That's what my husband heard twice today at work. And it's only 9:30 am! He works at a bank and overhears a lot of customer/teller chatter and already two people have come in and remarked that the people in N.O. must have done something to piss off God because that's why the hurricane hit.

He already overheard this once before when the tsunami hit last December.

I know this is a small town and there are tons of God-fearing types, but comments like that make me want to pack up right this moment and move. I will NOT have my children raised around ignorant, close-minded fools like this!

:bitelip:

Oh, Al...doesn't it just make you want to scream. No one deserves this. Some people are so stupid!

ITA!! Nobody "deserves" that kind of pain. People like that need to be *****-slapped!

If these idiots are that God-fearing, they should be praying rather than condemning. "love thy neighbor..."

Anne

I'd tell them there's another part of the Bible called "The New Testament" and they ought to read that part too some time!

He just emailed and said when confronted about his remark the guy replied, "Since the city's beginning, its been a sinful city and look what happened"

:earseek:

I know all christians aren't like this, but it sure gives a bad name for those who are. Every day I step further and further away from Christianity.

The childhood housekeeper of a friend of mine firmly believed that Hurricane Betsy (or Camille, can't remember which was the BIG ONE that year) was God's punishment for man having walked on the moon. She was never able to be convinced otherwise....

Well this morning I have heard that the hurricanes follow the same course as the slave ships from Africa and are a punishement from God for slavery.

Then another caller said the looting was also a direct result of white Europeans snatching peaceful Muslims and forcing European religion on them.

While I failed to see the logic (just before turning the radio to a music station) there will always be idiots who pull out their favorite arguments for anything.

This will be "blamed" on anything from the wrath of God on a liberal society to the heartless policies of George W Bush.

It is such a unchristian thing to say. I'm sure your children will be more influenced by your own values, but I would be concerned also.

To the first part of the post: I bet there are alot more people who feel that way as well. They just aren't stupid enough to say it.

To the second part of your post: that rings true for me too. I wonder if these small minded bigots actually think they're winning friends and influencing people by saying stuff like this. Well, actually they are influencing people...they're influencing me the other way.

yeah okay. Well glad I didn't tink off God since my home was one of the few unscathed for 2 hurricanes last year while we have had homes with severe roof damage and one that was just finally demolished due to damage.

:worship: Yep, I'm an angel. That must have been it. .

Disasters also bring out the best in people. Two bad those two your DH overhead didn't get that message.

This is why I have satelite radio.

Vette Chick-Ignorant people are every where-we are just seeing the worst in people right now-there are a lot more good people out there.

I grew up in a small town like that and it makes me sick to think that people still have warped ideas of God works. Makes you really feel sorry for them, they sound uneducated.

You knew those comments were coming. A crisis seems to always bring out the best in ALL people. It sure would be a better world if people would keep their sniping to themselves and roll up their sleeves to help one another.

So, how do these MENSA members explain the devastation of areas like Mississippi and Alabama (e.g. the bible belt)? Collateral damage?
