Congratulations on finishing your first 5K. It is awesome that you were able to run the entire race without walking. Many people make the mistake of running too fast and end up walking towards the end. I've had some really low placements, too. The worst was the half marathon I did in Allenton, PA. I am not used to hills, we don't have them where I live, and I ended up being one of the last people to finish. But I still had fun. I must admit that I'm surprised they didn't have race bibs. I've kept everyone of mine and recorded the race results info on the back. But I haven't done a race in a few years so maybe they are eliminating them. :confused3

It was really nice of your family to come watch you race. My youngest daughter would run some of the races with my sister and I, but my husband never came to my races. :sad1:

That's so flipping COOL!!!
Love your little town! ive already told you Congrats... So i will say again CONGRATS!

Love the boys or should i say book ends!!

Congratulations on finishing your first race!! You did a great job! :) Keep up the awesome work!

I will have to find the running stuff on pinterest. The weather has gotten cooler so I think now might be a good time to start up.
Congrats on your first race and for doing such a great job! Congratulations to Allison as well!:yay:

Congratulations to Allison!

WOW D! You did an incredible job! 45 minutes for you first 5K and you've been training for what about 2 weeks? When I did the 1/2 marathon at Disney there were all sorts of folks cheering on all along the course-many with signs for friends & family and many with just generic "you go" type signs. My favorite sign was the one that said "I'm more impressed by the last 100 runners than the first 100." I was certainly one of the last.

No medals for the finishers? The Disney races are all about the bling!:D Of course with the Disney races you pay for that bling in registration fees.

Looks like you had a fun day in Northfield. I'm sure my niece & family were there.

I knew my pace was the best it's ever been,

Here's a great time to say "I told you so!". I knew you would have a faster time. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing--running is not a team sport! It's all about you. Think about how long (not very) that you've been running and you've already done a 5K! Congratulations!!!

I'm having a rough time getting motivated. I had major surgery in February. Last run I did was the color run (which is more about fun than run) last September. I'm walking, but have gained weight due to all the issues before surgery (not being able to exercise was one of them). But I'm trying to be good and get back into a routine. I know I'll be happier when I do that. You are inspiring me!

As it turned out, the whole family was there! It made me so happy that they woke at O'dark-thirty to come and see me run... It meant the world - truly it did!

You're lucky to have such a great family!

Pinterest was my bff for several weeks - still go there often - to read and educate myself on "beginner running".

Heh. I'm pretty much glued to certain headings. Like Running, Run Disney, Running Quotes...then there's Desserts and Nails. :D

I was kind of sad when I got back to the car, and opened the envelope - there wasn't a bib, only a chip.

Boo. What's up with that?

I ran the entire race, start to finish, never once stopping or walking.

:yay::yay::yay:

I complimented her on her pace as I was passing her (not sure if she thought I was insulting her?), because as we were going through the finish area, she zoomed past me at a stomping run, and she said "look who's running now!" lol.

That is too funny! You gave her some motivation, lol.

So, I am a bit sad that I am truly the slowest runner out there... but I keep telling myself that if I am truly the slowest - then I've left room for improvement, and I can only go up from here.

il_fullxfull-258060177 (640x512).jpg

I am happy with my time, because I obliterated my average pace PR by over 1.5 minutes - that is incredible! :woohoo:

That's amazing! Race day adrenaline took over! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 You did such a fantastic job, congratulations!

Just read your race update and wanted to say congrats to you! I'm sure it felt great to finish your first 5K and I wish you luck on your next one! I lurk here about once a week these days. I don't post a ton since I don't have any Disney park trips in the works anytime soon, which makes me sad. We are doing a Disney Cruise trip next month though, so maybe I'll post a quick blurb about it when I return.

Thank you so much! It was just a great experience!

I am glad you stopped by to say hello - I often wonder about you and how you are doing. :thumbsup2 Bummer that you don't have any Disney trips coming up (I am sure that will change... :scratchin) But a cruise would be awesome! Something I still want to do some day!

