Things to do/see in Houston TX area?

I travel for work and if I ever go anywhere interesting in the summer I will try to bring the family with for a visit, maybe stay over the weekend. The assignment I planned to bring them with for in August got moved to Sept, after schools starts, and instead I'll spend most of August near Houston TX. So I asked them (DH, DS age 10) if they want to come for a week - I'd stay over a weekend, and right now they are leaning towards not doing it.

They think it'll be too hot and not enough stuff to keep them interested.

DS hesitates because we did have a 3 week vacation already this summer, and he is enjoying being back at home.

Anyway, I thought I would see if anyone had some good suggestions of things for them to do/see in the area to see if I can talk them into it. I thought we could go down to the beach in Galveston over the weekend.

I'd try the Johnson Space Center. http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/ and http://www.spacecenter.org/

Also near the Space Center is the Kemah Boardwalk- a fun little area with restaurants, shopping and such : http://www.kemahboardwalk.com/

The month of August is in my opinion the worst time to visit all of Texas. Houston is particularly bad because of the high humidity. We used to live there and we tried to do as little as possible during that time.

Galveston is more pleasant but the beach isn't all that nice and awfully crowded on the weekends. There are some nice things to see and do in Galveston but again there is the problem of the heat.

Have you thought of a weekend in San Antonio? It's an easy drive and there's a lot more to do. Of course, there's still the oppressive heat.

Moody Gardens in Galveston plus the airplane museum (don't know its name) are nice to explore.

Also, the science museum is good.

There's Astroworld and a water park near by (I think).

There's actually two waterparks. One is the Six Flags version which is right next to Six Flags Astroworld and then there's Splashtown to the north. I like Splashtown mostly because it's nice and close to Old Town Spring, one of my favorite places to hang out and shop.

Your DH & DS would probably enjoy visiting the Astrodome/Reliant Stadium, the Toyota Center, and Minute Maid Park (maybe even catch an Astro's game).

I would visit Moody Gardens and the Space Center. Personally I don't like Houston. I have family there so I do go at least once a year.

It is hot in Houston in Aug but not impossible to have fun. Splash Town waterpark is fun and great way to stay cool.
The Kemah Boardwalk is fun. Great restaurants and they have some rides there as well. Also a fountain area where the kids and get wet and cool off. Moody Garden is another favorite.
My kids also enjoy going to the Space Center. There is also a Kids Museum close to downtown.
And we have plenty of great places to shop!
