We're thinking about going when school gets out - just for a couple of days. Anybody ever been? Things to do?

TIA!

Well since I live about an hour and a half from seaside guess I'll chime in. This is a cute little tourist trap town. The beach is fairly flat, on windy days you will see lots of kites being flown. Lots of beach stores with the usuall beachy knick knacks. There is an arcade that of course draws all the kids in. The most fun though is renting the surry bikes and riding around town or even better the beach trikes and riding out on the sand. There is a swingset on the beach as well as volleyball nets and restrooms. Traffic can become pretty congested as it is a short drive from Portland so nice summer weekends get crowded. To be honest it is not my favorite place to go. I prefer going to Pacific City, there are tide pools as well as a huge sand dune that keeps the kids busy for hours, the downside to this is you do need to watch and make sure you are not sitting in a "traffic lane" as cars are allowed on the beach esp during the time when the dory boats are coming or going (and it is cool to watch these boats take off into or out of the water and come right up on the sand). My other favorite spot is really close to Seaside and that is fort stevens, LOTS of cool historic things to see and a great beach too! There is also a lake for fishing and great camping!!! Here you can drive on the beach as well (you can't at seaside) but the beach is so much bigger that it isn't a problem, most folks just drive on the beach and park. Be careful before driving out on the sand though you don't want to get stuck! Have fun!!!!! We have miles and miles of buetiful public beaches so finding the perfect spot won't be hard!!!!!

We LOVE the Oregon Coast!!!!

That said...the worst place to STAY on the coast would be Seaside as it's filled w/the old tickytacky type hotels (though most ARE on the beach).

Seaside does have a fun touristy trap feel about it and has the arcade, the shopping, the minigolf, the movie theater and the outlet "mall"...so nice to visit.

We really, really love CANNON BEACH...go see Haystack Rock when the tide is out and you can explore all around. Plus there are locals there w/info about the ecosystem, and some hands on exploratory stuff (you can't touch the ones in the tidepools). Plus Cannon Beach has nice eateries and a much prettier beach than Seaside.

Last time we were down, we rented a house in a little town just south of Cannon Beach...we got a beautiful house w/a hot tub, kitchen, laundry facilities and a block from the beach for far less than we ever paid for hotel rooms in Cannon Beach.

I grew up in Oregon and have only lived in wa for a few years so I still think of it as home. I second the above posters opinions about Seaside. It is a fun tourist trap type place that is good for an afternoon. Little kids might like the stores at Seaside but Cannon Beach or Lincoln CIty are my favorite towns on the coast.

Lincoln city hides glass fishing floats during the winter on the beach so there is a chance your family can find one. They hide the same amount as the year so this year 2006 were hidden.

Cannon beach tends not to be as busy. My family would rent a house for 1 week every summer and stay there. They are having a big sand castle compitition Sat june 17.

At both the kites are flying and since the beach in oregon is open to everyone you can walk and play as far as you can see.

If you have a little extra time and do not mind the driving you might think about the oregon dunes. YOu can ride sand carts, slide down the side of the dunes, kayak in the lake at honeyman park. It is a lot of fun and not the usual beach adventure.
