I just finished mowing my yard. I was not thrilled to see about six sets of lovebugs. True, there were only a few, but the others can't be far behind.

They seem to be a bit early this year. Perhaps, it is because we've had some very warm weather already this year. It is supposed to be much cooler next week, so that could delay them a bit.

For those of you planning to visit Orlando in the next few weeks, be prepared for our little friends.

Thanks for posting, Peg...

Once you start seeing the lovebugs, how long do they stick around? We're going May 10-17 and have been expecting bugs for our trip...but will they be starting to 'slow down' by then, or will they be in full force?

Thanks for the info!

Once they start showing up, they are usually here for a month to a month and a half. I'd predict they will be with us until about the end of May.

Believe me, I'd rather they not be here. I will soon be making several trips to Tallahassee and back. Nothing like cleaning lovebug glue from your windshield every hundred miles!

We encountered them in masses in September two years ago... Are they super early this year or will they be back?!?

.

Florida has also had more rain this year than last. That also has an affect on them. Last year Florida and south Georgia was dealing with fires in late April and early May due to the drought.

There are a ton at our timeshare at Orange Lake in mid July - it's so irritating. I never have problem w/them in the parks though in July, just by the pool and outside by the hotel.

I've never had any major issues with lovebugs...my problem are the Golden Raintree bugs...I can't get rid of them! At least they don't fly...they just wander.

So does there presence dwindle as time goes on. Meaning, from the time they first show up, what's their cycle like?

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

Dangit, they are just icky little bugs that smear when you even gently try to brush them away. I don't want to have to deal with that next week!

I am so sick in my love for Disney (and therefore Florida) that I love these little pests :goodvibes . I am jealous of those or you who have to deal with these troublemakers - because you get to live close to Disney. Not an inch of sympathy from me no sirree!

We are also going May 10-17ish, but if they are just barely emerging, I'm guessing my week will fall right into their "flight" time.

Gross question, though...

if there are bunches of these in the air (link said hundreds of thousands), what happens on a ride like BTMRR? Do they splatter on your face, etc?

Trying not to get too grossed out...

I guess that's a fair trade off. ;)

Thank you. That link says "Flights extend over periods of 4 to 5 weeks." That's encouraging news for our May 12-18th vacation. Hopefully by the time we're there, they'll be almost gone. (crossing fingers and praying) ;)

Hate to break this to you but last year we made a trip from Atlanta to Miami around the 15th of May and the Love Bugs were horrible. We had to stop in Ocala coming back to wash the car as they were so bad. I doubt that they will be gone by then and really expect them to be in full swing around that time. Again, Florida has had a lot of rain this year compared to last year. They love water. I lived in Florida for 40 years. I remember when we didn't have Love Bugs.

Well, let's just put it this way. Keep your mouth closed on the ride! No, really. Some areas will be just thick with them. Other areas will have very few. It is really hard to say.

How are ya gonna scream and keep your mouth closed? :)

There's gonna be tons of pictures posted here of people riding BTMRR with hands clasped over their mouths so they can scream while they ride!
