This MAY be the Rebels' Best Month Yet!

Hi Rebels! I am finally checking in!

Good Luck Liam and Katie!!! Here is more PD pixiedust:

I have been in a state of burnout the last couple of days and have been tempted by the idea of not getting in Thursday’s 3 mile walk. But, I think I am going to try tonight, maybe pushing my oldest son in the new stroller we bought. I bet he would like that. Tomorrow, hopefully, I will get in my long walk of 10 miles.

Have a great weekend Rebels!

Jen: Glad you found a situation that worked with the bike. Have fun on your run tonight and have a great weekend!

Katie: Too much work! But sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. Good luck on your race!

Jane: Good luck on your run tomorrow. I am sure you can do 6! It is just one more than 5 right?

Pat: We have that same cold front coming in, only ours is going from 70 to 40 (and rain) by tomorrow. Yucky!

James: Good luck getting the walk in. You can do it! 10 miles is a long walk. I have 3 scheduled for Saturday, and will probably have to do that inside – sigh.

AFM: I was excited when I got home last night and the weather was perfect. I went out for my walk, I was so happy at the weather. If I didn’t need to come home and feed my husband I would have stayed out walking all night! But instead I did between 3 and 4 miles (not sure, my Garmin ran out of battery about 10 minutes into the walk). But it was so nice. Hopefully the sun I got yesterday will hold me over though the cold and rainy weekend.

Just checking in before the weekend begins.
GOOD LUCK LIAM AND KATIE.:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:
Hope all the rebels have a wonderful weekend.
I'm still moving along but seem to be slowing down a bit and I don't know why. Could it be that the weather is getting warmer and more humid? Or, am I just hitting a bump in the road here? I wish I could bump up my speed a bit. Any suggestions?
Maybe I need another Disney race to get me going. ;) That's what I keep telling DH anyway. I'm still working on that.
Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Thanks for the best wishes and pixie dust everyone, especially Andrea, Nikki, Jen, RENThead09, James, Gretchen. I hope I haven't missed anyone out.

Good luck with your race Katie, hope to hear all about it.

I'm off to the airport in an hour, thankfully volcanos and strikes won't be affecting me.

Annoyingly, after six months of winter it's going to be the hottest weekend of the year. Even in Edinburgh it's looking like 70 degree temps.

I'll be starting at 10am which is 5am EST so I should be finished by the time you all get up (hopefully).

I'll try and post a race report here and photos if I can get them.

Good running everyone,

Liam

Hi everybody-thought I'd better check in from time to time!
Bob and I just ran a 5K in our hometown this morning. It is sort of our usual running route but we always leave out the big hills-the race directors do not!
Official time 33:33 for me, not a PR but sure was fun!
Bob finished at 26:00 even- a new PR for him. Most races he sticks by me and never really counts how fast he could be. Today he ran his own race and had an awesome time!
Lots of fun to run with folks we know from church and school (fun to beat them too!)
Have a great weekend everyone!
Run happy!

Looks like everyone is heading into the weekend full force!!

Can't wait to hear how Liam and Katy did!

Nice Job luckymum and hubby!

AFM: I did not get a walk in yesterday, just too much rain and too many other activities. I did make up for it today! There were 5 ladies that wanted to try the Cross Fit program our friend has been doing. We warmed up with a 2 mile walk (to get my distance in) we then did a few different stations starting wiht 10 reps and working down to 1 rep!! It was great! I got Cardio and muscle workout all in 1! Can't wait for the next session of Cross-Fit!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Katie - Sounds like you had a really long and hard work week. I am glad that you were able to take a bit of time off. I am excited to hear how the race this weekend is going/went!

Jane - I laughed about your comment about drinking too much water...I feel this all the time...especially when know I am sloshing! :lmao: There have been many days where I feel like I cannot possibly drink any more.

Glad you were able to get back out and that the weather was nicer. The humidity has set in here today and it does make it so much harder. Good luck with your group run! I hope that you were able to figure out the time and mileage thing so that you felt prepared (I am just like you with this).

Pat - Hope you were able to get in a nice run before it got windy or your weather changed too much. I have been thinking about your job situation and how excited you must be at the possibility of being that close to DL!

