It's so weird to me that people would think this is RCCL's fault. Holding a child up to any window can be dangerous. It wasn't at her level - she had no access to it without the grandfather's help.

Looking at the deck plan, the kids' area seems to be in the middle of the deck from side to side - so, away from the wIndows as much as possible - and the open window in question appears to be a bit aft of that. More in line with the hot tub.

This is one of the things that bothers me - stories keep saying she was "in a children's play area". If they'll exaggerate that much about where the window actually was, it makes me question the rest of what they say.

I know they're devastated. I know they're angry. Who wouldn't be? But the cruise line did do something to keep people away from the windows - they put up railings, which are barriers, not seats. I can see the desire to spread the word so it doesn't happen to anyone else, but I think if this actually goes to trial, the family will lose.

Well that's unfortunate what they used their time on tv to do, not surprised though. I go back to my original comment on this thread--they didn't think about the danger involved with picking a child up like that; maybe they've done it many times over only this time something tragic happened. That doesn't mean you go blaming someone else and for the reason they are blaming--get different ventilation methods??

And I agree it's far more likely a settlement occurs if for no other reason than to not have the cruise line's name dragged through the mud. And there will be people who will see the settlement as an admission of guilt on the cruise line's side.

The comments on the Yahoo article on the Today interview were universally blaming the grandfather. I don't think I saw a single person who thought the cruise line was at fault.

The cruise line will quietly settle with the family (and the lawyer will get his fat cut). They just need this to go away. The lawyer knows this, and played a strong card with the family's television appearance. Of course, the network also played right into his hands for their own selfish reasons.

I went in hoping for the best with this interview. And ... disappointed.

Still very sad for this family. It was a freak accident. I truly believe the grandpa didn't realize the window was open. How could he not realize, idk. But he didn't, and he will suffer for the rest of his life with this. My heart couldn't take that. I feel so sorry for him.

With all that said, I am irritated. Irritated that this family is placing 100% blame on RCCL. The mom's line of "get a fan" really bugged me. I know she is grieving and wanting to place blame, but it is misguided. I hope in time they will see the incident for what it was. A terrible, terrible tragic accident, but not the cruise ships fault. The grandfather hoisted her up, not RCCL!! And QUIT saying it was child's play area! It is a communal area for all passengers! They are making it sound like it was the kids club with adolescence running around wild with windows wide open at their height. This interview did nothing to help this family in my eye. I hope RCCL doesn't settle. They likely will, but it is a shame.

I didn’t see the interview. I do feel sympathy for these parents. They lost their baby in an instant and their pain must be unbearable. However, people need to have personal responsibility. It was the grandfather’s actions that directly resulted in the child’s death. I hope common sense prevails.

The graphics showed open area, nothing obstructing it. WIDE OPEN, with no lounge chairs, no table & chairs - nothing. Which clearly isn't true. Also, it showed a ever so faint tint. Barely noticeable, nothing like the real thing.

It’s an obvious manipulation technique. The cruise line isn’t going to provide a public rebuttal so the family can present their narrative and spin it however they want.

I agree. I just think people hear open window in children's play area they don't read any further. I've read responses on the Today FB page where people are asking why they have windows in a children play area where kids can climb and fall out. Which is not factual at all.

I was reading FB page too. Nice to read that most people agree that it isn't the cruise lines fault. It has been pretty respectful. Most feel horrible for this family, but think placing blame on RCCL (and a potential pending lawsuit) is bull. Our society needs to get back to personal accountability.

I feel bad for the cruise line either way (obviously not in place of feeling bad for the family! - but in addition to.) If they don't settle, the whole thing stays in the spotlight. If they do settle, it looks like an admission of guilt. They can win legally, but I still think this is going to cost them new business because people who were thinking of bringing their family on a cruise will now be scared to.

There are so many places in Disneyland that have railings. And if you placed a toddler on the railing and let go of them, they could fall off and become injured. The argument that the window was in a children’s play area makes no sense to me. Even in Disneyland, which is a theme park for children, railings are not a safe place to stand children.

It's a cruise ship. The whole thing is open air with railings, including stateroom balconies, over which a fall is likely to be deadly. Screens over that open window??? Really??
