This TERRIFIES me! Do they blink?!

"Blinking Mickey" appeared at Chef Mickey's? That's the first report I've read of that. To my knowledge he's only appeared in staged appearances and in extremely isolated cases.

:wave2: nope NOT at Chef Mickey but I LOVE that the child believes pixiedust: (so do I )

I think the problem is that they DIDN'T add "just one more degree of believablity", they took it away with sloppy mechanics. I think the problem is that the eyelash doesn't move with the eyelid. If it did, that would give visual clues of the blink. But when they eyelash is just under the brow, that indicates that the eye is open, but it is blank. This makes it look like the eye is missing or gouged out or something.

I was only vaguely unsettled by it until you pointed this out. Now I'm totally grossed out.

I still don't entirely understand what the "uncanny valley" thing. I can see how the blinking sends it into the valley, but i guess i don't understand the concept fully. :(

Too expand on it further:

Basically we look at something like Mickey Mouse and we like him for his human-like qualities. He's a cute character and he walks on 2 legs and he wears clothes, etc. The more human-like he is, the better we like him. UNTIL, he hits a certain point (which is obviously the blinking for the OP) at which we begin to be repulsed by him because he starts to look like an "imperfect human". Instead of focusing on the things that make him look cute and human-like, we start to focus on the things that make him look odd and inhuman.

Oh! Ok I get it! . Thanks for the explanations!!

My 6 yr old is convinced Mickey is real because he blinks! No one can presuade him otherwise, it is pretty cute. I can see how it is creepy though too, but for a 6 year old boy it makes him real :)

I dunno. Everyone has different fears. I know a lot of people are afraid of clowns. I think they are cute. :clown:

But, a BLINKING clown...

Now THAT is SCARY!

Honestly, in person, I love the "blinking" Mickey heads. The characters have so many expressions now! I love when Mickey and Minnie lean in for a kiss with their eyes shut, or when Goofy looks all embarrassed. Between moving their eyes and their mouths, the suspension of disbelief is amazing with the new heads. Will they be coming to a meet and greet near you? That's yet to be seen; but for the shows? I love them.
