this is disgusting

Depending on the state laws, sometimes places have to throw out perfectly good food if, say, the packaging gets wet (even if the food is in an inner wrapper) or if the label comes off. There are people who get a good portion of their daily food from dumpster diving and other "scavenged" sources (gleaning, for example, where they pick up what's left in the fields after farmers have harvested). It might not be your choice--mine either--but I can understand why some would retrieve otherwise acceptable food.

On a different note, you seem to post a LOT about your friend's quirks and foibles. You might think about whether that's a true act of friendship. I know I would be peeved if my friend was posting all about me on a message board.

oh I know vandvsmama I already told DH that until she comes back to earth Im going think of ways since we usually to go lunch after bingo Ill come up with reasons why I cant go
Ill still go to bingo cause I do like to play and as long as we met those other two women

its hard though since weve been friends since freshmen in high school and now were pushing 70 but
I really think we need to go separate ways at least for a bit
we sure dont have anything in common anymore
Has your friend always been a bit “quirky”? Since you mentioned you are both almost 70 I might wonder if there is something else going on—maybe a health issue like dementia or even mental illness.

We’ve been friends since fresh men in high school. She’s always been very nieve and gullible. But I’d say in about the last 3 to 4 years she’s been acting like she’s had to many engery drinks.
Interesting thought though about dementia or other things could be going on.
Thanks for the insight

On the one hand, food waste is horrible in this country so I'm kind of glad there are some people out there "finding" food that is still good and putting it to use.

On the other hand, I'm not going to be eating it.:lmao:

Is it possible money is now a significant strain? I see lots of people using the pantry these days so I guess that is where my mind went, she may be very accustomed to such. If it was me I think I would maybe pack a few sandwiches next time with one or two extra and see if she takes the extra, that would be confirmation for me TBH

Yeah - if people know the amount of waste between supermarkets, restaurants and small shops they might be shocked.

I’d just ‘thanks, no thanks’ and bring my own snack.

Maybe after complete inspection I’d dare to partake if tempting lol. I’m up for the occasional risk in life if it’s low enough.

Reminds me of when trying to explain something to my young adult child by pointing out you should never bring open packages where someone else is hosting. I dunno… it’s just the etiquette we were raised. He did make me question it though. It could come down to the circumstances like how close the friends are and what type of gathering. I still think it’s a good rule of thumb! I’m not going to be the one bringing already opened chips and sodas to a cookout.
Yep, recently my mother went to a church brunch potluck type of thing (happens regularly every week), & later that day wasn't feeling well, & went to the doctor the next day & they said she had Opioids in her system. She doesn't have any meds like that at home, so it definitely came from somewhere else, & that was the only place she ate that day, so I can agree with not eating anything that is open. I think Mable's meds fell into the potato salad or something while they were making it. lol

Your friend is weird.
Definitely agree.!!

Yeah - I am always a bit iffy about pot lucks or even eating at a neighbors unless I know then really well and even then..iffy.

Reminds me to the guy on cheapskates that treated his friends to a dinner of fish heads.
I Romberg a show like that from years ago. A mother made pizza and salad from stuff she scrounged up and picked out of her lawn. Seriously I don’t trust much of what people bring

I'm sure completely different from your situation, but my grandparents often used the dandelions for a salad.
Its not that unusual, although I never ate it.

They also had a very large garden and grew all sorts of things from cucumbers to watermelon.
Also grape vines a pear tree - so they probably knew what they were doing.

I can sometimes grow tomatoes - on the same land.

My Italian grandmother did this, too--and, like you, I never had it.

But--foraging is a thing, too. Knowledgeable people can live off the land and eat well, if they know what they're doing. (I don't, to be clear!) Unless the woman was literally passing off grass clippings as "salad", it could have been perfectly edible and tasty.

I think a lot of people these days forget that it used to be common, even in cities, to have gardens and chickens, maybe a goat as food sources. I've had more than one meal of roadkill venison--it's a shame to waste the meat after an encounter with a car. DH and I were volunteer firefighters, the rule was "first one to the scene gets the venison" (assuming the driver didn't want it).

I can't stop picturing this...
