed him up for a couple of 5ks. And since I was driving him, I figured I'd just go ahead and join him. I enjoyed them. I think I'll stick to the shorter races for now, instead of doing the half marathons like I was. At first, it was hard, it felt like I was going backwards (aren't you supposed to start with 5ks and move up to half marathons?). But my friend told me that it seems like it is a nothing amount compared to a half, but I shouldn't forget that 3 miles is a lot. And she's right. Lots of people can't manage 3 miles, and it wasn't exactly a walk in the park, so I shouldn't poo-poo it. I wanted my first race to be the Princess (2010), and it was, so now I'm going to focus on smaller races and get my speed up before I do another half. And I'm okay with that.

Okay, that's my lesson for the day... ;) Anyone else learn something new about themselves last month?

It seems like everyone around me has decided to take up running and seems to be faster and go longer than me. Instead of being excited for them, I've been very discouraged for myself. Trying to figure out why I've been doing this for so long and it doesn't seem to be getting any easier. Then I found two quotes

"What is mostly ignored in running is the concept of practice. Imagine if you take up golf and were told to get buckets of balls and each week hit more balls harder in hope that the result would be effortless and precise rounds of golf."
From this I learned that I need to stop pushing to go faster and farther and just enjoy the running, it's never going to feel any easier if I keep trying to increase speed and distance. I slowed down (which I didn't even think I could go any slower) and just ran and enjoyed it

The other quote was,
"The challenge in running is not to aim at doing the things no one else has done, but to keep doing things anyone could do—but most never will."

Just keep on keeping on.

That's what I've learned.

Hi Wonderful Rebels.

I am back ( did you miss me?) Anyway, I had a hard year last year and pretty much fell of the face of the earth. But I am back and happy to be a part of a team like this.

I have been doing well since the start of the year, actually losing about 25 pounds up to this point. I am pretty excited about that! I am almost half way back to my all time low. I have noticed it is so much easier to get up and go now that I am smaller.

However, I started pushing a little too hard and I pulled my hamstring last week. I didn't tear it, so I just need to take it easy for a while and I will be OK, but it is hard to take the time off.

I am signed up for the Disneyland Half this year again, and looking forward to it.

I did the Surf City Half back in February and only missed my PR by 2 minutes. I think I will do better at DL.

anyway - hopefully I will be back to posting more often.

Keep it up!
Manda

Me again (uhoh, 2 posts in a row)

I haven't been able to do much with my sore hamstring. I did some time on the eliptical on Monday and Wednesday. I will take today off again because I have a class to go to, and it will probably be good for me anyway.

I have a marathon relay coming up in about a month and I would really like to feel good by then. I was just getting to where I could run for an entire mile at a decent speed and I would hate to lose all that and have to start over.

Excellent lesson. Sometimes when I'm talking with my friends and they're discussing running and times, I feel silly because I'm just a walker, but I have to remember that my body prefers walking to running. I need to stop comparing myself to other people.

Manda, glad you are back! I'm sorry you had such a tough year and I hope this year is much better. Congratulations on losing the weight, that is a great number. I hope to lose at least that much (plus lots more) this year, and I know it's not easy. Take it easy on that hamstring and you'll be back at it stronger than ever soon enough.

Well, I have been taking it easy. I did some elliptical this weekend and then did my first running in a long time on Tuesday. It went well, I was glad I hadn't lost all my ability to run (I am just getting into it from walking). So that was encouraging. I did a lot of stretching to do my best not to aggrevate the hamstring. So far so good. Life got busy and I haven't had time to put miles in, but I have a plan for tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully I can stick to it.

Andrea I'm glad you are doing better now than you were at Princess. Hope to see you at a race this year or next.

Manda Congratulations on losing 25 lbs.

cwnhokie I hope you are enjoying your running.

Gretchen How's your son doing.

AFM I have the Derby Festival Mini Marathon the week after easter. I am enjoying the taper.

Hi Rebels! I have missed you guys!!!

Well, since having Salmonella in late 2009, and then having complications from that... I'm BACK! I still have a nagging hip issue (Iliopsoas muscle) but I'm working through it with the help of PT (now that we have found the problem child!) Feels great to get back to racing... and I have a race coming up next weekend... Bloomsday! Its a 12k, which the length scares me for my first race back, but I'm telling myself its ok to walk :goodvibes

Oh, and I don't live in Seattle anymore... I live in Yellowstone National Park :cool1:

Hope the team is doing great!!!

Hi rebels, sorry for not having been around recently, but it looks like I've not been the only one.
Suzann Welcome back, we are usually more talkative then this.

I ran the Kentucky derby festival mini marathon in 1:54 at the end of April. DS is home from college, so I've been running with him getting ready for a 10k 4th of July weekend. Also planning on doing W&D this year with DW again. Is anyone else planning on participating in W&D.

Hi
Do we have a new June thread? All I could find was the April one, but since I haven't been here since April that is OK.

I took part in a marathon relay 2 weekends ago. It was a blast! I did my 5.5 miles in less than an hour - which is great for me! I am ready to start training for the DL half now.

It snowed here on Monday, but is supposed to be 80 degrees on Saturday. Crazy Utah weather.

