Things people say wrong...a lot.

One of the families in my church when I was a child was named Reese and they pronounced their name Reesee too. Over time, pronunciations do tend to change. Most people don't pronounce "Roosevelt" correctly anymore, saying "rose-a-velt" instead, but I bet back in FDR's day most people pronounced it "ruse-a-velt."

In his Inaugural address, FDR pronounces his name Rose-a vult:

It's at about 1:27.

Acme = ak-a-me

Fire = faar

Wire = waar

And, the ever popular you-bet-cha (is that even a word?)

Love this!
We torment my best friend a bit because she says oinge for orange and romaine for ramen, but those expressions are just funny to me, not annoying.

OH, some MDers botch this one, too. Instead of orange, it's ARE-EENGE.

Listen, you all can say Reese's however you want, it truely does not bother me. But I am telling you, if you come to Hershey, Pa and someone hears you say Reese's like the name and not Ree-sees- they will try and correct you.

We all may be saying it wrong- according to the phonetics and general population on this thread- but it is how we say it. An yes, we all do say Pee-sees too. And yes, we also say Ree-see sticks.

And as a plug to our newest product- run out and try the new Ree-see's Cremes! They have a creamy peanut butter center enrobed in milk chocolate. Little squares of heaven I tell you!!

...must be a 'Pennsylvania thing'.....;)....my friend in Lancaster says that, while everyone else says "LAN-CAST-uhr", they pronounce it "LAN-custuhr"....:confused3

This reminds me of the monthy python bit.

"Its spelled: "mango throat wolbler" but pronunced "olay fertang fertang bisquet barrell"

you are ALL right, and you are also wrong.

If someone is taught in the region where they live, by the parents, teacher, and use in conversation that a word is pronunced a certain way, to them that IS the correct way.

I have travelled quit a bit around the United States, and into a lot of different countries. When speaking english with others, especially non-native speakers, it IS amusing to listen to the way some were taught to pronunce some english words.

most unusual: speaking english in Hong Kong with a chinese interpreter who spoke with a decidely english accent, with a bit of American southern drawl!

donne axe me to splain cuz i prolly donne no.

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: Thanks so much to all of you for this very amusing thread! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 The one thing that REALLY makes me cringe is when people say "got" instead of "have" or another proper verb.:headache: I 've got to go to the store - should be- I need to go to the store. I got a toy - should be I bought or I was given or I received a toy!

MAKES ME CRAZY!!!! :flower3:

When you have too much of something, do you have it "up the wazoo" or "out the wazoo"? :confused3 Do they mean the same thing? Are there subtle differences?:confused:

...one is sitting and the other is while standing...

Hate it when dh says pin instead of pen. He also says pinny instead of penny. Hate it!

My Grandma says Wallmark like others have already mentioned, but she also says Perk Plus(her favorite shampoo:scared:) instead of Pert Plus.

My Dad says Coumadint for his medicine insead of Coumadin.

I love Rees-sees and just saw those new candies today, but I resisted temptation-for now!

XFil used to say "Valentime's" and pronounce "Benjamin" as "Ben-german." That makes me cringe. Where is the "r"? Tell me!

My husband pronounces "greasy" with a Z. As in, "That burger was greezy." There's no Z in that word!

I haven't read this whole thread, so apologies if it's already been mentioned.

When typing, it's not "could of" or "would of," it's "could've" and "would've." I see why people would think that, because thats how it SOUNDS, but that's because it's short for "could HAVE" or "WOULD HAVE!!!!"

Sorry, rant over :). I feel better now.

Yes, but you reach a point where the family name matters less than the "generally accepted" pronunciation.

Yes, that explains why everyone not from Pittsburgh pronounces Carnegie wrong. Around here, it's car-NAY-gie, and the college is car-NAY-gie Mellon.

There are lots of words that Pittsburghers put the emphasis in a different place than the rest of the country - UM-brella comes to mind.

When I want to upset my daughter, I say crick instead of creek.

Ooo! I just remembered one that had us scratching our heads for a few days!

We visited family on the gulf coast in Texas. My aunt was saying that later we would be having 'bawled shrimp'. My other aunt and I asked each other what exactly that was that night but couldn't figure it out. The next day my Texas aunt said again 'bawled shrimp' and so we asked.

She said, "Bawled shrimp. You know, you Bawl it."

:idea:

Oooooooooh! BOILED SHRIMP!!!

We had been thinking hairless or in little balls.
When I was pregnant with DD, we lived in Louisiana. At one appointment the nurse drew some blood and said, "We're going to test your arn." I had to ask her to repeat herself THREE TIMES before I figured out she was saying "iron." :rotfl:

DH is a Southerner and he says "toelet" for "toilet" and "ole" for "oil" among other things. Oh yeah, and "Loosiana" for "Louisiana."

I sure am glad I have been saying that correctly all of my life. I certainly would not want to visit Hershey, PA and have to be corrected. LOL.

I have to tell you OP that I read this thread last night and laughed until I cried.

Thanks!

When people say "Melk" for the word Milk. Seems to be common here in Wisconsin. My dad says it like that. There's no E in milk!

I've never pronounced it like Ree-See's.... the commericials never say it like that so I just say it how the commercials do: Ree- Says. As for the one that aired in the 70's that did say REEEE SEEEES- I wasn't born yet!

Here is my contribution.

There is no "X" in espresso. Being from the Seattle area I hear this quite often. It is not expresso. :rolleyes:

And I do not live in WaRshington, nor do I waRsh my clothing.

My MIL is notorious for using the term lah-TAY (latte) with emphasis on the TAY. Just doesnt sound right.

Breaf-kist (breakfast)
Beb-droom (bedroom)

My all time favorite is when ds-2 refers to watermelon as "watermuffin" or "waterpunkin". :cutie:
