This Is Us- Season two

On this side discussion I have to disagree the saddest death on TV was McDreamy. I saw that coming from a mile away. It actually made me mad more than anything. Lazy writing.
Totally agree. I had accepted he was leaving the show. But I only cried over what a bad job they did with that story.

But he left the note on the outside of Kevin’s door. He knew he wasn’t home.

He knew he wasn’t at the time..maybe he thought Kevin came home after he was asleep.

On that note, don’t you think Kate would have said something before/as Jack was running back into the house? Not even a ‘phew, we all made it out safe’?

It’s Dr. Shepherd from Greys Anatomy.

I don't know who he is either, never watched the show, but I do know it was a medical drama and wasn't he a Mc Steamy, Mc Dreamy, or Mc Cheesy or something?

Here's a recap of the episode if you want:
http://hollywoodlife.com/2015/04/23/greys-anatomy-derek-dies-car-crash-season-11-recap/

(But don't read it if you want to go back and binge-watch the show!)

Ha! I’ve never seen Grays Anatomy and don’t plan on it. Too Squeamish for medical shows! I’ve never heard of McDreamy now that you all say it. How was his death sad though?

He was on his way to the airport (a bit of sad backstory in there, too, but I'll keep it simple). He witnessed a car accident, helped the people (including a very scared little kid) until the ambulances could get there, and then was about to leave when he got hit by another car.

Then we see him wheeled into the ER, seemingly unconscious, but we (the audience) can hear his thoughts. He (being a neurosurgeon) knows he needs a brain scan, but they try to fix another wound first, and he ends up dying.

Then (as if that wasn't enough) his wife (also a doctor) ends up having to console/work with the young doc who would have made the right call herself but couldn't convince the others. The show generally begins and ends as a voice-over of her reflective thoughts, so it was heart-wrenching!

The saddest death on TV was Colonel Blake on MASH. Loosely tied with Zeke on Parenthood. At least with Zeke you kind of knew it was coming. Still it wasn’t pretty in our house with DD and I both doing the big, ugly cry.

I am definitely with you on Colonel Blake!

(I can't say about Zeke, because I stopped watching Parenthood before that. - I loved the show at the beginning, but I had to give it up during the breast cancer storyline. I can be a real worry wart if I'm not careful, and dwelling on that on purpose for an hour a week was just not good for me.)

Just in case you didn't know, Christina ended up just fine! :goodvibes

I get that. I stopped watching ER when Dr. Carter and the intern were attacked and stabbed. It was shortly after I’d been stabbed. I had no idea it was coming. Completely traumatized me. Never turned it on again.

Yikes! - I don't blame you!

You were stabbed! Oh Lord, I'm so sorry - what a horror! :flower3: In case you were wondering, Dr. Carter recovered but the intern didn't, played by Kellie Martin. I don't remember ever seeing her in much of anything since then either.

I’ve told the story here a few times but yeah. I’m just happy to be here and glad it wasn’t worse. I remember picking that up from the promos and commercials.

After this week's shocking "This Is Us" ending, it appears one of the most-hated characters on television isn't a super-evil political mastermind, or even a superhero's archenemy, but rather, a device millions of people have in their homes: a slow cooker.

Many viewers threatened to throw out their slow-cooker devices after the intense episode aired, in which a faulty switch on an old, second-hand slow cooker sparked a massive blaze. But the formal brand name Crock-Pot wasn't actually mentioned during the tearjerker episode.

Still, days later, the popular brand is continuing to do damage control online.

But apparently one social media account hasn't been enough to stifle the fervor surrounding the now-controversial cooking device. In response to the internet raising arms against the beloved cooking apparatus, Crock-Pot started a Twitter account — @CrockPotCares — to respond to some of the attacks. The account is also commiserating with fans about Jack Pearson's untimely demise (though, of course, we still don't know exactly what happened).

The brand confirmed to TODAY Food that the account is actually Crock-Pot's first-ever official Twitter account.

Jack was one of our favorites too! Don’t worry, you can still make your favorite comfort foods in your #CROCKPOT with confidence. We want to assure you we rigorously test our products for safety. DM us and we’d be happy to tell you more about our safety standards.

After Tuesday night's episode aired, Crock-Pot (which is owned by Newell Brands) started to reassure fans that its modern products are completely safe to use.

