This is us..

I don't get the whole William being gay thing.:confused3 I agree it feels last minute. I have to admit I got a little teary when they were at the hospital with the doctor. Then when Randall bought him the snow globe.:sad1: Toby showing up was a surprise. I'm guessing he will live because "Nothing bad ever happens on Christmas Eve."
Dr. K died on Christmas that was pretty bad.

If you watch the after shows he's lost quite a bit of weight since the beginning. I think they pad him for the show.

Ah, interesting. That would explain that because it is hard to cover up weight loss in the face without a fat suit. Good for him on his weight loss!

I didn't get the suicide thing. Randalls wife walked out on the balcony, the guy jumps and they were kind of like "meh, lets go home to the girls." and she was like, "Did you give him back the boat?" No real freak out, just a surprised look, then they just kind of left. I think in reality they would have completely been screaming, yelling for people, crying, hysterics, yanking out phones, calling for an ambulance etc.

Cant wait until Jan 10!

There was no suicide. Andy walked back inside when Randall was talking to Beth.

I like the arc of William being gay. It gives him some layers, and plenty of story to explore.

Toby - ugh. As soon as he stood up, I yelled "NO!". My husband collapsed recently, and it was so similar to that.

I looked over at my husband while watching last night and he was a blubbering mess.

I hope Toby returns.

NO NO NO, We can't lose Toby. I was so happy for him to come be with Kate and them get back together.

I didn't understand why they turned William gay all of a sudden. I'm really like Kevin right now.

The whole guy jumping thing was weird. Didn't really have anything to do with the plot.

Also, very sad that we lost Dr. K.

Dr. K didn't die?..

Dr K didn't die right? In the end he woke up in the hospital and Jack and Rebecca were there laughing with him and rejoicing that he was okay. Did I miss something??????????

The suicide scene allowed Randall to discuss forgiveness & love between a parent and child. He convinced his co-worker that he would be eliminating a chance at forgiveness if he killed himself. In the process you could see Randall reaching a different level of forgiveness with his Mother & William.

Does anyone else think there will be a link between Jesse (William's new partner) and Olivia? Too coincidental? She did mention to Kevin that she had a more complicated life.

The thing with Kate and her mom--I also think that's a case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't." I know that Kate blames her mom, but that doesn't mean that Rebecca is the sole cause of Kate's food issues.

I'm very curious about the origins of Kate's obesity. She's not just carrying 25 "too many donuts" pounds that anyone can put on. The degree to which she is obese almost always has some kind of "nature" (medical/genetic) basis behind it, which is then exacerbated by "nurture" (lifestyle/trauma/mental illness), especially because it started so early in her life.

Given that her parents are both lean and that the grandparents shown have all been lean or with "typical" middle age spread, I really want to know where this came from. Is it some kind of PCOS or other kind of endocrine disorder that is just bad genetic luck? Did it have something to do with being premature and a multiple?

Rebecca definitely did contribute to Kate's issues surrounding her weight, but, as with some of her mistakes with Randall, I firmly believe it was done out of ignorance and misguided loving concern rather than malice. She introduced a sense of shame to Kate, but, from what we've seen from Rebecca's own mother, I think she came by that honest. I'm assuming Rebecca was raised to value physical beauty and was expected to be slim and attractive before anything else. She would have had no idea what to do with a daughter putting on weight and couldn't see that her "Cosmo Magazine" attempts to address it or cover it up were terribly destructive.

Kate's issues are really about 20% her weight and 80% how she feels about it. Plenty of fat people are relatively content in their own skin. They may want to lose weight for any number of reasons, but it doesn't consume them like it does her and their lives revolve around their families, jobs, friends, and hobbies, not sticking shamey post-its on everything in their fridge.

That was a great episode. I did not like Toby before this episode, but I bawled when he fell! Wow that was a hard scene to watch. I really hope "Nothing Bad Happens on Christmas Eve".

I really liked the William has someone. I love Sloane and hope Kevin can grow up enough to be good for her.

Can't wait u til January for the next episode.

A couple of things:

In the cabin episode, didn't Sloan say her sister was having a baby? Was it the sister we saw at dinner? Was there a baby there and I missed it?

I think Toby will live and that this will be what really makes him take getting healthy seriously. They will show him getting thinner, revealing the real life shape of the actor who plays him. The effect this has on Kate will be part of the story.

I'm trying to decide whether Toby's health crisis will push Kate to do the weight loss surgery or drive her to losing the weight without the surgery. I didn't really care for Toby until tonight and then WHAM! I don't think he is going to die...or at least I really hope that he isn't.

William's story surprised me because we saw no indication that he had someone in his life and also because it seems a little out of character for him to have just left like that. But I like that they are adding more dimension to him in the present day.