James - I am sorry to hear about your bit of a burnout. I hope that you are getting over it and enjoying your long 10 mile walk! I totally understand though because I have had many burnout periods already this year. Thankfully mine have been short and then I just get back out there.

Manda - I hate when my Garmin battery goes dead! So sorry you had that happen. It is great that you were able to enjoy the beautiful weather and get out for a wonderful walk.

Gretchen - Glad to hear you are still moving along. I am such a slow runner that I am not sure that I should give any advice on speed! :rotfl: However, that being said, here is what I have done....one day a week, I try to do some different things with speed. Sometimes I try to increase my pace just a bit and do it for a long time. Sometimes I try to run as fast as I can and go for short distances. I haven't found the perfect thing yet but my speed is improving.

Liam - I am so excited that you had your race this weekend...here is hoping your had a beautiful, perfect temperature race day! I will be excited to read your race report and hopefully see some photos!

Barb - I posted on your DailyMile site as well but...WAY TO GO! I think it is great that you are running so many 5Ks and enjoying your runs. Tell Bob that he has a great time!!! I want my DH to race his own race one day so that he can see what his time really is.

Don't you wish that the race directors could learn how to take the big hills out of the race - or at least let us stop our timer as we walk up the hills! :rotfl2:

Nikki - Your cross fit training sounds great! I really need to find a better cardio cross training options but just continue to struggle with it. Good for you to join in with your friends!

AFM - Well, life got in the way and I was not able to run on Friday. DH and I did get up right away and run this morning so I am feeling a bit better. We did 3.55 miles and it was a really nice run. I felt like we could have gone longer but tomorrow we are doing a long run (9-10 miles) so we did not want to push it.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
Jen

Good luck Liam! I need to leave for my race at 5:30, so I will be up when you get started. Have a great race!

Hi all,

Back from the Edinburgh marathon yesterday, here's my report.

Firstly, after six months of winter, Britain decides that this weekend was going to be the hottest weekend of the year. At the start it was not too hot and cloudy but after an hour the clouds burnt off and the temperature rose. There seemed to be not a breath of wind and the sun was unrelenting.

I was aiming for a sub 3:30 finish which means 8 minute mile pace. I kept this up for the beginning part of the race but by 7 miles I really began to feel it. Also I suddenly really needed a toilet stop which badly distracted me while I searched for a suitable portaloo (as we call them over here). The support from the people of Edinburgh was great but I wondered how supportive they'd be if a red-faced, sweaty runner with a pained look on his face ran up and asked to use their toilet.

By half way I was beginning to slip off the pace and from then on I was in survival mode. I've done 8 marathons now and apart from London in 2007 where I had a complete meltdown, this was by far the hardest.

The next six miles were agony as I was realising that my target was slipping away and I had so far still left to run. There are often dark times during a race and this was mine. I began to wonder whether I'd finish at all or whether I'd have a complete meltdown and have to walk as I grimly contemplated the next ten miles which I was sure were mostly uphill.

At 19 miles I put my ipod on and listened to my running playlist of upbeat, inspirational songs to try and drag me along. As I got past 21 miles I realised that my sub 3:30 target was not completely out of the question and if I really motored I might still be able to hit it. So I put my foot down and .... absolutely nothing happened, I just didn't have anything left in the tank.

I couldn't believe how hot it was (77 degrees according to the news). The crowd was great, loads of people were spraying their garden hoses into the runners which was brilliant. I saw plenty of runners that had collapsed by the side of the road.

I ran this race last year and got a pb and photos taken in the finish straight show me looking strong and comfortable but my friend took a shot of me coming into the finish this year and I look in complete agony.

I finally crossed the line at 3:33 which is a pb by 1 minute 22 seconds. I'm really happy with that after the negative thoughts that I'd had during the race but really disappointed that I didn't get my target. I was very wobbly after the finish and after I'd met up with my friends I had to do some serious lying down and eating of ice cream.

We all spend so much time in the training for these events that when things don't go well on race day there's a temptation to feel that all the training was wasted if we don't achieve everything we hoped for. Quite apart from the achievement of doing the training, the physical and mental benefits of even getting to the start line, I take my hat off to everyone of whatever speed who completes any race, particularly the marathon and we should always be proud of that.

There's always something to learn from every race you do. I've looked at my split times and I went off at 7:53 pace for the first 10k which is probably too fast and this together with the hot conditions caused me to suffer so much in the rest of the race.

