This Is Us- Season two

I should probably apologize to the Dis for fangirling about him so far and in the future...I haven't thought a man on TV was so attractive since Eric Northman and TrueBlood went off the air.

I'm not typically the fangirl type, but if I got one of those smiles from him, I'd simply melt. (And now I have to go see who Eric Northman is.)

On a random, tangent side note here if you don't mind me asking what's the reason behind the medical aspect?
Well there's a joking/cynical side when we're watching dateline or 48 hrs. etc where a husband murdered the wife etc. lol, but mainly it's just because we feel like we know each other better than anyone and feel that we'd be more able to make a rational decision based on what the person in the hospital would want. - To my knowledge none of us have actually done it, just something we joke about that has truth behind it.

Mandy Moore has said that fans should read into three clues in the episode:

the cast on Kevin
the dog
Randall's girlfriend

I saw that those were clues, too. I wonder if they show that some time has passed between Rebecca going to get Jack and the fire and that they had worked their way back into a healed family again. The kids are about the same age, so it couldn't have been years and years, but they wouldn't have aged much in a year or so.

It looked like Rebecca was wearing a football jersey, and there is a football on Kevin's cast. Do you think he was playing football, and that is why he had a cast on?

Since Randall is such a perfectionist and has anxiety, I can't see him and Beth adopting an older troubled child. Kids who were adopted as infants have enough emotional baggage, dealing with their issues of being abandoned by their birth parents. How will Randall and Beth deal with an older kid who's been through several foster families, or the trauma that necessitated the kid being available for adoption?

I’m not sure I’m following here. Why would that make them unsuitable to adopt an older child? Randall doesn’t expect perfection from others, just from himself. A lot of his issues were intensified because of the pressure of his job. I get the impression he’ll be a stay at home dad so he’s not going to have to be dealing with that.

That's what I thought too, that Randall would stay home. I think meeting, then loosing, William changed him. He wants to adopt because he knows what it's like to be adopted and the issues involved. He quit his job and I think he feels this is his purpose and he can kind of honor William.

When Beth said she'd like to adopt an older child, they were watching teens who were boozing in the park. Adopting a kid with those kind of problems won't be easy. Since Randall quit his job because it was too stressful, has he "de-stressed" enough to handle a troubled teen? That's one of the toughest jobs on the planet.

My son married a girl with a baby -- abandoned by the birth father who tried to reconnect with her when she was 19. The biological gma wanted to be involved too, but the baby was no longer a baby and it wasn't that simple for them to make up for all the years they lost. They tried, but it was an utter failure, and they're back out of each other's lives. Which is why I question the whole bit about Randall welcoming his "sperm donor" into his life.

I realize different strokes for different folks -- I wouldn't have let a Manny live in my basement either.

I was bored with the episode. And by bored it was almost because it was one small drama to the next. I actually prefer more subtle episodes. And the background music was getting to me for some strange reason.

I guess I am alone in feeling underwhelmed. :drinking1 :goodvibes

Beth -

* Quite a few of us stated that we loved her character after some shared dislike on the original thread.
* She was the only part that didn't completely bore me in the episode

*Let's see what her character has dealt with -

Seems like her father passed away not too many years ago. And because of cancer, correct? So she was probably triggered by everything around her. She doesn't seem like she was ever much a fan of Rebecca over the years. So through that lens she dealt with how her MIL betrayed her husband with keeping Randall's father away (and a black man at that considering young Randall ached for that connection - I know Rebecca's reasoning just stating Beth's side). In a matter of weeks she has two men moved into her house without much input from her, if any. And she is a mother trying to determine what is best for their girls, especially William being a stranger at that point. Randall didn't really go much into that thought process as their father (and yes it turned out wonderfully and life changing). Randall is ill and she is worrying about him. She loses William who she became very close to in the end. Her husband is mourning and it is very hard to watch a loved one suffer. And then he quits his job/career. Not arguing if it was the best decision, it seemed necessary, but he did it on his own without talking to her. So she is the only one working. She thought she was pregnant and went through the emotions of that possibility. And now her husband announces that they need to adopt a baby. More than that he almost immediately tells her to get on board with a huge life-changing event because he wants/needs it.

Saint Beth! I love how her character seems so real. Doesn't hide the ugly.

Toby - annoying.

Once again Toby, right or wrong in your eyes - this is Kate. This is your girlfriend/fiance. She is close to her family and is used to going to Kevin. And shares a birthday with him. That's how it has been done. If this isn't something that he can deal with in marriage, then move on. I don't see it changing.

Not even admonishing his feelings, but share them at an appropriate time. Not like a five year old on her birthday.

I didn't seem to care about the Rebecca/Jack's storyline. Have no clue why.

You're not alone. DH & I were bored too.

I'm wondering if by "older kid" Beth doesn't necessarily mean a teen of the age they were observing, but an elementary age kid on his way to being one of those teens in the park? They have to think of their own girls too, and I expect it would be even harder for them to adjust to new sibling who was both the neediest and much older at the same time.

That's what I was thinking. A child who is out of the diaper stage, no baby equipment, etc.

____________

Such difficult decisions.

I was thinking the same thing. But then I thought probably not as the writers will most likely want the drama of a teenager. And then becoming an adult character for the series in no time.

Yes. I don;t remember exact workds, but it was soemthign like you got lucky, that (the boy drinking) could have been you. I took that to mean let's choose a kid before that happens to him/her.

You're not alone. This was the first episode I've watched that I haven't cried. It was a little "eh" for me as well...
I think the show was trying to get the hype up like "who shot JR" from the show Dallas and it sort of back fired on them. Everyone was very vested with the show last April/May and couldn't wait to find out how Jack died. Making us wait again, it was a let down and the show was boring.

Just finished watching - and first of all, I watched all of the first season on amazon and have to say that I might purchase this season also since there are SO MANY commercials! I don't really watch tv at all though so maybe that's a normal amount for any show?

You can watch it the next day on Hulu ($7.99/month or $4.99/month for students with Premium spotify accounts - still commercials, but maybe not as many)! And you can also upgrade to Hulu Premium with no commercials ($11.99/month). If you don't already have cable, it might be a better value on Hulu. I think they do a free trial period, too.
