Things people say wrong...a lot.

Yes, my personal favorite was Caryon (which I couldn't decide if it was pronounced Cary On or what) or if someone tried to name their daughter crayon and mispelled it!

And yes, I get called Kathy constantly!

Way too funny !

My name is Kristine and I grew up in Wisconsin. Growing up EVERYONE called me Kristin. I was like, there is an E on the end of my name! It is promounced Kris - Teen not Kris - Ten!!!!

I don't know if it is a midwest thing or what because I live in Minnesota now and have the same problem. How does this happen?

(we had a secret meeting, we do it just to upset you!!!)

hehehehhehehee

And why do native Missourians call their state "Miss-our-ah"? :confused3

Not all of us do! It's mainly the outstaters and elected officials, for whatever reason.

Kristine, I have the opposite, my legal name is Kristen, and I can't TELL ya how many times teachers, etc have called me Kris-Teen.

I get a lot of mispronunciation on my name too.

I get called Tracy, Trish (right after I've introduced myself as Tricia, they'll say 'good to meet you Trish'), Tricky-a, and my favorite, and I get it a lot.

TREE-she-a :lmao:

One of the ones that drives me crazy is the pronunciation of the Cincinnati Bengals and they say Bangles! I just can't stand it! Thank goodness, finally, somewhere to vent about that one.

Ok, here's one I've been wondering about...

When I first moved down here to Kentucky, I noticed my friend was saying "srimp" instead of shrimp. At first I thought she just had a problem saying it, but then I heard more people down here say it. So, is it a southern thing or do just a lot of people here have a problem saying shrimp?

Imagine having the name Michelle and your teachers call you Melissa.

One that really drives me insaine is when someone is trying to say "that way" and they say "that away" instead. I'm always like :confused3 The other day my husband did that and I was like what the heck are you trying to say!!??!!

Two things that happen frequently at the restaurant I work at:

First, I hate when people pronounce queso with the q-u sound like KWAY-SEW. It's pronounced CASE-SEW.

Then pretty much the same thing, people ask for things like the queso cheese and the frijoles beans. So you want the cheese cheese and the beans beans. Drives me CRAZY!!!!

I don't know that it's southern, but I will tell you that some people here say "Skrimps" instead of shrimp. As in, let's go out to the Mayflower and get all you can eat skrimps. Always reminds me of that character Wanda that Jamie Foxx used to play on In Living Color.

The mention of gelato earlier in the thread reminded me, being the daughter of an Italian immigrant, the misuse of certain Italian words really bugs me. The worst is cannoli. That's the plural. Singular is cannolo. There is no such thing as cannolis. If you want to use the English "s" to make the dessert plural, it would be cannolos, and that I could handle, because it would be the proper way to pluralize something in English, but it bugs the heck out of me how many people will call one dessert a "cannoli" or say they're going to get some "cannolis". :confused3

"Gon DOUGH la" is another that makes me shudder, as is "Eye-talian". You don't say "Eye-taly", do you? :rolleyes1

Oh, and another is when people say "for all intensive purposes". The saying is "for all intents and purposes". :teacher:

My husband does that! It drives me loopy!

My dad says SimUlar instead of similar.

I can't stand when people don't know the difference between the word Advice and the word advise. They are not interchangeable!

As for Reese's, I always thought it was just a southern thing to call it Reesee's. I;ve hears southerners call it that my entire life as I am southern, but I've never heard any of my non-southern friends call it a Reesee's.:confused3

I see that a lot of the DIS. It makes me cringe every time.

Something my kids have picked up since moving to OK - "DONE." Look what I done! Do you know what she done?

The new rule/game is every time we catch them saying that, they get a flick on the nose! (no hard, but it works! they laugh and tell us to do it when they catch themselves now)

Funny, I worked with a lady names Kirsten (kursten) and people kept calling her keerstin and it bugged her, but she never said anything. It bugged me more than it bugged her, I think... and it turns out that Kirsten wasn't even her real name. It was Gail! Kirsten is the name she gave herself for religious purposes. lol

My name is Melissa and I get called Michelle all the time!!!! What's up with that? The two do not sound a like at all!!

My daughter's name is Marie and she is called Maria all the time. My friend's daughter is named Maria and people always cal her Marie-go figure.