Very sadly I did see that one runner died during the race which puts all my moaning into perspective. There will be plenty of other runs for me to enjoy.

Katie I'm looking forward to reading your report. I hope you had an easier time than me.

Thanks for reading. I'll post some photos when I get them

Liam

Good Morning Rebels!

Liam – Excellent race report, sorry to hear that it was a frustrating race. I think you did a great job and your finishing time is awesome.

AFM – I did get my 10 mile long walk in over the weekend. I used my 5 mile loop course Saturday with my house being the water stop. I kind of hate loops but I need the water stop. I felt pretty awful the first five miles. The cool moist air was wrecking havoc on my lungs and I just could not get enough air. Finally, the sun came up and the air thinned enough that the second half felt much better. I was able to maintain my goal pace of 14:30 the whole time, which was good. All in all, it was a perfect training walk. I was tired but not wrecked.

Unfortunately, Sunday rolled around with a runaway sinus attack which side lined me all day. Wow, this has not been a very good spring for me, what is up with that.

Have a great day Rebels!!!

Congrats to you Liam for getting through your mental psych out and achieving a personal best. You weren't too far off your goal and I'm sure you'll beat it the next time.

Jen - hope your long run was a good one and that the humidity didn't get in the way.

Nikki - sounds like the cross fit is a great program. I can't wait to hear more.

Luckymum & Bob - Great job on your 5K. I wish all hills could just be flattened for races too.

Renthead09 - I laughed a little when I saw your comment about the job. Yes it would be weird and sad if we worked for the same company. But right now I don't feel confident at all about getting the job. So I don't think this will be an issue. Are you watching the traffic patterns around your new possible job? Traffic there can be crazy so I watch the traffic patterns online to find out how far I can live and not have road rage.

Well, Saturday's group run went well. We did 5 miles instead of 6 as we had some new runners who had never run a step before that day. I can't even begin to think how sore they were after doing that 5 miles with no training. Truthfully, I could have gone the six miles easily and was sad when we turned back at the 2.5 mark. At least I know I'm progressing at a good pace and not getting injured. OH - and I lost 3 lbs. So I'm happy.

Have a great week!

Gretchen: I don’t have advice on speed, but I know there are books out there. I am still working on endurance – then I will worry about speed.

Liam: Thanks for the race report. Sorry it wasn’t what you wanted it to be. That is killer that it was that hot. Not ideal conditions. But CONGRATS on your PB! Very impressive, especially considering the conditions.

Luckymum: congrats on the race. Hurray for Bob and his PR.

Nikki: Cross-Fit sounds fun! Especially if you have fun people to do it with.

Jen: How was your long run? Hope it went well.

James: Way to go on the long miles! So impressed, and you kept your goal pace. GREAT!

Jane: It is great that you came out of the run knowing you could do more. That is a great feeling.

AFM: The weekend was nothing like I planned. Saturday got away from me. I was planning on getting out after an early morning appointment I had, but it was delayed an hour, and then there wasn’t enough time. Before I knew it I had decided to move my run to Sunday – which would have worked but I got hit with a migraine on Sunday and didn’t do anything. Oh well. I have a 3 mile run/walk scheduled for this afternoon. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks Manda and Jen for the replies. I am trying different things and will keep you updated on what eventually works for me.
Liam - glad to hear you finished the race even though it was a struggle. Everyone has those "yuck" days and it is even worse when it is a race day. So glad you fought through and did such a great job. I love your attitude of taking each experience and learning from it. Way to go!
I'm continuing (albeit slowly) to do my 3-4m each day. Working on new techniques to increase my pace this week.
Good thoughts to all Rebels and keep on moving.

Katie - How did your race go? Hope to hear that you enjoyed your run!

Liam -I loved reading your race report. I know it sounds like you struggled some but as a new runner it is so important for me to read that everyone struggles sometimes and it is not just me. I am amazed that you were able to just keep going and overcome all the troubles...and then finish with a great time! Way to go! You are totally an inspiration to me!

I especially liked your reflection about the training and being proud of what we do. I need to remember this when I attempt my first 1/2 in a couple of weeks.

