I really love Barry Manilow which for some reason is just about the most uncool thing a person can say. And it's not something I'll admit to just anybody. I'm not a fanatic or anything but I really like his more popular hits.

One time when we still lived in CA. I mentioned to my mom that DH was taking me to a Barry Manilow and she said she didn't realize I liked him. I said yes and she said she never did enjoy his music but Richard always had. Richard is the name of my real dad who I never knew.

That secretly made me feel very pleased to have this "link" to my real dad even though I know there's alot of people who like Barry Manilow. At least I'm hoping there is?! Any others willing to fess up?

Heck, I grew up on Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand, and Neil Diamond. We took my Mom to a Barry Manilow concert for her birthday in the early 90s -- the entire family had a great time.

In fact, DH and I just got back on Tuesday from seeing him in Las Vegas. We flew out on Sunday evening, saw Barry TWICE on Monday (it was a special taping for PBS and I got the tickets for FREE through the fan club) and we flew back on Tuesday.

I have loved him since I was a kid. I remember seeing him on The Muppet Show when I was a little girl (singing Copacabana with the Muppets acting it out) and I was hooked!

Way way back in high school we used to play scrabble and use a Barry album as the fourth player. We'd all take turns playing for Barry. He'd usually beat my best friend!

I've seen him so many times in concert, even once by accident in London - I was there on vacation, saw a crowd gathered at the back of Tower records, joined the crowd, gave up and walked away just as a limo came around the corner. There was Barry waving only to me! I was SO excited!!

Much to my DH's chagrin, I bought "Ultimate Manilow"--I like to torture him by popping it in the car CD player when he's not looking.
When I'm driving and listening, I just sinnnng as loud as I can. You can't fully appreciate this, of course, unless you realize how truly dreadully I sing. My singing voice is so bad, it actually physically pains me to sing. No, really. But I just sing and get all teary-eyed (due in part to the pathos behind "Looks Like We Made it" and in part to my literally painful singing). Dang that man can write a song!

I would love to see Barry Manilow in concert. I had my chance in 7th grade when my mom offered to take me, but I was too "cool" to risk anyone finding out. I have seen Neil Diamond though.

OMG - how on EARTH did I miss this thread??? Check the avatar, and the tag - everyone on the DIS who knows me, knows I've loved Barry for YEARS. Matter of fact, the pet calendar is a charity project for a Manilow fan club that I help run.

Mmm...Barry!
We saw him last Nov..it was DH's birthday gift to himself. I was actually NOT a Fanilow until I met DH. I thought Barry was a total geek, but DH loves him. He would pick me up for a date and play his "Even Now" cd until I wanted to scream. But after awhile..he kind of..I dunno. Grew on me. And I fell in luuuurve.
I know both times we've seen him in concert (2002-Ultimate Manilow Tour and 2004 One More Night One Last Time Tour), I was one of the youngest in the crowd. At the UM tour, I actually ran into a friend of my mother's who was sitting in the lawn section (Smirnoff Music Center, Dallas). She seemed rather suprised someone my age could be bouncy-shrieky schoolgirl crazy over Barry Manilow.
So what's everybody's favorite Barry songs? I think my favorite has to be "Could It Be Magic" as well as "Even Now" and "Freddy Said" from the At The Mayflower CD.