Congratulations D!!! You should be so proud of yourself. Is that a Spibelt that you use? I use one for running and I just love it. Congrats to Allison for making yearbook editor.

Thanks Niki!!!

Yes, It's a Spibelt - I love it too!!! I just use it to carry my phone - but I can fit so much more in there... The only thing I don't like about it, is if I try to take my phone out and I have other stuff in there - everything else comes with it. So, I've taken to not carrying anything in there but my phone. ::yes::

Yes - I am super proud of her! Thank you!

Thank you!!! It was a lot of fun!

I noticed that too - most of the people I passed were during the last mile... I just kept my same pace the entire time... I did start out a little fast, but once I glanced down at my Garmin, I slowed down - I was still faster than my normal pace, but it felt OK.

I was really bummed not to have a race bib, I was surprised too. Oh well - at least it was chipped, so that was nice.

Yes, I was so happy that they all came - it made me feel pretty special! ::yes::

That's so flipping COOL!!!
Love your little town! ive already told you Congrats... So i will say again CONGRATS!

Love the boys or should i say book ends!!

Thanks Mo!!!

Hehehe... They are trouble-makers for sure!

Congrats on your first 5K!!

Thank you so much!

Congratulations on your first race! I hope you get to do a Disney one.

Thanks Ariana!!! Me too... I've already decided that my very first half ever will be a Disney race! Until then, I'll just keep working towards that goal.

Congratulations on finishing your first race!! You did a great job! Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks so much! :)

Congratulations on your 5K! Awesome! And congrats to Allison on being the yearbook editor! That's fabulous!

Thanks! It was an amazing experience!

And thank you - I am so proud of her!

I will have to find the running stuff on pinterest. The weather has gotten cooler so I think now might be a good time to start up.
Congrats on your first race and for doing such a great job! Congratulations to Allison as well!

Yes you will - I can sit on Pinterest for hours researching running. LOL

It's definitely much nicer to run now than it was during the summer... It's still pretty warm and humid here during the day.

And thank you - I am so proud of her!

Congratulations to Allison!

Thanks! I am very proud of her! It's such an honor to be Yearbook editor - here anyways.

LOL, well, it's been a little more than 2 weeks. I started mid-July... So about 2 months.... but still - not very long. ::yes::

That is awesome you did a half marathon in Disney - which one and when? So proud of you - I did not know that (or I missed it if you posted before).

Nope - no medals... We all got Tee shirts though. I didn't take a picture of that. I probably should have. I will - after I wash it - I accidentally spilled some of my gyro on it at Jesse James Days. LOL

I wondered if they were - I assumed they were, since they live there. I think of you every time we go there. :lovestruc

Hahaha... thanks! LOL You are right - and I did keep thinking that to myself... This is MY race. Yes... but in my brain - I think of it as *only a 5k* and I need to stop thinking that. I was talking to some co-workers yesterday and my race came up, they were all so impressed... So, I really need to be more proud of myself - it IS an accomplishment.

Awww... That is such a bummer! I sure hope you are able to recover fully soon... Just get back into it slowly and carefully - you don't want to reinjure yourself! But I know you can do it, as long as your Dr. gives the OK - of course. :thumbsup2

Please keep me updated on your progress! I'll cheer you on for sure! :woohoo:

You're lucky to have such a great family!

Thanks! I do love them!

Hehehe... Yes, I am such a Pinterest addict - I love it.

I know - I was quite disappointed!

I am not sure what I gave her? She honestly seemed kind of upset about it... I really think she mis-understood me?

It was sooo cool - I cannot wait for my next one... Stay tuned... ::yes::

****************************************************************************************

So...

