They wouldn't register DS for school today (long frustrated)

I am so upset and frustrated. I went to register my DS for kindergarten (which is hard enough already) and they wouldn't accept his registration.

His immunizations records aren't correct. We've lived in 3 states so they are on 3 different sheets and since different areas have different requirements his aren't right. So I need to take him to the Dr on Monday and get it all straightened out. The Dr says he is up to date and doesn't understand what the school's problem is.

They won't even do a 'pending' registration.

I wouldn't be upset but here all the schools are capped. So if you don't get them in during pre-registration there is a good chance that they will have to be bussed elsewhere. Of course today was the last day of pre-registration. I know I waited until the last day but I had talked to the Dr and DS's preschool and thought everything was in order.

The woman was totally rude about it too. Which makes me mad because I pay nearly 7k in property taxes in addition to the bond to build the already capped new schools to have some office worker shove papers back in my face and tell me they can't help me. It isn't like they give you any direction anyway. I'm new to the area and never registered a kid for school before. It isn't like they put something in the paper or have 'how to' info on their website. I wouldn't have even known about any of it if it wasn't for DS's preschool.

And this is a can of worms but I'm frustrated that every illegal and migrant worker in the area gets their kids in school no problem. My neighbor bought a house here so their kids could go to the schools but no one lives in the house. It isn't even really furnished. The kids come up from Mexico and stay with people during the week days and go back and forth to Mexico when their entry expires and then come back a few days later. She told me all about how they do it. You think their shot records are all in order?

Anyway he has an appointment on Monday so the Dr can figure it all out.

Why don't you put a call into the Board of Ed? Explain the situation and your concerns and see if they can hold a spot pending your Drs appt. It's worth a try at least. Good luck.

That sucks!

Our school would never have done that to us. They would have insisted we get the records straightened out before school started, but they would never had turned us away. Of course we do not have the bussing or immigrations.

All I can say on the bright side, is if your son doesn't get into this school, considering how rude this person was, maybe it will be a blessing in disguise if he has to go to another school.

This does actually happen to some families and I think it's wrong. Considering that possibility, I would call the Superintendent's office now, explain the situation and see if the school can go ahead with the registration today; while you straigthen out the vaccination problem. It's worth a try, the worst they can say is no.

Good luck!

I understand how frustrating this can be. We moved from California , lived in Louisiana for a bit then Mississippi. When it was time to register my DS for kindergarten I had 3 different immunization cards - the lady I talked to at the school was very nice and explained that I needed to have everything printed up by the Dept of Health in MS, they wouldn't accept another state card but that the Dept of Health can combine them and print up the immunization report - so I took all 3 cards in and they printed it all on one sheet and then we were all set. Maybe your DS's dr can transfer everything all on one immunization card for the state that you are currently in. Hope that it all works out.

In our state, a certain form has to be filled in by a physican or health care dept office. Everyone submits the same form - does TX have such a form, and if so, that could be the issue. If your peditrican already has the information, perhaps they could fill out your required form and sign it (the ped. office has the forms in our state) and you could just pick it up from them.

Disneyglobegirl - I think that is what needs to be done. So frustrating. I just wish there was somewhere that they would tell you this before you show up.

DH called the district offices and they said because our school is new (the 05/06 year was it's first year open) and it is kindergarten only if we did it by the end of the month we should be ok. He called the school and told them we would be there on Tuesday. She apoligized to DH for upsetting me after he explained to her that we were pretty new here and never had a child in school before. Which was nice because she was pretty mean and unhelpful.

So I guess Tuesday it is. They are closed tomorrow and they only take registration from 8 until noon so I guess I don't have to worry about too many people between now and then.

The guy at the district office also told DH that they won't register any one with contracts to build in the area unless they have a scheduled closing date. This school is primarily in a growing area. We live in 1 of 2 neighborhoods that are complete, the rest still have new construction so I don't know what those people will do.

Explain to the superintendent that your DS is up to date and you are not asking for special consideration, just the same consideration that the illegal aliens get.

I don't think so but then again I don't really know. All I have is the forms the school gave me to fill out. The checklist the preschool gave me just says "immunization records" not a specific form.

