They wouldn't register DS for school today (long frustrated)

I'm sorry you are frustrated. But as a school nurse, I see where the school is coming from. You have no idea what a fight it is to get shot records from people. So because some parents are so difficult, schools have to crack down on EVERYONE. And it sounds like they don't know you from Adam, so why would they trust you if you said, "But he is all up-to-date on his shots even if these papers don't show it". Did they give you a list of the shot requirements before you went in? What shot did they tell you he is missing?

The main question I have for you is. . . Was this an RN you talked to? If so, if she was a good school nurse she would have told you exactly what your child was missing, given you a letter saying what he was missing, and she would NOT have given you a hard time about having several papers with the shot records on them as long as they were properly documented (shot, date, clinic name, etc). If the district does not have RN's on their campuses, this is further proof of the benefits of having a professional nurse on school campuses.

His Dr told me last friday he was up-to-date. No they don't give a list before registration but I did find one today on the districts web site (the school has it's own website that doesn't have a list linked)

Here is the list
5 Doses DTP, DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) 5th Dose on or after 4th Birthday
OR 4 Doses with 4th Dose on or after 4th Birthday
4 Doses OPV, IPV (Polio) 4th Dose on or after 4th Birthday
OR 3 Doses with 3rd Dose on or after 4th Birthday
2 Doses Measles (1st Dose on or after 1st Birthday)
1 Dose Mumps on or after 1st Birthday
1 Dose Rubella on or after 1st Birthday
3 Doses Hepatitis B
2 Doses Hepatitis A (1st Dose on or after 2nd Birthday)
1 Dose Varicella (chickenpox) on or after 1st Birthday (if child has NOT had chickenpox)

No it wasn't an RN. It was just the office lady. I really just think that the records are hard to read and things are not at the right dates because of moving/finding a new Dr etc. He was late on a lot of things so I just think things were hard to find. I also think the problem could be the Hep B shot. He has 2 doses listed on our SC chart but TN doesn't require it so it isn't listed in the TN chart at all BUT he got it combo'd with the HIB 3 shot (think or maybe the DTaPH), which is listed in the TN chart (there is just no space for HEP shots at all on the TN chart). The biggested issue seems to be the way thing are listed.

For example in some states he got the DTaP and some he got the DTaPH. And in SC/TX it is listed as Varicella but in TN it is Varivax. I should have asked to see the nurse, that would have been smart. I was so upset that I didn't even think of it. I just wasn't expecting this at all since we saw the Dr on Friday.

ETA - I would have signed a waiver but they didn't even say that was an option. I kept asking 'what are my options to register him today?' and she told me you have none and we can't register him today unless you see the Dr and be back by noon. She could clearly see I was upset because when she talked to DH she mentioned that she was sorry she upset me so much. I was pratically in tears (which I know is an over reaction, PMS).

She did seem to convince DH that the capping wouldn't be an issue if we got him registered next week. She must have some idea of enrollment. I am still shocked that since the 05/06 school year was the 1st year this school is open that we are already expected to be capped for the 06/07 school year.

I am down the road from you OP! I know the area you are in.
We moved here this past summer. When I went to register my girls it was the worst nightmare of my life! They do not need to have a certain state form filled out( I have 2 of those-1 from AL and 1 from FL!) and a nice yellow one from the army! But there was a typo on one and they said her chicken pox vac was given too early! I did not want her to get another one since I knew that she had it at the correct time! I had to chase it down from 3 moves and a million drs ago. The typo had been made over and over again and had never been caught before!
My girls did have to get a shot to go to school here. It is not needed in most parts of the country. Can't recall which one it is ...2 doses needed though. I do know that. My girls are due this summer.

FWIW I would bite the bullet and send to private. I pulled my girls from what is a very food elementary school here. They hated it. Years behind other schools they have been in. I am homeschooling now and will send to private next year.

I am sorry you are going through this. It is not like this in other parts of the country.

The nurse at the school DID look over my records when I was there and told me exactly what was needed. I would ask to see her.

I remember when we moved to Tulsa in 1997. My dd was about to enter kindy and the state required a hepatitis shot. WA state didn't require one at the time and it was a headache to get her admitted. Ugh, paperwork and bureaucracy!

GL! :wizard:

.

Three thoughts:
A) she didnt think you would want the waiver since you believe in vax.
B)she didnt think about it since the issue was getting the proper proof, not a way around it).
C) the school districts hate the waiver thing, and dont encourage people to use it.

I would call and ask what you need to do for a waiver.

That's weird, we also had a form that came with the registration papers that the doctor had to fill out. Thank goodness because for the life of me I have no idea where I put DS's immunization book for safe-keeping.

I feel for you!! I registered DS for Kindergarden yesterday as well. He was missing one shot. The school nurse filled out a form, but let me register him. What gets me is the way the registration is run. I felt almost clasterphobic (sp). There were so many people there. No order at all. I had to bring all four of my DS. One fell down and was crying. As I was trying to get him to settle down, by telling him that he was OK--pretty much suck it up--A teacher or aide stops to tell me "well you ran over his finger with the stroller." Thanks lady that's what I needed to hear. BTW lady his finger is not hurt, it was his knee--that I did not run over--he tripped and re opened a scrape.

Explain to the superintendent that your DS is up to date and you are not asking for special consideration, just the same consideration that the illegal aliens get.

:confused3 Are you saying that illegal alien children that lack proper immunization records are allowed into you school district?