Yesterday was a Target day... Sigh. At least we are coming in to our busy time = my favorite time to work at Target. ::yes::

While at huddle yesterday, one of my LODs mentioned that Target was a corporate sponsor of the St. Jude's End Childhood Cancer walk/run this weekend. Oh really? So... I immediately came home last night and signed myself up to run... It's on Saturday. I am looking forward to supporting and running for an amazing cause! It should be a lot of fun - I just wish I would have known about it sooner. When I first started running - I didn't even THINK of this aspect of it... How cool! I am really excited to be a part of this! :woohoo:

Then I came home and I made dinner...

And I sat at the computer all night long... I had some business stuff to attend to - which took me hours to sift through. :scratchin

That's all... Oh - I went upstairs and started watching the documentary on Walt... That was cool. I started to fall asleep about 30 min into it though, so I am glad I recorded it. ::yes::

Today... It's a heavy lifting day for me.

Then I will be working upstairs all day long.

I will also run tonight. Question to my runner friends... I am thinking of adding a little bit of hill/speed work into my routine... Maybe once a week? I already run 3x per week, so I am assuming I would do this on one of my off run days? Could someone fill me in on what's best for this? Thanks a million! I am not looking to be overly dramatic... but I would like to start working on a better pace. :thumbsup2

Otherwise - that's all. Nothing else exciting today. :)

I hope you all have a wonderful day! Prayers and good thoughts go out to everyone! :grouphug:

You need to find a local runner's website that will list those races. There are a million of them in the fall. It seems to be the most popular time for races. We had CARA - Chicago Area Runners Assn for race information. Next time you are at a race look to see if there are any running clubs that are listed as sponsors or organizers. They might have a website that lists the locals races. They want runners as much as runners want races, so they tend to try to advertise their races with the running groups.

I used to run a hill route once a week when I was training for a half marathon. I had to drive to a different town since hills are hard to find here. I would plan the hill run for a Saturday. I didn't run an extra day. I just kept my normal three days a week.

As far as speed goes, you can just run faster for short bursts, like maybe a block or two, during your run. but honestly, I never worried a whole lot about speed. The funny thing was that once I started to increase my distance when training for the half marathon, then my speed at a 5K increased automatically. My fastest 5K time was at my first 5K race after I had done a half marathon. (I only ran 2 half marathons, the first one was at Disney, and two was enough for me.

I used to be a member of the Runner's World forums. It was my first forums and like the Dis, we would ask each other for advice. I made some friends on that forum and even traveled to Allentown,PA to meet them for the half marathon. So meeting internet strangers is nothing new to me.

Boy - I sure look like I am walking in many of these. So for you runners - can you see any big mistakes with my posture or anything like that?

Loved seeing all the pictures!

Don't forget that the documentary is two parts, the second one is on tonight. I didn't even try to stay up, just recorded it. I will probably try to find some time this weekend to watch it.

Have a great day!

Uh oh, now you are a runner--second race sign-up already! Way to go!

I *think* I'm allowed to post this link. If not let me know and I'll delete it (unless moderators do it first)? On one of my FB groups they have posted this link to a virtual race for October:
http://www.wdwradio.com/2015/08/joi...m-for-a-tomorrowland-virtual-race-in-october/

This would be fun to do!!! I have no relationship with that page if anyone cares! ;)

I fall into this as well. I don't give myself enough credit because I still feel I'm too slow or it's 'only' part of my training. It's hard for me to appreciate and savor the milestones along the way. Sounds like we both need to work on this!

The plan that I'm using has hill workouts once a week where you focus on running strong on either the uphills or the downhills. I just got back from doing the same hill 5 or 6 times so I am dripping, lol. Tomorrow is speed work where I'll run strong for 4 min, jog for 3; repeat 4 times. There are a lot of super knowledgeable runners in the W.I.S.H. area of the forums who are very helpful with questions.

Hi D! I am slowly making my way back onto the boards, and wanted to check in. It was nice doing a little chatting with you last night! I am still so excited!