Manda

Hellooooooooo Rebels.
Hi Suzann.
Congratulation Mike on running the Kentucky. I bet it is nice to be running with your son now. Good luck on the 4th. Don't think I'll be doing the Wine and Dine; daughter wants to do the Tinkerbell race. We are just in the talking stages right now so we shall see.
As for my son, he got married this May. We are all so happy for him. It looks like our family reunion in Florida this August will truly be a special occasion. We would like to do an Illuminations Dessert Party for him and his new wife; so that is what has been keeping me busy this past month.
As far as walking goes...I had trouble with my sciatic nerve which held me back for several weeks...ugggg But, it looks as though that has cleared up and I'm back on the road again. Still try to maintain myself so that once a race training begins again, I will be ahead of the game. Still enjoying Zumba on those cross training days. Our pool will be open soon so I'll be able to include that to my daily activities.
Well, that's all for now.
Hope to hear from all those other Rebels out there!!!

Hi Rebels,
HI Gretchen sounds like a fun Disney trip in august. Running with the boy is fun. We opened our pool memorial day, but I mainly just float in it, it doesn't count as exercise. I registered for W&D today, and DW is leaning towards Princess vs Tinkerbell, so it may be a while before we end up at the same race
MandaHow is the DL half training going? I think we can stretch this thread out for annother month. We have April, May and June posts all on the same page.
Suzanne how is the psoas rehab going. What do you do to rehab a psoas? Running in Yellowstone must be fun this time of year. Have you got into trail running?

TTFN

Mike

Gretchen, glad you are back at it. Being hurt is no fun. I have heard good things about Zumba, but I have never done it. I don't belong to a gym and I am kind of afraid of group classes :confused3 I guess I would rather look silly all by myself and not in front of other people.

Mike: Sounds like you are all busy with races. Someday I will get to go to a race at Disneyworld. So far the budget has kept me in the west. I am headed out to Orlando for a conference in October, but it is at the end so I can't use it as a double trip for a race. Kind of bummed about that.

Training for DL has been going well. We did a 8 mile day a few weeks ago, but were back to 5 this saturday. This will be my first "running" race. I have walked my other races. I started with all walking, then added intervals, but still walked at least 75% of the race. Right now I am training with the intent of running at least 90% of the race. Sounds crazy to me :scared1: I was joking with my hubby that I have changed from a wogger (walk/jogger) to a slogger (slow jogger). I dont' know which is better. I was pretty excited taht we were able to tie 5 sub 12 min miles together on Saturday. Every little accomplishment counts.

I like our little thread, keeps all the information in one place.

Manda Great job going from walking to mostly running. I wouldn't call 12 min miles slow, you should be proud of yourself. DL half is DWs birthday. We didn't make it out this year, but maybe someday.

Mike - Floating in the pool sounds good to me since it has gotten cooler here and my swimming has come to somewhat of a halt. Disney has so many races it does seem hard to meet fellow Rebels at them.
Manda - Wow. Congratulations on your accomplishments. I don't think I'll ever be able to run so I'm just sticking to the walking. I do Zumba with my daughter and 8 other friends so we pretty much make up the class so no one really worries about looking too bad (thank goodness). I really do like it a lot since it incorporates dancing which is my "thing".
Anyway, AFM, still plugging along and keeping a status quo for now. Daughter is pushing for me to do the Tinkerbell race and our first ever trip to Disneyland. Will concentrate on that after our August celebration........really can't wait to see my son and his wife.
TTFN

Gretchen Hope you are having fun planning your trip. How is the sciatic nerve?

Manda We did a 10k today for the 4th. It reminded me that you should try a 10k before that Disneyland half. With your new speed you should get a better corral.

Ran the bluegrass 10k today. I ran with my son and ran a 53:41. DW ran by herself with a 1:01. PRs for everybody. Race was fun. They have an authentic KY long rifle instead of a starters pistol.

Mike

Hey friends. Your absentee "team leader" here. Popping in to apologize and swear once again that I am back on track and will be keeping up-to-date with our team threads. :)

Also, we have a new teammate (a Star Wars fan!) named miralys (Jackie). I will send her this way and know she will be a friendly new member and know we will be a welcoming and friendly team for her.

Hi everybody! Just popping in to say hello. Let's see. Pertinent information. I live in Sanford, FL, about an hour away from the Mouse. I've been running since 2009, and done a few 5ks. My first 5k was actually the Twilight Zone run at DHS. I enjoy running and put in mileage weekly, but it's been sort of erratic, just running because I like it with no real goal. I need to drop a few pounds for my next costume and want to get my act together with my running and maybe enter some races.

Then I came across the WISH threads, and thought Team Rebel Alliance sounds like just my thing. (Big time fan, Rebel Legion member, so it seemed appropriate) :goodvibes

I've been toying with the idea of doing Wine & Dine Half this year (the pictures look amazing and Disney always puts on a good race), but I think I have procrastinated too long. I'm not sure I can go from five miles per run to 13.1 in such a short time. I will likely just do the 5K at AK instead, with a goal of working in a few 10K races by the end of the year and doing the Princess Half in 2012. And that's me in a nutshell. :yoda:

Just edited to add that I registered for the Princess Half about ten minutes ago, so I guess that settles things. I'll do the 5K at Wine & Dine. Off to go locate my Galloway training plan and try to figure out a training schedule. That's never been my strong suit. Usually I just wing my training and go by how I feel.
