If Randall already knew he was adopted, why was he asking about looking different from the rest of the family?

I hadn't thought about Kate and Kevin not knowing about Kyle. That wouldn't be fair to them either. But if they had known, they probably would have told Randall about it.

I'm thinking that Kate and Kevin don't know either. How could they have not slipped on that?

I enjoyed last night's episode but one thing that annoyed me was the home birth. Randall was able to drive to and from the hardware store with no issues, but an ambulance couldn't make it after calling 911 because the streets were closed for Halloween? Am I the only one that found that odd?

When Rebecca asked him how he got there, he said he parked on Main St. and ran. (Didn't say Main ST, but I can't remember the street name)

Although I have never heard of streets being closed for Halloween.

I think he was letting Rebecca know he felt different from the family. He was venting. He said, "nobody looks like me." He was stating a fact and letting her know if bothered him, that he felt different. It is very common for children who are a different race than their parents to feel different and alienated from their culture. He wasn't saying "Why am I black and you, dad and my siblings are white? How is that possible?"

He knows he was adopted, he just feels different from the rest of the family.

I loved Rebecca talking to the baby about Jack. I missed Toby but I think I'm Toby fan on this message board lol. I;m glad to see Miguel and Rebecca didn't get together right away after Jack death.

I was thinking this also. These kids are 10 and they don't know that they had a sibling that died? Sad to think they never talk about Kyle - like he was just forgotten.

I know someone whose twin died at birth and wasn’t told until 14. It seemed odd to me, too.

I think when he started out for the hardware store it was before trick or treat time. By the time he got home, the crowds had begun. So he parked and ran to the house.

A neighborhood we used to live in was mobbed at Halloween. Cars parked so tight they almost blocked the entry, wall to wall people and police there at the neighborhood intersection directing traffic where it met the main road. So I could see an emergency vehicle being delayed.

Used to buy 15 big bags of candy and still turned the lights out early.

I have never heard of closing streets for Halloween. It's just something made up for tv. They needed a reason for Beth to give birth at home and the emergency vehicles unable to get through. For some reason they wanted Randall to take charge and deliver his child. That was just a way to make it happen.

It seemed like Randall didn't want to go to their house for candy because at some previous time they had let out that he was adopted because his parents lost a baby.

Therefore he felt uncomfortable going to their house on Halloween - because of the previous interaction.

Even though it was wrong I can see how neighbours could stupidly say something to Randall. The way he relayed the conversation, as others have said, it seemed like their intent was to make him realize how special he was to his parents. Absolutely stupid decision, especially since he is a child and might not know anything about Kyle, but I can see how it happens. Heck I have a family member who likes to always make sure people know that "she knows things", despite how utterly inappropriate.

When I was little (younger than ten) there was an adopted girl in our neighborhood, who was 7 yrs old IIRC, but we were told (through the grapevine) not to mention adoption to her because she wasn't aware she'd been adopted. That's so wrong on so many levels.

Where did you watch it? They cut the Kevin Spacey for the broadcast airing and replaced it with Christian Bale.

We just watched the latest episode tonight. Wow. That was a good one. I feel like I need to just sit and quietly live with it for a bit. The thing that I loved most about this episode is that it can all be wrapped up in Rebecca's speech to baby Tess about how the middle parts are where you get lost sometimes but that doesn't necessarily signal an end; instead, it can lead to a beautiful beginning. That is a truth to hold on to.

I was sad to feel like the show reinforced that Jack dies in the fire, though. I was really hoping for a kinder death for Jack, but Kevin and Kate's conversation about her sitting in front of where the house used to be like she was waiting for him to come back seems like a fire death is a certainty.

This sounds very much like a neighborhood near us, too. We used to go to a yearly Halloween party in the neighborhood and everyone invited brought bags of candy. The candy was gone in about 20 minutes. Literally thousands of people would show up to trick or treat in that neighborhood because it was such a Halloween destination. The streets weren't officially closed, but driving down them would not have been easy. My daughter outgrew this madness a few years ago, so I don't know if it's still like that or not.

This was a great episode. So much to take in with a new time period in the characters lives being shown to us for the first time. I especially loved the scene in the hardware store and also the scene at the end with Rebecca talking to the babies in both time periods. Kate and Kevin made really awful choices in their 20's, no doubt about that. Both came across as selfish, but also stuck in low points in their lives.

Anyway, it was nice to have some gaps in the timeline filled in, and I felt like this episode was really well done with great acting.

That’s an interesting thought. When I watched the episode I thought Randall didn’t want to go to the Larson’s because they weren’t on his schedule. When he was made to go, that’s when they mentioned Kyle. I guess they could have mentioned it earlier too.