I have been following your running on FB. Great job on the 5K and good luck on your next one too! I haven't done one in forever but I would love to get back into it!

I hope to be here more in the coming weeks!

I will definitely look.. I've found a few websites that list several races... Some of them are so small though - I am not sure I want to run them? I dunno?

That is good to know... Sometimes it's a little tricky planning this stuff. I feel like, with my other work outs, I just need to be careful that I don't overwork myself. My run yesterday was terrible! It was soooo HOT and soooo WINDY - I got home and my skin was just burning from the wind... And I couldn't even run my whole 2 miles - I had to stop at that last hill and walk, I was just too hot.

Thanks Sue... I will try that. I have a hill across from my house - it's about a block long, then it wraps around to meet up with itself... So I think I could run up the hill and walk the block around and keep going a few times - I think it might work nicely. I also have a hill next to my house I could use - but it's a bit longer... I may wait around to try that one for a while? You are welcome to come and use my hills any time you'd like... ::yes::

That's awesome! I have several Dis friends that are runners, who I turn to for lots of questions... They are really great - some of them I've met several times and others I plan on meeting soon... I love my Dis friends. I don't belong to any running forums yet... :scratchin But I do lurk around the WISH section here. ::yes::

I fell asleep to Walt again last night... I might finish it tonight. LOL Then I recorded the show on the Muppets too... That one should be interesting. Now if they will just play the Disney Parks series again - my family thinks it's funny that they keep deleting them - yet I watch them over and over, esp during the night, if I can't fall asleep. Grrr... So someone deleted them again... Meanies.

Loved seeing all the pictures!

Don't forget that the documentary is two parts, the second one is on tonight. I didn't even try to stay up, just recorded it. I will probably try to find some time this weekend to watch it.

Have a great day!

Thanks! I think I look huge in them... but oh well.

Yup - I have both of them recorded, along with the show about Jim Hensen. ::yes::

Thanks - you too!

OK... So, I have a good hill across the street from my house and it curves around to meet back up with itself... Essentially - I'd just keep walking around the block and run up the hill portion. I am sure my neighbors will think I have gone mad - small town after all... but I think this hill will be perfect. Maybe tonight if it isn't too hot out?

I've been lurking over there quite a bit. ::yes:: I love the Dis!

Thanks - It's been a process and I am sure that people are sick of hearing about it - but oh well. LOL I hope you do get back into it - it's so much fun!!!

I hope you are here more too - I've missed you!!!!

COOL BEANS!!! WAY TO GO!

Thanks my love!!!! :lovestruc

***************************************************************************************

OK... So, yesterday I lifted.

Then I worked all day.

Then I ran... It was a BAD, bad, bad run.... The whole entire thing was just a struggle. First I was bucking a really harsh wind... Then when I turned around to come back home - the wind wasn't there to cool me down and it was downright awful hot out there. I forgot to start my timer until I was actually running... And I had to stop running early, because I was just too hot to go any further - and that last hill is killer. So, that's my excuse. By the time I got home, my skin was just burning from the wind. ::yes:: But, at least I got out there. :thumbsup2

Last night... Suzi sent me another resort hint... Now shhhhh.... No body tell me if they know - K?

I love her!

Today... I am working out this morning and then it's straight up to work for me... I have a LOT to get done today.

Victoria has an appt. this afternoon, so I am picking her up from school and headed over there.

I hope you all have a fantastic day! Prayers and good thoughts go out to all of you! :grouphug:

Yes! I worry you'll overtrain and injure yourself. Rest days are so important!

I really need to be nicer to myself and enjoy the process too... Let's try. ::yes::

I will try. I have a 10K coming up in early October where I can practice this. I've been feeling grumpy during these early races since I'm not at the place I want to be yet. But why not enjoy the journey to getting to that place? It's just hard for me. :confused3

It was a BAD, bad, bad run.... The whole entire thing was just a struggle.

Great job on getting out there!
