If she can't get a refund (and is looking at losing full price) could she just pay the change fee for a cheaper flight and get credit for the difference. For example, say the original ticket was $300, change fee is $50. If she could change it to for a flight that only costs $200, she could at least recoup $50.
One of my very few airline stories... I had a flight on NW once and my original choice of dates was outrageous so I went with another return date. During my trip I decided to stay longer so I called to change the flight to the day I originally wanted. I got it, with a $125 refund, and no change fee. Never hurts to call.