James - Great job at getting your 10 mile walk in this weekend! You are doing a really nice job with your training. I think it was a good plan to make your house be a water stop. I don't know if I could do that...when I see my house, I am DONE!

I hope that you are feeling better! I hate when feeling bad gets in the way of doing what we want.

Jane - Glad to hear that your group run went well. I was really happy to read your comments about the mileage because I know you were concerned about it being 6 miles...and then look how you would have enjoyed that extra last mile! Great job!

WAY TO GO on losing the weight! Say good bye to those 3 pounds for good! Keep it up!

Manda - Sounds like your weekend was a bit off track. To have a busy Saturday and then a migraine on Sunday is no fun at all. I hope you were able to get your 3 mile run/walk in today!

Gretchen - How is your workout going? Can't wait to hear how you are doing with the speed work and before you know it...you will be running faster and stronger!

AFM - Got my long run in! We did 9.25 miles in HOT and HUMID weather! We were out early but it was still horrible. I do not think I have ever sweat this bad in my life (probably more then you ever wanted to know about me!). I don't know the exact temperature but it was in the mid 80s and just drippy outside. DH and I struggled for a bit but were able to push through and do it. We were so happy that we carried drinks with us on the run. We had bought the Powerade that will be passed out on our 1/2 marathon and thought we would try it...it was totally fine.

Today was a day off and tomorrow we are planning on running. I have no clue how far we will run because it is suppose to be 98° and humid here tomorrow. Because of work, we can't run until around 6:00. We also can't run late because of plans with the kids so it looks like we will experience an even hotter run.

Not planning on biking much this week either because it is just too hot to bike and then work.

Happy Training Rebels!
Jen

Jen- Michigan got hit with that heat wave too and I can't imagine doing the workout you did in it! GREAT JOB!

Liam- Good job on pushing though your race! Sorry it didn't go as planned, that is NEVER fun!

James- I hate loops as well however sometimes in all of their boredom they are necessary! How are the sinuses?

Jane- I am sure you provided motivation to the new runners on your group run! Good job on the miles you did!

Manda- last weekend is in the past, "Forget about iiiit" (Said in that ever known accent) and move the the furture. HOpefully this week will go much better for you

Gretchen- HEY nice to see you again! Remember me from the Fat Girls walking club?? Good job on keeping up with your mileage.

AFM- I came to the boards this morning becuase I have another walk to get in and a Cross-Fit routine. I was lacking motivation and knew that a stop by would lift my spirits and push me through the workout. I got in a workout yesterday on the TM, it was just TOO hot outside! This poor Michigan body just aint used to the heat and humidity yet! BONUS: I actually looked at my mileage when I was done! 2 miles in 30 minutes! Nothing like staying under the SWEEP time for the WDW 1/2!

P.S. Looks like our group is H-O-T-T!! Nothing like a May HEAT WAVE!

Nikki - I am also lacking motivation right now. I am going to say to both of us...GET THESE BODIES MOVING! :thumbsup2 I am really struggling with the whole diet thing and any workouts. I know that I have to figure out how to get motivated and back on track TODAY!

So, today...what will you commit to doing?

I will commit to biking to work even though it is unbelievably hot outside. I have to quit giving excuses and do what I know needs to be done.

That being said...I need to go so that I can follow through. Nikki - have a MOTIVATED day!

To all my Rebel friends...stay cool!
Jen

Jen- I am so glad we can motivate each other together! I hope you ride into work was great!!

My workout this morning went well! I walked at a quick pace with a friend and only had minimal shin pain in the beginning. After our 30 minute walk we did 2 rounds of 30 seconds of: Box jumps, modified pull ups (using playground equipment), and planks. I feel ALIVE people!!

Time to tackle the rest of the day!

Good Morning Rebels!

Nikki – Great workouts! Thanks for checking on me. I am doing better but I am having problems breathing again. I have just not been able to catch a break.

Jen – Wow, your first half is going to be here before you know it. Are you going for one more long run or are you going to start tapering?

I am glad that the sports drink is going to work out for you. On my long training walks, I have been carrying 10oz of G pro and 10oz of water. Saturday, I drained all 20oz in the first 5 miles. So, the water stop at my house was a necessity. I am with you though, it took some will power to move on too the second lap.

