I am taking my 6 year old son to Disneyworld and Universal in August for the first time. We are stying at AKL. In addition to the usual rides, I would like to have him meet some characters such as his favorites, Sponge Bob, Jimmy Neutron, Tom & Jerry, Buzz Lightyear, Timon & Pumba, etc. I know from my experience 12 years ago that some characters do walk around and people take pictures with them. Are there some characters more difficult than others to find? I hear of breakfast with characters, etc. Where are they and how do I find them. Are there backstage meetings possible?

Also, what do you folks consider to be the top choices for rides, for kids? Thanks.

As for characters in the parks, Guest Relations should be able to help you when you enter the park, especially if you're looking for a specific character.

As for rides.... Buzz Lightyear Space Rangers was probably the most popular one for my kids, and since you specificially mentioned that one as a favorite character, I'd highly recommend it. It has Fastpass, too. It's not a ride, but all my kids loved the Mickey's Philharmagic, a 3-D movie in Fantasyland. Most of fantasyland and Spalsh Mountain were big hits. In Epcot, the kids loved Spaceship Earth and the Imagination ride (again and again and again). In ANimal Kingdom, the big hit was the Kali River rapid ride.. we did this in the rain, by the way, and there were no crowds.

I can't conmment on Universal, as I've never been.

Have fun!

If you haven't already, make sure you post on the Universal board, also. You'll get tons of advice.

As far as what rides to go on, it depends on your son. I have a 4yo and he will go on anything that he is tall enough for, including Splash MT, Tower or Terror, Test Track, etc. By his next visit he should be tall enough for Space Mt and Mission to Space. At Universal he likes Spiderman, Popeye raft ride, Jimmy Neutron, etc. Really, he likes anything and the faster the better. He's more leary of 3D type shows, but does tolerate them now. He cried when he wasn't tall enough to go on Dudley Do Right, the water flume ride at Universal.

How tall is your son? Is he a daredevil or more cautious? If you're not sure you can start out with the smaller rides and move up from there.
