I am SO glad to see that other people have concerns about not locking luggage. Yes I do keep my camera and other "valuables" with me. But think about what it would cost to replace your clothing and shoes: A good pair of walking shoes - $75, jeans - $30, bras - $20 each, swimsuit - $50, and we haven't even included shirts, jackets, dresses, belts, make-up, hair dryer. Yikes!

I wanted to carry our luggage off, not because of concerns, but because I did want to spend that precious last night having to pack!!! In the end, DH decided, hey, lets throw everything in our suitcases and let DCL handle it for us. It was midnight, well past the recommended deadline. Our room steward said, 'No problem!" Man, that was nice having a sit-down breakfast and just walking off that ship. NO hassle.

Okay, here is my question. What shocked me was that all the luggage is delivered to your door OUTSIDE of your room! Why could it not be set inside??? It just seemed so strange to see all that luggage sitting out in the open like that. And, it is not like when you put it out on that last night where the stewards whisk it away. Some luggage may sit there for quite a while!

So, anybody from DCL reading this... Could the luggage not be set inside the Staterooms???

the idea of not locking baggage that's sent on airplanes is totally ridiculous....from the point of view of terrorism, not theft....
anyone could stick anything in your luggage...
that is why the airline we fly for our overseas segment of the trip is VERY wary of unlocked luggage arriving in transit from other airlines ....they check it with a fine-toothed comb..
and if the luggage gets lost in transit, they hold the suitcase in quarantine for a minimum of a week before they will let it on one of their airplanes...
but the US airline industry is just not geared for adequately handling the terrorist threat....unlocked luggage is a perfect example....

I agree. When I first started reading about cruises and read about the luggage taken to the staterooms- I wrongly assumed they meant putting it inside the door! It was only recently that I learned it meant outside the doors! I guess the "hard part" of putting it inside would mean they had to have a key that would unlock all the doors to be able to open them and put them inside? But then I would assume those that are in that area and responsible for putting the bags there would be able to get in JUST like the stewards are able to get in to clean the rooms/etc? Or maybe not... I dunno. But like yourself- even not haven cruised yet- I can already visualize how odd it would be to have all that luggage sitting outside the doors. Especially because with 5 of us including 3 children- we never tend to travel "light". LOL We usually have a lot of checked bags.... so we don't have to carry much on the flight.

I agree... especially more expensive clothing for all 5 of us for semi-formal and formal evenings and such. I can't take all that on carry on bags. LOL

Just a small clarification - I believe the original post stated that the luggage is set outside the night before for airline passengers and this the case for everyone - not just those flying. Didn't want someone to read this and think they were out of the water because they weren't flying.

I like the idea. And it wasn't that much of a hassle when we got to the holding area to pick up our luggage the next day. It was easy to find. I also like the idea of this because then the next morning when we are ready to get off the ship the luggage has already gone through search and is ready to go. Can you imagine the hundreds of people standing in line waiting to have their luggage checked? YIKES.

When I flew in April we couldn't have our luggage locked. And they did open it and check it. And that was a domestic flight. Didn't bother me except I had driven to where I was at and flew home and had my pillow in my suitcase - had a hard time getting it in there. The guy that was checking my luggage laughed and was nice when we were reclosing the suitcase. Then they let me lock the suitcase - no problems. And the TSA now has locks they will let you use (I don't know if there is a fee) or something. My husband was telling me about this a few weeks ago when he got home from traveling for work.

Your room host does collect your bags. They work late that night on luggage duty.

Without listing all the facts, it boils down to no one really has any insentive to steal your luggage from the hall.

If luggage is stolen, it is more likely to be stolen from the pickup area (where someone mistakes your luggage for their's and doesn't bother checking the tags) or lost by the air line.

I could see there being an incentive at the BEGINNING of the trip when they are left outside until you go put them in your room... but not at the end I suppose. Even though there might be more goodies in there at the end- if they took the entire thing... where would they put it? They would look weird taking bags out in the morning- right? (large ones I mean) and they couldn't just leave it in their rooms and implicate themselves in the crime. LOL
