This surpirsed me.

We didn't have 2 minutes silence in our school either! The bell rang 2 minutes early but it wasn't 2 minute silence because people were leaving to there next lesson:(

I'm from Canada. But 9/11 affected me and my classmates as much as it did anyone else.
Normally every school year since, on sept 11 there was a moment of silence, flags at half mast, and acknowledgment on the announcements.
But this year....NOTHING!!!

I was shocked.
Nothing at all. No acknowledgement, no moment of silence, the flag wasn't even at half mast.
I found it very odd that on the fifth anniversary there was nothing!

Since we're Canadian, we make a big deal out of rememberance day, and I don't think we would ever for go a rememberance day assembly, so I find it odd that something that has directly affected our generation wouldn't be recongnized.
(don't get me wrong, I am in NO way shape or form saying rememberance day isn't as important as 9/11. But they are both a day for remembering lives lost.)

I just was shocked that no one even mentioned it at all. :confused3

You don't have remembrance day assemblies? That's like the most important assembly of the year over here.
We took the moment of silence, it was my teacher's decision, not the admins. I'm sure other classes took the moment of silence, but I doubt it at the same time.
Our city had a few silence's at City Hall and at the fire stations, but other than that, I'm not sure. But I do remember 9/11. I remember hearing what had happened, I remember hearing that the agrena had thousands of people in it, looking for somewhere to stay. There were 18 airplanes that landed in my city that day.

Oh no no no, we DO have rememberance day assemblies. What I meant to say was that I don't think that we would ever NOT have a rememberance day assembly--so I thought it was odd that we wouldn't recognize 9/11 the way we would rememberance day.

i didn't have ANY moment of silence, ANY lesson dedicated to it or ANY teacher mention ANYTHING about 9/11, i thought it was so disrespectful! I mean we have a silence for Remembrance Day and that happened like 60 years ago or whatever.

We didn't have one either. We had an entire discussion in my journalism class about it. You see both sides, or at least I do. Some say that it's the least we can do and we need to remember it, as if we forgot, pssh. The other side said that would the people who died want it? Shouldn't we be being educated so we can eventually make improvements to keep anything similar from ever happening again? Why should we need to have a moment of silence to remember it, we're not totally oblivious to the world around us? Shouldn't we go on with our lives? I didn't really have strong feelings either way. Yup, I would have been silent and remember it but I didn't really care that we didn't. I could find counterobjections to everything said but it eventually takes you in one big circle so I'm not going to put them down here. I don't really know, I don't think that it is entirely necessary or unnecessary. I'm very indifferent about it.

We didn't do anything in Global and just went on with the lesson as we would have on January 26th.

Again, very indifferent.

My friend jessica broke down on me yesterday because she lived 15 minutes from the towers when it happened. About a year later she moved here. She said the city was never the same. She told me exactly what happened that day from an inside perspective. I was biting my tongue not to cry. People that did nothing for it that day should be ashamed of themselves.

Ohh okay.
However, the silence for Remembrance Day is just as or if not, more important than 9/11. We lost thousands in 9/11, however we lost more in WWI and WWII. Those wars may have been 60 years ago, but many soldiers still live today, with only one arm, or one leg. They remember the friends they lost. People remember their parents who were killed in the war. They fought to keep the world free to do what you want. To practice the religion you want.
I was just saying, it doesn't matter how long ago something happened, it still affects people.

But, yes, I do agree that 9/11 is something to be remembered. You should be ashamed if you didn't even think about it, as though yesterday was just another day.

We didn't have much of a silence yesterday, but we did have to write an essay on it in LA. Today, during mass (I go to a catholic school) for our closing song we sang "America the Beautiful". Almost everyone was crying during it because they had mentioned it was in memory of yesterday. The church was so loud that the choir turned off the mics because there was no difference.

I'm saddened by the pathetic remembrances of 9/11 on it's 5th anniversary. My uncle was standing one block away from both of the WTCs. He was one of the thousands who called 911 that day. Later in Feb. 2002, I visited DC. We passed the Pentagon and saw this huge gaping hole covered with a black tarp and I tried not to think of all the people who had been there. I later convinced my parents to get a couple of flowers to lay at the Vietnam War memorial in DC. I wrote a sign and put "For 9/11". And left them there. The next day, we stopped there and there was a pile of flowers taller than me. That is what a true memorial for the day is.

Do you know what sadder? Yesturday as I said they didnt mention a thing about it on the announcements but today they had time to announce how teen vogue went out of business.

Movies are to "violent" and inappropriate for schools. They may not have had a moment of silence because they do not want you to fall behind in the ciriculum. Trust me if you fall behind it will take you weeks to catch up.
There were plenty of shows about 9/11 on in the morning and afternoon, it's just NOT suitable for schools. SPECIALLY for elem. and middle schools.

That is sad.
But what do you mean about announcements?
I mean, 9/11 was alll over the news.
If you're talking about school announcements, why would they mention something like Teen Vogue out of business? How is that important?
[ACKKKK! IT WENT OUT OF BUSINESS!!!?]

School announcements.

I had a moment of silence, wasn't long, but it got the point across of how terrible that day was

School announcements.

That makes no sense. What does Teen Vogue have to do with school? That's not important.
Plus I can't find anything about Teen Vogue going out of business.

Ohh maybe they didnt but they said that lol. But our announcements are about everything. They play music over them to, like rock/hiphop music.

Our announcements have differed throughout the years, but generally it's been ...
'Soccer tryouts on... blahblahblah." and then 'And remember, do something nice for someone else and have a nice day'

today it was 'Happy learning'

You know when you think about it we have to get over it some time. . .Do we still have moments of silence for Pearl Harbor? Or the Kennedy assassination?

Two men were killed in association to the Kennedy assassination. Thousands died when those towers were hit.

thats apples and oranges.
