My sister wore her contacts on the plane. And fell a sleep. When she woke up she was rubbing her eyes and it was so dry on the plane. She scratched her cornia an ended up at urgent care 2 days later cause she could not see and was in so much pain.

The doctor said it was from the dryness in the plane and falling asleep. She could barely see out her eye and had to wear a patch for 2 days.

Just an FYI!

My husband wears his contacts every time he flies. He doesn't sleep with them on. Two different issues.

You should always becareful about your eyes and sleeping with contacts, not just on the plane. However, I wear contacts, very very nearsighted if I don't and have fallen asleep on the plane before and have been just fine. I don't rub my eyes ever, and use drops often so that may have helped me. Not saying it's a safe thing to do or not to do, but just sharing my experiences. Just my $.02 - Always check with your eye doc, they know best. Thanks for the warning though. Reminds me to put drops on my packing list even though it's not until June. :)

Cheers.

I wear Acuvues and fly every two weeks, usually 5+ hours each time. I sleep on 99% of my flights.

Never had problems except a few weeks ago when I lost a contact lens at baggage claim due to dry eyes. Didn't bother to look for it. had a recent eye exam and no problems there.

I know it's a risk, but my glasses get all smeary when I sleep so I find it's a better option.

When I had gas permeable lenses, it was not an option to sleep with them - I could barely close my eyes when wearing them. But thanks for the heads up - it's important for people to remember to think about this.

Oh my, glad I read this. My contacts dry my eyes out when I go to the grocery store or Target.

I can sympathize. I have had a scratch on my cornea and it is very painful. I'm not sure how it happened but it could have been from rubbing my eyes with my contacts in. You have to be careful and it is just an automatic reaction to rub your eyes.
Thanks for the warning!! :sunny:
