"They deserved it!"

Last night on one of the cleveland tv news stations their was an entire 5 minutes devoted to this subject. They were interviewing a lady preacher formerly from N.O. She came out and said it was God who sent it for the evil lifestyle the people lead and so on. I was shocked they would have a segment on like this so soon after the hurricane.

:earseek: :earseek: Made me think of; :guilty:

"If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all."

There are a lot of idiots in the world who always need a JUSTIFIABLE REASON.
There has to be a REASON that a natural disaster hit New Orleans, because, if it was purely fatalistic chance, then there's a chance that it could happen to them too - and they simply cannot cope with that possibility.

A friend told me her mother said this as well. That the people in New Orleans were "bad" people (as well as where the tsunami hit) and this was God's way of getting rid of the bad people! Well until now I have always thought her mom was one of the sweetest (and yes, Chrisitian) people I have known. Now I have to wonder at her ignorance :confused3 What kind of church teaches this?

That's what my husband heard twice today at work. And it's only 9:30 am! He works at a bank and overhears a lot of customer/teller chatter and already two people have come in and remarked that the people in N.O. must have done something to piss off God because that's why the hurricane hit.

He already overheard this once before when the tsunami hit last December.

I know this is a small town and there are tons of God-fearing types, but comments like that make me want to pack up right this moment and move. I will NOT have my children raised around ignorant, close-minded fools like this!

:bitelip:

Well I would not want to be them NOW or when the get to the day they are judged. Pray for people like that!

Plain and simple, some people are just idiots.

I heard this 2 days ago at work.. She said that they make a big part of their income with gambling and thats a sin, so they have gotten the wrath of god.. Good lord.. I cant believe people really think like this..

How appalling. We don't need to blame, we just need to help people.

Its unfortunate, but people like that are a lot closer to the stereotype of Americans we get over here, than sensible people like you on the Dis!

Although my grandmother is convinced that people in African countries like having flies all over them, and that if they could be bothered they could have food... some people are just...impossible!

Some people are ignorant. Blaming a whole religion, whether that be Christianity, or any other religion(!) for those people is foolish at best. That is like saying all Muslims are terorists.

Frankly I find it much healthier to focus on the good in people. I know churches all over the south have opened their doors, offering shelter and food. Churches all over the nation are collecting money and stuff for the survivors. I've not heard anything but concern and a need to help.

Focussing so much energy on fools is a sad waste of time and emotional energy. It doesn't help anyone.

I'm not even sure why I looked it up, but it shouldn't come as any surprise that the church in Kansas that hates gays is saying "Thank God for Katrina" and of course blaming it on gays.

I mean you almost have to laugh at some of these people....the scary thing is some are DEAD serious.

Sadly, in a "spin off' mentality, I have overheard folks here (Chicago burb's) commenting about why bother sending aid there to these animals? The media coverage of all the crime/looters has sickened people (who do not wish to enable it) and they do not get to see as much coverage of the innocent, a shame.
Pam

I've heard many people say that...plus I have heard "well thats gods way of getting rid of the people who don't want to work and live off food stamps and public assistance"....and many others like that....I honestly don't know many people who have donated, and the ones that were going to changed their minds after seeing all the looting, guns etc...some have said if they knew the money would go to the other areas affected and NOT NO. they would donate but they won't give money to NO. Its not even a race issue because I know for a fact these people gave to the Tsunami funds...

It's downright shameful. When 9/11 happened this country came together like never before...Now it's like, some people don't even care that this is happening.

All I have to say is if I hear anyone spew venom like this I will NOT keep silent.

This idea that New Orleans is any more sinful than another city is ludicrous! And I don't believe that God "takes care of sinners" in ways like this. Why would he have sent Christ to the Earth only to "take out the sinners" later.... :confused3

Well this morning I have heard that the hurricanes follow the same course as the slave ships from Africa and are a punishement from God for slavery.

Gee, and I always thought that those ships (and hurricances) followed the prevailing winds and ocean currents!

Hey Free4life11, so I didn't know that all those people in Hallam were that sinful!!! God must of really had it in for them to wipe out a whole town. I'm really getting sick of the "Blame Game" for this, Well it was Bush, no it was Clinton, no it was Bush 1, no it was god, no they didn't send us enough money, (never heard that one before have we) I really don't think any of the officials were prepared for this, they just never figured that it would happen to them. Just my thought.

Wait a second, now cut me some slack! I'm a litle stressed out and that is NOT what I meant! I was trying to say that I don't think it's right when people say these things happen because God is punishing sinners (and the Bible says we are ALL SINNERS!), I worded it poorly.

Free4life11, you misunderstood my statement, ANYONE saying that NO deserved this needs to have their head examined. The Hallam was tongue and cheek comment, The tornado almost wiped Hallam off the map, and I don't believe their were that many sinners in Hallam!

My bad. I guess I should have realized it since you used a referece to Hallam. That was so sad.

I really wish these people would stop with the hand of God reply. As a Christian it really makes a bad situation worse. I knew it was only a matter of time until these kooks came out of the woodwork. I heard it here on local radio on Monday that the reason that NO was hit was because Tuesday August 31 was to be the firrst day of the Southern Decadence Labor Day celebration. Now mind you these celebrations have been going on since like 1974 but for some reason God chose 2005 to smite the party.
