they Didn't Want to Leave!!!!!

I would bet the late leavers were CRO cash guests, given that NYE was a saturday night. Maybe owners that rent points should put something in the contract...like "renter agrees to pay an additional deposit of $xxx, if renter leaves resort late and points are charged back to the owner, the deposit is forfeit...if no points are charged back the deposit amount will be returned to the renter."
Nice presumption.

But would the housekeeping staff have cleaned a room that was obviously still occupied? I would think that they would notify management that the current occupants had not left and they couldn't clean the room for the next family.

No the maids I have meet would clean it and assume the people would leave....

you know the Cont has a long time problem with this.

people were always arguing at the front desk but my reservations say.....

trying to make the last day go longer....

the Cont has a policy though - they would remove the luggage and kept it at the front desk. I don't think DVC resorts do this - so it easier for guests to take advantage of it - I hope DVC charges them BIG time for this....

evidently the people did not tell the front desk that they had decided to stay longer.....

Spiceycat.....that is just plain yucky!!! I just can't imagine them 'cleaning' a room that people were still in. Just imagine those poor next people that come in....the bed could have been 'slept' in, the bathroom used....heaven only knows what else. Oh man....I guess I'll be checking my room more closely from now on!!! Thanks for the head's up (I think!!).

We were told by the manager, Carl, that there were at least 5 villas that had guests in them that were supposed to check out on Jan 1, but had not by 11AM. We were told that the guests had left for the parks or somewhere else and had not removed their belongings from the room. Like they intended to return to the room. Should management remove the belongings and store them until the guest comes to get them?

When I talked to Sheridan, she said that Jan 1 had been a horrible day for the housekeeping staff. Probably because of NYE and people not leaving earlier than 11 and probably because of the messes they left behind. I saw numerous housekeeping staff leaving for the day around 4PM, but our housekeeper was still working at 5:30, so I guess DVC paid for the overtime at a holiday rate.

I don't think the staff forgot about it because of what Carl said to me about the multiple guests who just didn't leave when they were supposed to. Also, there was a Do Not Disturb sign on the door when we went to enter the room. It was not the same type that hangs on the door knob. It was the type that you slip into the key slot on the door.

I never expected that we should have gotten our first night paid for by the prior guests, nor by DVC. I was glad to get our dinner paid for and I didn't expect that. I just wanted to see what DVC would do to these rude "guests". The extra night's stay that DVC said they would be collecting from the prior guests should go to pay the salaries of the housekeepers who had to work overtime and to pay for the "dinners" that DVC feels they have to offer to the guests that had their vacation delayed.

I just wish they had a way to remove the belongings from the room so the room could be cleaned. But I can only imagine the complaints about missing items, food thrown away, etc that DVC would get from these rude guests.

The rude guests probably returned AFTER the maids had already cleaned their room. Wonder if it was really their room...hmmmm?
Why would the keys work if the system showed that the room was vacated and cleaned? Those electronic keys are supposed to be reset after checkout.

I actually believe it and the sad part... they were probably members who got there at 8 AM and wanted their room NOW!!! I travel a lot and unfortunately DVC members can at times be their own worst enemies. I have seen LOTS of DVC members not leaving thier rooms until WELL after the "offiical" check out time. (Some have even posted here!)

I checked out once at 9 pm which threw Disney into a tizzy. (I had to leave and had kept the room and paid for the night so I just stayed until the last minute.) However, there was a woman asking the guy at the counter next to me how she could get a late check out like me!
It's not that I don't believe some members would do this, actually I could see it happening. I simply feel it's far more likely that the staff was lying to cover their behinds though. I've seen quite a number of unhealthy, unsanitary and simply disgusting behavior from housekeeping over the years including DVC and elsewhere.

They told him that they had decided to spend another night or two!!!

I had an experience showing up at a hotel for a convention and was turned away with a guaranteed reservation, as rooms had not been vacated. The hotel was completely full, I believe it was the Marriott San Antonio. The front desk clerk called around until they finally found me a room at another hotel, this was like 11 pm and I was pregnant; he didn't even offer to pay my cab to the competitor's hotel.

I don't know what should be done but wanted to respond to this thread b/c we had a very similar experience at OKW last October...I have vowed to do my best never to stay there again.

Heather

LOL!!!
Our flight wasn't scheduled to leave until 8 pm, and we weren't due to leave on the bus until 5, so I just reserved an extra night. Okay, it was only an OKW studio, so was only 8 points...

When I checked in, the front desk asked why... and I said I wanted to be able to swim, and clean up etc, and use the room..... and they said THANKS.

And then when I left that afternoon, I called Housekeeping, and told them I was checking out early, and they could clean the room.

I really believe if members would help each other, we'd all get our rooms earlier.....
FYI - I'm at BWV now, and having a good time.... More details later...
Best, Goldi

The rude squatters should be required to pay for your first night.
I agree w/ this idea-your points or $$ equivalent for members stay should be credited to you or the room for meals or whatever.

There is no reason for this. The DVC resorts and other hotels in general are very acoomadating. We often have flights late in the day so we check out, have a day bag and spend the day at the pool or park or whatever. We check out, but we don't necessarily leave the resort. Most places will keep your luggage for you too.
This is just rude, self-centered, obnoxious behavior. I feel bad if I am 15-20 minutes after check-out time.

I once checked into one of the mods to find folks in my room. They admitted to the bellman who was with me that they had moved everything out in the morning, but then decided to come back and rest of a few hours... (This was at 6 pm....) So the room was empty and clean when housekeeping left, but the keys aren't inactive until 11 am or so... So if you get back in before they turn the key off....

I wondered at the time if these folks weren't trying to scam Disney out of a free room. You know if it's not full there is a chance no one would have ever known they spent the night there.

Let's assume the situation was as the CMs stated. Maybe I am a bit naive, but I see no reason to head quickly to someone's lying. The manager made a reasonable gesture and it sounds from the OP that the housekeeping staff really got the villa turned around nicely.

January 1st is likely one of the more challenging days for the lodging industry -- much more partying and often well into the morning hours. So more trash, more late sleepers. I can see granting some leeway to possibly 1:00 pm, but certainly not to the late afternoon. Charging them for an extra day at full rack rate seems an approprate reminder that the resort is serious about check out policies.

Our oldest daugher and friend were at WDW at the All Stars this New Years and got up early to go to MK on the first. Said they had a blast -- park was empty and they went from ride to ride, and on many turning right around for another trip. So the late sleepers gave those who got up early an extra treat.

I'm surprised Disney can collect rent from two people for the same calendar day. I used to work at an apartment complex here in Michigan and that is illegal here. I realize it's not apples to apples--different state, different type of rental. Just surprises me that they can collect from two people at once. Seems like it should have been passed on to OP.

Tehcnically the people leaving had a contract to 11:00 am and the people arriving had a contract beginning at 4:00 pm (I think that is check-in at OKW). The extra charge to the people leaving was for 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

This happened to us at BCV the Easter before last! We tried to check in at 4pm but some idiots left their stuff in the studio all day, went to the parks and didn't show back up til 6pm! The room was filthy, smelly and had stains all over the carpet even after they tried to quickly clean it. The wonderful Housekeeping Manager went up to check it out with us and took one look at it and gave us a 1 bedroom suite at the BC for that first night! He told us they got charged for another night, thank goodness!

That's the way it ought to work!
