I think this is outrageous.

A mom wants the school to remove oak trees from the school yard and nearby area because of her son's peanut allergy. What the...So now people want to ban nature! I would laugh it wasn't so ridiculously sad. I don't know how this child is going to function in the world.

Ever hear of this before or did this woman discover a whole new level of entitlement?

Edited title should say Nut allergies, not peanut, thanks for pointing that out.

I wouldn't call it entitlement, but definitely a way new level of protectiveness.

As said in the link, "The Star quotes medical authorities as saying they are unaware of any cases of anaphylactic allergic reaction to acorns and if it were to occur it would only be if the child were forced to eat acorns, which are very bitter."

Yes, a peanut allergy can be dangerous, even fatal, but wouldn't it be enough that the mother tells her son that acorns are meant only for Chip and Dale?

What next? Pave over the entire school yard because someone's little darling has hayfever? :confused3

Peanuts aren't tree nuts.
Does the kid have a tree nut allergy?

I didn't read the article, but the details you gave don't even make sense. Peanuts have nothing to do with trees. She'd appear more rational asking for peas to be removed from the school menu since at least they are legumes.

The article says that the children have tree nut allergies, not peanut allergies.

The article makes no mention of peanut. Its states that the child has a severe tree nut allergy.

My ds has a tree nut allergy and seasonal allergies to pretty much every kind of tree. I couldn't imagine going as far as having trees removed to protect him, that is absolutely insane.

This mother is an idiot.
I implore council to consider the mental well-being of these children and the cruel and unusual environment we would be subjecting these students
Oh give me a freaking break. This kids are doomed.

I understand her being worried about her child’s safety but I think this a little much. Maybe she should just home school him or have him moved to a treeless school. I feel really bad that this women has to deal with this type of anxiety because it is not normal and I am sure it has an effect on her child also.

I was going to ask why a child with a peanut (a ground legume) allergy needs to be away from tree nuts, but then I read the article and realized the child has a tree nut allergy, not a peanut allergy.

Here's the article for those who don't want to click through.
She's a nut job (no pun intended).

Mother Wants Oak Trees Removed at School Because of Allergy Threat
Posted By: Michelle Rosa

The mother of two kids going to St. Stephen Catholic elementary school in Vaughan has an unusual request of the city, but she swears it's all in an effort to provide a safe environment for children.

Donna Giustizia wants all the oak trees removed near the school because she believes the acorns from those trees pose a deadly threat to her two children. They have severe tree-nut allergies and while the school is nut-free, she thinks the acorns from the oak trees also pose a threat.

She told Vaughan's committee of the whole, "Many of the students unfortunately mistake the acorns for hazelnuts as they look similar. I implore council to consider the mental well-being of these children and the cruel and unusual environment we would be subjecting these students to if we do not relocate these trees, not to mention the fear that could arise should these acorns eventually be used as bullying tactics."

The Star quotes medical authorities as saying they are unaware of any cases of anaphylactic allergic reaction to acorns and if it were to occur it would only be if the child were forced to eat acorns, which are very bitter.

It's worth noting that Donna Giustizia has received awards for her work in helping Canadians diagnosed with anaphylaxis. In fact Vaughan City council gave her the Civic Hero Award in 2010.

Vaughan council requested a report to be presented at the next meeting, on Nov. 20.

Having a mother like that is far more damaging to the child's well-being than going to a school with a few oak trees near it is.

As the mother of a tree nut and tree allergic (pollen) kid, she embarrasses me and she makes it difficult for even the "reasonable" accommodations to be made without serious eye-roll from non-allergic folks.

That mom is nuts (pun intended)!

My DD has a severe tree nut allergy. There are oak trees all over the school playground and our back yard as well and I've never given it a thought. The only way she could possibly have a reaction would be to eat the acorns, and since she hasn't shown any latent squirrel-like tendencies, I don't think she'll be snacking on acorns. Maybe we'll have to homeschool to avoid the trees on the playground. But then we'd have to move because our whole back yard is bordered with oak trees.

I really feel for her kids though. I think she's doing them more harm than good.

The woman sounds crazy. Honestly, if her kids can't be trusted not to pick up random nuts from the ground and eat them, she needs to be focusing on her failure to adequately teach them that and not on trying to get the trees removed.