AFM – I completed my scheduled 4 mile walk today, with actual mileage of 4.41. My GPS watch was dead this morning, not sure why though. Regardless, I didn’t really need it today, because it was truly one of those days. So, I took my usual 4+ mile loop and got it done.

I am going to stop being discouraged because of my health. I have a 13.1 sticker on my car already and I am determined to put a 26.2 sticker right beside it!

Have a great day Rebels!

Good Morning Rebels -

Just checking in while I have time. Yesterday was a rest day for me. Did a little walking with the pup, but mostly watched True Blood on Demand. so addicting!

Nikki and Jen - Way to get each other moving. I love that commitment to each other to get out there and get moving.

James - i'm sorry to hear that your breathing issues are acting up again. Hopefully they'll go away again soon. At least you'll know that you have trained with these issues and if anything pops up near race day you will be prepared. No doubt you'll be driving around with your 26.2 sticker on your car.

Gretchen - Way to stick to your 3-4 mile plan even when you are not motivated. It looks like we're gonna get a little humidity this week here in the NY/NJ area. But I'm sure you will push through it. I would love to hear what you are doing to increase your pace.

Manda - Sometimes life gets in the way. Hope you made it out yesterday for your planned run/walk.

I have a scheduled 39 minutes to do tonight. I'm trying to increase my weekly runs to about 45 minutes to really get that fat burning going. So I'm increasing 3 minutes each week. Slow and steady. It's humid here and warm so I'm sure my pace will slow. But I'm pumped to get out there tonight.

Good afternoon Rebels!

Jane - You're right, we have been a talkative group lately. I love it!

"I feel so empty on the bottom right now" - where is the Tag Fairy when you need her?! ;)

Here's some PD that you get the new job that you're hoping for! pixiedust:

I don't think it's possible to drink too much water, unless you're drinking beyond the point of comfort, If it starts to feel like too much, then back off for a bit, but don't forget to keep it up.

I'm glad you're enjopying your group runs. That's great that you have a group with the same goals as you, and who are right there with you, running at the same pace and mileage. And congrats on you losing 3 pounds!! :cool1:

Nikki - How are your shins feeling? Have they loosened up any? I'm glad you enjoyed your Cross Fit session. It sounds interesting. And if it's fun, then you're way more likely to continue doing it.

I love that you came here this morning to get the motivation you needed! I hope we were able to provide it.

cwnhokie - Painting totally count as cross training!

Jen - How did your weekend go? Did you make healthier eating choices? I think it's great that you recognized your choices weren't the best and decided to change them. How about your water intake - were you able to up that?

I'm glad you found a bungee solution that works for you.

Yikes - 9.25 miles in hot and humid weather - yuck! You guys must have nerves of steel to finish the whole mileage in that.

Katie - I'm sorry your week has been so terrible. I'm hoping this one is better for you. And congrats on your 20th half! I bow down to you Jedi Master of the Half Marathon. :worship:

Pat - I can't imagine being able to just run over the Disney World for a few hours after work or on the weekend, or just heading to the Poly for lunch at Kona. That would be so amazing! I hope you get that job!

James - We're glad you checked in! Were you able to get in that 3 mile walk? And did you get to break in that new stroller?

Gretchen - The weather could be affecting you, or you could be hitting a plateau. Have you tried shaking up your routine? Doing things in a different way, maybe throwing in sprints or different cross training?

Liam - Great marathon report. I wonder if marathoners often stop at the houses and ask to use the facilities. I bet the people would love to help.

Your report is an excellent example of working through the hard part in a race and just finishing. You could have easily called it quits, but not only did you not give up, you made a personal record! That's amazing! I also saw the report of the runner who collapsed and died, and I am so glad that you made it away in relatively good health.

Barb (and Silent Bob) - Darn those race directors for not excluding the hills like you had been used to! :lmao: Congrats on Bob's PR! And congrats to you for beating your friends! :thumbsup2

James - Do you not carry water with you on your walks? Or do you use your house/water stop to refill your containers? I think it takes excellent will power to walk into your house and walk right back out and keep going. It would be so easy to just sit on the couch "for a minute" and then never get back up.

Hope your sinuses are feeling better.

Manda - Were you able to get in your 3-miler?

To everyone - Remember that one not-so-wise choice does not have to ruin your day or week or even hour. Stop, take a breath, and move on. Start over right now! :cheer2:
