They think we're nutty or are they just jealous?

Reading some other posts has really got me thinking. Is it common for non-DVC friends and family to "poo poo" on DVC? They treat it as though it's some kind of cult because we take several trips to WDW a year or even once a year for that matter. One family member that recently went down to Orlando for a business trip stopped in BWV (while staying at the Swan) and returned with a report saying "Boardwalk was ok I guess, but Swan was really nice." I just didn't really say anything. I think my family was a little perturbed with our DVC purchase as it will make it more difficult for them to "stay" in the same hotel as us if they do vacation with us. Of course we will probably rent a "shabby" old GV for their sake but I'm sure it will be nothing compared to the Allstars..... ;)

I wish everyone could could just share the love.....I've almost got to the point that I don't mention DVC or Disney for that matter as I can tell that it evokes so many negative responses :rolleyes2 and I dare not mention it to a non-DVC timeshare owners.

This is why we have not told anyone in our family except our parents that we own. His cousins are extremely competitive and down right rude. They own beach time shares in the south east. They already think we are weird for loving Disney as much as we do, no sense in adding fuel to the fire.

A friend of mine bought at OKW in the mid 90's and I thought she was nuts too. Until I saw it....... :goodvibes

I am a member, and 3 other people at work are members.....others look at us like we are crazy I think, for the most part, that the people that "poo-poo" on our membership either don't understand it, or just aren't "Disney" people.

I have several friends that could easily afford it, but just aren't into it. They spend their money on sports cars, expensive furniture for their house, and other things, but just cannot understand why we need to take so many vacations and do so much Disney stuff.

Folks either get the Disney thing or they don't. No sense wasting your time trying to convice those that don't get it.

Of the 5 kids in our family, I was the only one who got hooked on Disney (I'm 42 now with 3 kids and one grandkid). My two youngest are 9 and 10, and we're going down in May. We last went about 15 months ago at Christmas. It's time to get back home, so I can't wait for the May trip.

Of course, I have friends who when I mentioned I'd be taking a week vacation to go to Disneyland questioned me as to why I'm going there again, since I "just went there" (15 monts ago!) "Why not go to the Grand Canyon or someplace else." We are taking a week vacation to Eastern Oregon this summer. We do go other places than Disneyland. But for me, an annual pilgrimage is pure heaven.

I'm hoping my daughters pick up the Disney bug.

My sister who also has 3 kids went (I believe) about 3 years ago, and they plan on going again when the kids are in their teens. So for her, going to Disneyland *twice* during the entire time her kids are growing up is sufficient. And other relatives are even worse. They figure *one* trip is plenty enough for any kid growing up. After that trip they can check Disney of their "list of things to do with their kids", and move onto the Grand Canyon, or Yosemite, or other places.

Perhaps it's like skiing. I know plenty of folks who go skiing, hiking, or rock climbing several times a year. A few who go skiing every other week during the winter. They love it. Perhaps for us, Disneyland is like skiiing. It's not something you do and are done with. It's something you enjoy so much that you just want it to be one of those lifestyle things that you do on a regular basis because you enjoy doing it, you get away from work, and spend excellent time with your family and loved ones.

BTW, we do have one friend of the family who does get it. She was married at WDW, and if you are ever playing Disney Trivia -- you want her on your team! Unfortunately, it's never worked out that her famiy and ours have gone at the same time. She'd be great to go with. Hopefully we can make it happen someday.

Some song says "make the world go away". Disney not only does that, but puts us in a whole new magical world for a while.

I can't imagine being jealous of someone who needs to own a time share to be able to afford staying in a nice place.

I am jealous of the people who call on monday to book airfare for tuesday, and then take off for a week in orlando at the GF.

Now that must be nice............

I am jealous of people who have no concerns of having to purchase a DVC time share to keep the cost down.

I wish i could pick up the phone today and book first class airfare for thursday, and stay at the GF, with ZERO concerns of $.

To ME, that is worthy of being jealous of.

A DVC time share is well in reach of 90%+ of anyone who wants one.

B3, I can't disagree with this one. People with "real money" have no need for timeshares. They go where they want when they want. I'd like to think I have "real money" but still love my DVC. I can see selling down the road as our ability to travel all over increases. We have a 4 year old so that limits what is possible right now. I see where you are coming from with this.

that's what I said........ or atleast tried to.

sometimes I stare at point charts, and wonder to myself, why i suck so bad.

I need some cash, so i can do away with this stuff.

You have an interesting perspective - the median household income in this country is just above $43k, I don't think DVC is within the reach of most people. Especially when you factor in that most of the United States lives either flying distance of a significant investment in gas money to use it. And that once you are there, Disney World is not a cheap vacation.

Although I understand what you are saying - you are jealous of the people wealthy enough to stay where they want. Other people are jealous of anyone who goes on vacation.

I think most DVC naysayers actually aren't jealous - they just "don't get it." I know a lot of people who have cabins "up North" and its just something I don't get.

my next buy may be a qtr share.

13 weeks a year.

pick a nice ocean area where it is warm, and just settle in.

I agree - even with the "up north cabin thing".

I also don't get hunting and fishing. Have often asked DH how many "dead Duck" and "Dead Fish" pictures a person needs. Apparently, those who "get it" can't ever have enough, LOL.

Best wishes -

I don't care what people think of what I do with my own hard, earned money. It's no one's business but my husband and I's.

Some people like to travel, some people have second homes on the lake, some people have chalets and go skiing and some people do absolutely nothing at all regardless of their financial situation. I happen to not care about what anyone else is or is not doing.

Just enjoy life.

B3 I don't really agree with you on anything much, but I get where you are coming from with this. My sister is coming for my wedding (married to the VP of one of the biggest companies in Atlanta, their kids even have their own private limo to school, no joke and BTW she thinks that any timeshare owner is a "redneck") I offered to help her book accomodations at a DVC using my points for her stay. She declined and said it wasn't worth the trouble and also gave me a hard time about owning a timeshare. Instead she called her husbands secretary and booked the Walter E. Disney Suite for 3 nights. Now, that to me is something to be really jealous of, I think that thing goes for $2,000 a night :faint:
To think I was simple minded enough to believe that she would want to stay in a scuzzy old DVC villa :confused3

I'm with you! :thumbsup2

However, that said, we've found that those family members who talk negatively about buying into DVC and our frequency of vacations usually quiet down real fast when we offer to take them with us. Funny, its not an issue to them then!