"For nearly 50 years, with over 100 million Crock-Pots sold, we have never received any consumer complaints similar to the fictional events portrayed in last night’s episode. In fact, the safety and design of our product renders this type of event nearly impossible,” a representative for Crock-Pot said in a statement issued to media.

The statement continued, “In addition, and most relevant to the concerns consumers are having after watching the recent ‘This Is Us’ episode, our Crock-Pot slow cookers are low current, low wattage (typically no more than 200 or 300 watts) appliances with self-regulating, heating elements."

Ultimately, the slow cooker in question was a vintage machine with a switch that was clearly broken. Viewers saw Jack turn the machine off, but he left it plugged in, and threw a wet rag next to it.

Of course, accidents do happen but is a slow cooker really to blame here? And could this ever happen in real life? TODAY Food reached out to the experts.

"The safety standards of current machines are obviously far superior to what they were several decades ago," Phyllis Good, a slow cooker expert and author of "Stock The Crock," told TODAY Food.

Of course, accidents do happen and a manufacturer isn't responsible for careless actions of all users. "The only way the slow cooker could have shorted out is if it was still plugged in while Jack was washing it ... never mind that he had flipped off the switch. What he did is just asking for trouble," said Good.

So, do we have anything to worry about when it comes to preparing our next slow-cooker meal?

Yes and no.

"Any appliances should be properly maintained and unplugged after each use," John V. Murray, Chief Fire Safety Instructor at Nassau County Firefighters Museum, tells TODAY Food. He also advises home cooks to always thoroughly review any manufacturers' guidelines for safe use.

"Check the electrical components, such as the wiring, plug, and any switches to ensure that they are in proper working order," added Murray. Also, regularly check to make sure the entire cord is intact, and that there are no cracks or frays in the wire.

When it comes to slow cookers specifically, the fire chief advises home cooks to also check the unit itself for any cracks or dents. If you see any, it might be time for a new one. "When in use, a slow cooker, or any small kitchen appliance, should have clear space around and above it — not touching anything that is combustible, such as curtains, towels, or papers," said Murray. The slow cooker should also be sitting on a flat, non-combustible surface whenever it's in use.

We get why people are upset. But in all seriousness we want people to know that they are safe when using a #CrockPot Slow Cooker.

"Slow cookers are generally safe appliances, as long as proper safety precautions are taken, as with any kitchen appliance," Murray continued. "Always remember to unplug appliances when not in use and store in a safe space. Kitchen fires are the leading cause of house fires in the United States."

Of course, there was another malfunctioning household appliance that played a potentially villainous role in the infamous episode: the Pearson family's smoke alarm was not in proper operating condition and the family had run out of batteries. Says Murray, "Alarms equipped with either removable or sealed-in batteries both need to be tested. Removable batteries should be replaced, and sealed-in batteries should be checked to confirm they are functioning."

Editor's note: This article was revised to reflect that the slow cooker depicted on the program was not identified by any brand name.

"Revenge of the Crock-Pot".

FWIW, I'm glad they are proactively fighting back. The whole thing seems quite unfortunate.

Maybe they should have left a faulty iron on or something. At least then it wouldn't have been so closely affiliated with one specific brand.

love of the character himself, or whether we liked the old or new episodes better - it's the ironic tragedy of surviving all that time in Korea, and then dying once you're finally on your way home!
LOL He died cause the writer were made at wanted me clear he wasn't coming back if his new slow flopped lol

A lot of blasts from the pasts guest starring, eh? Some brilliant actors, of course starting day one with Gerald Mcraney.

Weirdly enough, the man who gave the crockpot played fire chief Jerry on Rescue Me - oh how I loved that show. Reminiscing about his prior role took me out of the scenes a bit.

And then there was Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull - Mambo Kings) and Garrett Morris (SNL) at the apartment.

Yep on both characters.

And an aside, Shonda has always said that she was in an awful position as she could not see them separating or divorcing, when Dempsey decided he was leaving Grey's. I felt very little, which seemed strange. I guess because I kept hearing how unhappy Demsey was near the end.

Some ridiculous scenes, but I did like his talking to the doctors internally.

To your list I would add ----

George on Grey's Anatomy - holy crap I remember gasping as I realized what was coming. I was at my parents and I think they thought their daughter had gone cuckoo as I screamed at the tv.

And of course the entire cast of Six Feet Under to Sia's Breathe Me. Sigh, big huge sigh - can't even replay it in my head without feeling way too much.
