So far we 've been sniping at each other about a potential 1st Lady's faux pas (and as social blunders go, this one was pretty lame), and the hidden"meaning" behind the booing of Boston baseball fans.

Anybody got any real issues to discuss?:wave2:

I agree. It has been quiet here though for a few days! At least these threads today aren't quite as bad as the threads of several days ago when 'we' were bashing their children.

Anything to do with Bush or Kerry no matter how innocent it starts out will go South fast!

So what do you say, Beattyfamily? Want to start in on their pets? Or their choice of laundry detergent? You pick:teeth:

Politics aren't "real issues"? It's the future of our country. If that isn't a real issue, then I don't know what is.

:teeth: Unfortunately, I don't know what kind of pets they have! I love dogs myself...not much of a cat person...I hope they don't have cats!

Just kidding.;)

I meant like -- foreign policy.....the environment.....the criminal justice system....things that we should be talking about to decide who our president should be.:D

(I did hear that the Bush's dog was doing his business in the neighbor's yard and I think that is pretty appalling -- if you want to start in on pets!)

Sorry, this is a long post!

I was pretty much in the "Anybody but Bush" category before this week. For the first time in my adult life, I disagree with the President on almost every issue. And it scares me to the bone that major decision making in this administration is based on ideology--not on sound policy analysis. There are no checks and balances! And I do not believe it is healthy for America to be governed according to the agenda of the religious right. I fully respect the rights of fundamental Christians to practice their faith; but I also expect them to respect my right to make moral and faith decisions of my own.

I planned to vote for Kerry, fully expecting at least the House to remain in Republican control. I like a little bit of gridlock in our government. But really, my vote was against Bush, not for John Kerry. That was before I watched the first two nights of the convention.

Now I know it's all carefully scripted, but I also know the conventions are an opportunity for the party to tell America what they are for. I have been impressed by the positive nature of most of the speeches. (Shoot, the biggest digs against ideology I heard were delivered by Ron Reagan.)

I loved Obama's speech...

Here's a link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A19751-2004Jul27.html If you didn't hear it, you owe it to yourself to give it a look.

First he dispelled the notion that the Democratic party thinks the answer to everybody's problems is for the government to give money away:

Now, don't get me wrong, the people I meet in small towns and big cities and diners and office parks, they don't expect government to solves all of their problems. They know they have to work hard to get a head. And they want to.

Then he reminds us that we are all Americans...

Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America; there's the United States of America.

(APPLAUSE)

There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America.

(APPLAUSE)

The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states.

We coach little league in the blue states and, yes, we've got some gay friends in the red states.

(APPLAUSE)

There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq, and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq.

We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

If the rest of the week is as good, I won't be voting against George Bush, I'll be voting for John Kerry!
