I usually subscribe without email notification. So I can't say one way or the other.

I found the email notification clogged up my email. So I only subscribe with no email notification now. I use my User CP to keep track of the threads rather than rely on email for new posts.

I use the email notification because I find it usually takes me to the first unread post, whereas going through the UserCP is finicky and sometimes it takes me to the very last post.
