Thinking of buying but got a question...

Hopefully one or more of you can help me out. I did a search but could not really find the answer I was looking for. My DH has concerns that the points required per night could go up. From what I understand they can be "ajusted" meaning if there is an increase on weekday points there must be a decrease on weekend points. Or that the season's dates can be changed. If this is true, then there is still a problem if you always travel on the weekends and your stay is during the week.(This is how we travel). So for us, it would be an increase. Have there been any increases in points per day so far? The main reason for use to purchase would be a hedge against inflation. If we always have a risk of point increases that takes away some of the value of joining. Any insight on this issue would be a great help to me! TIA

The total number of points cannot increase for the year, can only be adjusted. So if one area goes up, another must come down.

Historically, the changes have been minor, almost non-existant.

So, as a hedge against inflation, it should work.

There is a very real chance they could raise weekday points and lower weekend points. They would need to have the same total points for the year, but that is an adjustment that could definitely be made.

They had a survey a few years ago with just that question on it. A majority, I believe it was a pretty large majority, said that they did not want to see that adjustment. We had a report that the lower occupany rate on the weekends was getting better. It may never happen.

This new recent advent of renting on Ebay may be a problem. People there are only renting weekdays. If that becomes more prevelant, DVC may have no choice but to make that adjustment.

Perdidobay you have a good understanding of the point system. For DVC resorts, the total pool of points stays the same but can be adjusted. You will not see the amount of points going up every year like a cash reservation. They can make adjustments to help keep the total system in balance. This has only happened once in the early days of OKW. The other thing that happened was putting in the standard vs. preferred system at BWV which made it possible to book for less. If possible, you could buy a little bit of cushion with your points but it's probably not necessary.

Points needed for cruises, non-DVC resorts, etc. can fluctuate up and down.

Being the same every day of the week is not an option. It would allow Floridian DVC owners to stay for weekends and long weekends. This would make it very difficult to get full week or more vacations.

but I think that the DVC knew exactly what they were doing in making it more painful to stay on Fr and Sa nights. And anything that they would do to the point totals would be minimal. We have only 150 points (it was all we wanted, not a big fan of getting whacked with big maintenance fee every year) and we are able to navigate the point system quite well. We do stay in studios most of the time. But we always stay at least on weekend night. We are staying 9 nights in October and it is only costing 111 points. You have a good grasp of the facts and I suppose you will just have to decide if the chance of a slight shift in the points will cause you a big problem. Just remember no one knows for sure if anything will be done. The system at OKW has worked pretty well for darn near 10 years.

The DVC points have had only one change at OKW and a small change at BWV when they created preferred vs standard views.

Here's a chart I created earlier in answer to a similar question. This shows the only point change ever made at OKW and that was going from 1995 to 1996. The chart below shows the changes that were made. A "+" indicates points per night were increased that amount. A "-" indicates points were decreased.

Example: In Adventure Season, a Studio Sun-Thurs went from 7 points/night to 8 points/night = +1.

In Premiere Season, a Grand Villa on Fri/Sat went from 170 points/night to 162 points/night = -8.
