The most interesting part is that it’s now empty.Ha! The most interesting part of your picture is the bottle of Jack off to the side.
We saw it too. We waited for hours and it was completely worth it.We were fortunate to view this exhibit in New Orleans in 1977. I just aged myself.
I think that's because:The part that most people in this thread are in denial about, is the manner and violent behaviors of these protestors/rioters. If people felt that removing some statues was the right thing to do, how about doing it civilly, reaching out to governors/mayors of the cities where they are??? Why the violence??? Giving a pass to these violent rioters and letting them break the law and watching apparently sane people justify it, is more disturbing then the destructive, law-breaking criminals!

I think that's because:
a. it's an emotional thing, reacting rationally to something emotional is not something each person is capable of.
b. history is not on the side of civility. When we look at the right to vote for women, the social conditions that led to the French revolution etc. (I am not American and also not an expert on American history, but I think we can include the abolishment of slavery in the US in this list as well). These kind of great changes were initially tried to be made in a civil way. By having those speaking for a minority trying to negotiate. Usually those who were in charge dismissed the minority as they were not seen as important ('it will pass', 'they don't know what is good for them, we do'). Only when the minority shows they are serious about this, changes are set into motion.
To me there is a difference between the rioters who riot because the thrill of fighting, destroying and looting etc, and those who protest and take down a symbol of their suppression while doing so. Compare it to the Iraqis taking down the statue of Saddam Hussein in 2003.
It's a complicated discussion as some people who have a statue on one hand did great things, and on the other hand also did terrible things. And we get back to what the Netflix series The Good Place is basically about: How many good deeds do you need to do, to justify your bad deeds? Or as soon as there is one bad deed, you are thrown into the Bad Place for all eternity.
Yes, in a perfect world, you would want all changes to be made without violence or bloodshed. Only, we do not live in that perfect world.
STOP
People have spent YEARS reaching out government officials about removing the statues. Do you know what happened? Folks tried to silence them by screaming about PC running amok. Talk radio hosts and some political folks started blowing their dog whistles.
This isn't new.

By stop, I mean stop acting like this is something new. Your OPINION doesn't change history or the facts. What do you mean "STOP"??? Only you should give your opinion???
Those "generals in an army" were fighting to keep a system that enslaved, murdered, raped, tortured...a race of people. Saddam Hussein was a part of Iraq's history.I get some of what you said but sorry we cannot compare Saddam Hussein, who murdered thousands of people to generals in an army, which is part of our American history, right or wrong!!! IMO, the accusations and unfounded biased has gone way overboard!!! My children's high school is changing their mascot, which is a cowboy because the school administration is saying "cowboy" is racist and sexist. It is also costing the taxpayers over $100,000.00 because they have to rip up the football field which they just installed a few years ago and that alone is going to cost over $76,000.00. What's scary is that the school administration's mindset!!! Many parents are up in arms about this irrational thinking.
Why can’t you compare both? Hussein was their leader. He is a part of their history. A part I’m sure they’ll never forget, but do not want to celebrate. It’s actually very much the same.I get some of what you said but sorry we cannot compare Saddam Hussein, who murdered thousands of people to generals in an army, which is part of our American history, right or wrong!!! Since you don't object to what some of our marines did in Iraq, I'mgoing to say that it is.OK, so violence and breaking the law is OK???

Funny how it's fine for one but not the other.
That's how I feel about Southern ComfortI got sick on Jack Daniels in High School. I’m 51 and still can’t stand the smell. Young and dumb.
Hitler is part of Germany's history. Do you think they have statues of him in town squares?I get some of what you said but sorry we cannot compare Saddam Hussein, who murdered thousands of people to generals in an army, which is part of our American history, right or wrong!!! Americans won’t forget our history because a statue came down. Has anybody forgotten who Hitler was because there aren’t any statues in the town square of him? Who actually learns their history from a statue anyway?
The truth is our teaching of history is abysmal in this country and it needs a complete overhaul anyway. Only those doing research on their own have any idea what’s really happened here.
Are there people who just wanted to destroy and know nothing about history apparently- yes, of course as is evident by the Grant statue being taken down. But it’s important to not use the outliers as the explanation for the bigger picture.
