These boards would be a lot more pleasant with a truce.

Okay, now seriously, don't you think, "Hmmmm, that's interesting" and "He's/ She's/That's really special" is a lot more incendiary than, "Oh get off it, you're full of crap and you know it!" :teeth:

I can debate whether I'm full of crap or not, but I can't if someone says, "Hmmm, that's interesting." I'll just be posting to myself!

So we will have posts like this:

OP: Bush is a lying criminal that should be taken out of the White House in handcuffs!

1st Response: I agree!

2nd Response: Hmmm, that's interesting.

3rd Response: Hmmm, that's interesting.

4th Response: Hmmm, that's interesting.

5th Response: He's special.

6th Response: Hmmm, that's interesting!

7th Response: What the heck is this thread about?

8th Response: Now that's really intersting.

9th Response: Is this a troll thread? Don't feed the troll!

10th Response: This is nonsense, someone report this to a moderator!

11th Response: Hmmmm, that's interesting.

12th Response: Have you ever stayed at the Poly before?

13th Response: Now that's special.

14th Response: Where can I buy Mickey sunglasses?

15th Response: That's special.

16th Response: Locked by DIS Moderating Team, no explanation needed.

:teeth:

I'm liking this better all the time! Will someone post something stupid so I can try it out?

Saffron: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

jrydberg: I LOVE the telephone hold message thing. I'm going to incorporate it!

just don't click on 'em if they bother you
The problem is that there is no way to tell which might be the rare, civil discussion, or the more common type which ends up, by about page two or three, being full of personal attacks and snide comments. I like a good civil debate, no matter what the subject. The more common type seen isn't a debate, it's more like a grade school playgound fight.

When we get to debating politics, religion, or money in the family, our phrase to turn it off befoer it gets extremely ugly is: "gee, that's very entertaining" which means shut up. This may not be the exact phrase but the words very entertaining have to be in there. Maybe this will help ya'll

Eh, pleasant, shmeasant. I personally like the fact that so many people actually do get all riled up about politics. We should get riled up, gosh darn it! The insults generally just make me laugh, whichever side they are coming from.

I know......hmmmm....interesting! ;)

No, really, that's a neat comment!! Just kidding.

:D

I can't believe everybody is being so cordial and well spoken all around this board right now! I can't even try my phrases out -- so I picked on you -- and I really was kidding.

Exactly how many m's does Hmmmmmmmm have? Maybe we should have a code:

Hm - I don't agree with you but I respect your opinion

Hmm - I don't agree with you

Hmmm - You must be an idiot, no offense meant

Hmmmm - You're definitely an idiot and probably aren't smart
enough to know I've just insulted you

Hmmmmm -Your head is so far up your rear you can see your own
tonsils

Hmmmmmm - You can kiss my *** you stupid ****** idiot

Hmmmmmmm - I think I have been banned;)

I suddenly understand all the "hmmmm...interesting"s that have been showing up in other threads!

Let's not forget Shortbun's suggestion of "Thanks for sharing your opinion" .... with a nice :D for extra perkiness!

It doesn't bother me -- I know who I'm going to vote for and nobody on the DIS is going to change my mind.

I thought the idea of this thread was to suggest that when things started to get out of hand, one should walk away with a non-commital comment. Not to simply enter any thread that is political and for no good reason make an inane post and leave.

Interesting how quickly this one went awry. The original suggestion was
Anybody out there game for a truce? I'll do it if anyone else will. From now on, when you see a really nasty, personal attack against a candidate, just say something like -- "hmmmmmm, interesting." That could be code for "what you just said really blows but I'm not going to contribute to the negativity."

and yet when someone made an honest post on a new thread about why they would vote for anyone but Bush ( have we not been assailed by posters to come out and admit we are for ABB?) several posters imediately jumped in to use some of the reponses suggested here.

The ABB poster made no personal nasty attacks against the candidate or anyone. She gave legitimate reasons for why she was not voting for Bush. So slipping in these answers serves little but to make sure the OP feels silly for trying to start what some might call a legintimate thread. It was mean in a middle school yard kind of way.

I seriously doubt if auntpolly had this in mind when she came up with such a good idea. Go back and read the ABB thread....and try to imagine standing around at a party and having someone make the statement the OP did....now picture the other guests responding the way some other posters did. Not a pretty picture is it?

Yes, unfortunately all the op did here was give the right a new way to be insulting.

There is no truce to be had with them because they don't want one.

The only up side is seeing a hmmmm...., where I'd normally read some outrageous right wing attitude, is much nicer.

Thank you for your opinion, Peachgirl.

(was that at all insulting?)

So you prefer the old hostile comments instead?

Forgive me if I've created a monster. And I have been having a little fun with this, but my idea is for when I get really ticked off at something somebody says -- like when someone once said that Teresa Kerry was ugly. This is just a stupid, unproductive, cruel comment. Or if someone calls someone a name for liking one of the candidates. My first reaction is to start slugging back. But now, I'm going to say something completely inocuous like, "uhmmmm, interesting." It will say all I want to say without contributing to anything negative.

I hope people don't start saying it in the middle of real debates.