The only real direction I got from them was "see your doctor" and come back. So that is what I'm doing. Guess I'll know more monday if there is a specific form I need.

What is frustrating is that I saw our Dr on the 7th and she said everything was in order. I called them and because of Good Friday they aren't scheduling appointments tomorrow (only emergencies like Sat and Sun) so I have to wait until Monday.

I'm sure that your district has a web site. Check it out, they always list the form numbers and what is needed to register a child.

This is the cut/paste of things to bring with you

1. Original State/Country Birth Certificate
2. Social Security Card
3. Complete and up-to-date Immunization Records - Please see state vaccination requirements as listed on our “immunizations” link.
4. Valid Picture I.D. of parent or guardian registering student
5. Proof of Residency—The ENTIRE Electric OR water bill in the name of the parent or guardian enrolling their child/dren, for the home in which you are living with your child/ren within our attendance boundary, or a signed lease agreement for an apartment or home within our attendance boundary that lists each child being enrolled as an occupant.

So it says nothing about specific forms. It goes on to say
Registration packets will also be provided at our registration tables on the above dates and times. Please be prepared to spend from 20 – 30 minutes completing the packet. Wait times for registration completion will vary depending on the preparedness of, and number of those enrolling. On average your wait time could be from 15 minutes to one hour. Registration will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

He IS up to date on immunizations. I think the problem is that his records are 3 copies of papers from Dr's charts rather than one original easy to read document listing everything. So on Monday our Dr will create a list of the immunizations and hopefully he'll get into this school.

If not I'll have to take him somewhere else for kindergarden. I just remembered that his preschool is starting a private kindergarden next year so while I was looking forward to a $625 a month 'raise' if I have to he could always stay there.

Man, that's absurd!

We registered back in March. We had to bring in the residency proof, birth certificate, social security card, etc but the immunization record isn't due until right before school starts.

It's never easy whether it's your first or 10th child. They keep changing the rules.

We go in to register our 4th for K at the end of this month; I looked at his shot record & noticed he's missing 3. *sigh* He's going to love us after he goes to the doctor next week.

I'm sorry you are frustrated. But as a school nurse, I see where the school is coming from. You have no idea what a fight it is to get shot records from people. So because some parents are so difficult, schools have to crack down on EVERYONE. And it sounds like they don't know you from Adam, so why would they trust you if you said, "But he is all up-to-date on his shots even if these papers don't show it". Did they give you a list of the shot requirements before you went in? What shot did they tell you he is missing?

The main question I have for you is. . . Was this an RN you talked to? If so, if she was a good school nurse she would have told you exactly what your child was missing, given you a letter saying what he was missing, and she would NOT have given you a hard time about having several papers with the shot records on them as long as they were properly documented (shot, date, clinic name, etc). If the district does not have RN's on their campuses, this is further proof of the benefits of having a professional nurse on school campuses.

I vax my kids, but if I were faced with this kind of thing, I would fill out the state religious and/or philosophical exemption from vaccination and bring that in, along with a copy of the state law allowing for such. The schools hate that!

:grouphug: to you RadioNate!

Here in CT, we have a Health Form that the Dr. has to fill out with all immunization info, height, weight, eye test, hearing test, allergies, asthma info, etc....

To register DS for Kindergarten, we didn't need any proof of residency, state id, etc.... They didn't even want to see DS's social security card, as long as I gave them the number.

Good Luck with getting everything straightened out. In all likelihood, the registrar just couldn't figure out how to read three different immunization records. (When we moved, our current doctor transcribed all of the kids' immunizations into her records. So, our current ped. has one master list of all of the shots. It may be that's what you'll need.)

That is exactly what I was going to say. You can claim that you dont believe in it and sign a waiver. In our state (WA) you agree to keep your child home if there is an out break of various illnesses, if your child does not have all the vax.

My daughter had one shot 4 days to early. Our county allows one of them to be 6 days before their birthday. I didnt know, and she had them 10 days before. The school wanted me to get it redone. I refused. So, I had to sign the waiver.

Radionate~ That's too bad that don't provide the form numbers, they really should. Hopefully, everything will be taken care of when you see the doctor.
