Hi! We are traveling to the world in Jan/Feb and I've read a few posts at some point about the best warm coats that aren't super huge and puffy. Something about 800 fill down jackets, but can't find the posts. Any advise?

There's a line of Dockers jackets lined with Thinsulate that are barely thicker than a sweater...

I live in Ma which can get pretty cod and I have an omniheat jacket from Columbia and it's amazing. My favorite coat ever. It's very thin and very warm. It would be good for mornings and evenings but would probably be too warm for during the day unless it was really cold.

We've been in January twice before. The first time, we wore layers with cotton hoodies (think Hollister, American Eagle), we were quite chilly until around noon. I heard later that fleece, like Old Navy Performance Fleece, was better because it holds in heat, and doesn't absorb the dampness of morning air. The next time we went, that's what we wore. They were correct! Much warmer with a long sleeve tee on underneath. I am NOT a fan of cooler temps, and was skeptical, but I was fine! I think the low was about 45 degrees so it was probably 50ish in the mornings at the park. By the afternoon it had warmed to around 70, so we ended up tying them around our waists so not to have to get a locker.

I love my LL Bean packaway jacket. It's very light weight, warm and packs away easily when you don't need it.

Both my daughter and I have the PrimaLoft Packaway jacket from LL Bean and love it. It's extremely lightweight and packs away in its own pocket. At first I didn't think it would really keep us as warm as the rating says which is -15 degrees but we've worn it with a light sweater when it was 25 degrees and so far so good. Here's the link to the jacket:

Thanks mommyrosa2 and Oomiak for posting. I'm a big LL Bean fan, and am going to the World in mid January. I'm buying a pink Packaway jacket right now - looks great!

I went feb 1st to the 6th and other then the last day it was 70's I never felt a little cold.

We will be there from jan 30th to feb 6th 2015 and I plan to wear a light northface and that should be enough.

Under Armour X-Storm are great for the earlt morning and evenings. Most the time you won't need a jacket in the afternoon (long sleve shirt maybe).

We'll be there the same week!

We've been at this time of year before and the weather is really hit or miss. We've found that the best thing for us to bring is a 3-in-1 jacket. Columbia and North face make some nice ones. You can wear the lining (fleece jacket), the outer jacket (like a rain jacket/windbreaker) or both together to make a winter parka. They are very versatile and really do keep you warm!

For example - in 2010, when we arrived, it was snowing and we all had both layers on. As the week went on, highs were in the low 70's and we only needed the outer jacket in mornings or evenings.

Also, don't forget hats, scarves, and gloves!

Examples of this coat would be Columbia's Bugaboo (DH has had his for maybe 8 years now?), or North Face's Boundary (women's - this is what I have, and I LOVE the moss fleece liner!)

Ditto. Wearing mine right now. Seems to warm you to just warm enough, no matter what the temp. Also very water resistant. And super packable. DH surprised me last Xmas and he did GREAT!!

loads of folks wear the polartec, orginated in Lawrence mass, by the way, and sweatshirts. between 10 and 4 is nice, but then it can cool down. sometimes it is above 80. I usually have had the 60 end.

but, no sweating. :goodvibes

I got my packable down jacket from Costco this year - just $50 :) Rolls up into small bag. Warm until around the low 30s. Any colder and I add a good quality fleece at which point I should be good no matter what weather.

Sounds like a plan.

What works best for us is lightweight layers. We usually start out with a long sleeve cotton T, then layer a quarter zip fleece over that. On top of that goes a lightweight windbreaker type jacket.

In FL, a lot of the uncomfortable cold feeling is due to the high humidity. As long as you can keep the damp breeze from chilling you, you don't necessarily need anything heavy. We found that a wind and waterproof layer on top of a lightweight fleece layer is the key to staying warm. Plus, you can peel off/add on layers as the day progresses.

A fleece hat and gloves are also great to have on hand for after dark and super cold days. If your head stays warm, you feel warmer all over.

I have a NorthFace Oso hoodie jacket and I love it. I hate bulky coats and this keeps me perfectly comfortable without being heavy,

A Uniqlo store recently opened near us. I bought my DD one of their packable down jackets. I got it on sale for $39. Regular price is $69. DD loves the jacket & says it's really warm.

We have gone the first week of Feb the last 3 yrs and I wore capris pants with tennis shoes, 3/4 sleeve shirts. I wore a fleece pullover in the morning till around 10;30 then took it off for the day but put it back on after dark.

I didn't take a jacket with me to the park but one day it rained in the evening and I was pretty miserable after I got caught in it. Thankfully we were I n our way to the buses to leave. And I was happy for the super packed bus cause it kept me warm.

Yeah, I guess I should look for wind resistant, but light.

I was at a UNIQLO yesterday and saw those. Maybe I'll try that.

When we went last Feb we did have two nice days, but the other two were COLD and RAINY, which was so awful. I only had one pair of jeans and one sweatshirt, nothing warmer or rainproof. Hoping for better weather and trying to be a little more prepared.
.
Surprisingly the raincoats we bought the kids from the Disney store not too long ago are actually really warm. They are fleece lined (and Frozen and Jake) and they may do the trick too!

Thanks everyone, the hunt is on!
