Hello,

My wife is practically forcing me to ask this question. :headache:

We are looking into a stay at AKV in the fall. When my wife visited the AK the last time we were there she noted a strong animal odor as we were walking in. She is worried that this odor will be present in our room at AKV.

Can anyone comment on any foul odors they may have noticed staying at AKV?

Thanks in advance.

I think what she really noticed was the smell of the mulch/fertilizer Disney uses. I have smelled it at several places. It probably was not really the animals.

Not sure what your wife was smelling, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't animals. If it was, it is not common.

We've stayed there several times (the latest being last month), and we've never smelled any animals...even the ones on the savannah, directly outside our room door.

I know the smell that she is talking about. The odor could not be smelled in the rooms. I could smell it some on the balcony but could not in the room.

I have been staying at/visiting AKV for the past 10 years and only twice I have smelled animals. At Jambo House, if you are standing directly in front of the flamingo enclosure, you can smell the flamingos. Only once, I smelled what may have been animals when I was standing near the reception desk at Sanaa at Kidani Village. I have never smelled animals while sitting on my balcony or inside of the room. Keepers are very quick to pick up any animal droppings.

Funny story: Many years ago, I happened to be standing on Arusha rock watching a group of Ankole cattle. One of them dropped some manure and then the heard wandered away. About 10 minutes later, a keeper drove through the savanna in a small truck, scooped up the manure and drove away. Very efficient!

I have never smelled anything. On the other hand I may be used to it with 5 horses and 45+ chickens in my yard, not to mention the cats, dogs & kids in the house :rotfl:

I've smelled the water by the flamingos and some here have mentioned that as being very offensive. It's not something that puts me off staying at AKV! I've not noticed any other smells. Maybe you should make your AKV a very short one...split the trip up, just in case.

As mentioned by others, the only place I've ever noticed anything even close to an odor was at the Flamingo rookery on a hot day. Oh, and if you take the Waynama safari, you will notice a strong musk odor coming from the dominant male giraffe. Of course, you have to be within 10 feet of him to smell it though. ;)

They get to it faster than I can clean up after my dog :rotfl:. I guess I need one of those trucks and a keeper here ;)

Have to agree--we've smelled quite a bit of fertilizer at different resorts, but never any smells from the animals at AKL/AKV.

Disney is known for piping in different odors to complement the themes of the different resorts. Maybe an Imaginer came up with a AKV scent? :goodvibes

I agree with the other posters that it might be from mulch that is being laid when new flowers are planted. We sat on our balcony every day for our five night stay in June and never once noticed an animal smell. None of the five children in our family gathering mentioned it either and all of them are city kids that always complain of that smell at the zoo or when new mulch is laid in our community.

As others said, could be the landscaping, but could also be a smell that is unique to that resort. Every resort seems to have a fragrance to their lobby and maybe whatever they use at AKV could be what bugs here. WL and AKV seem to have that same fragrance...either from the wood in the lobby's or something pumped in the HVAC system.
