Well, I hate when Mickey Money gets used for other things. :( Mine mostly gets hit (By me dang it) to pay the lawn boys. I never have cash in my pocketbook b/c as soon as i do-- it goes -- all of it--- into the Mickey fund. Right now it's up to $1000. It would've been more- but I took a few hundred to CHarleston.

*sigh*

$3K more and I can go to the Poly.

"We're not gonna make it. We're not gonna make it!"
:}

Just a question??? I'm curious.

Earlier this week Shelly mentioned she had to get the okay and/or permission to take her son out of school for their trip.

Do you all have to do that at your schools?

I never imagined it being so "strict". Especailly in an elementary school.

Here we just tell the school the kids will be absent for a week or two days or whatever. We do not have to get the teachers or schools permission to take a vacation or go to a family wedding ect.

The only time here an absence is excued for travel is if it's a death in the immediate- not cousin, aunt, etc--- family. No vacations are excused at all. If the child in question racks up absences that have not been excused- ie: a dr's note explaining the cause- then after so many unexcused absences (8 I think in the lower grades) they call in a truancy officer nad you ahve to go before the court and explain why you can't get your kid to go to class.

It's dumb and I hate it.

I remember long ago- my mom used to take me CONSTANTLY out of school to go out of state- to the mtns, to Myrtle Beach, Savannah, Atlanta, Chsarlotte, etc on a whim. Just "wake up, Jo-- we're going out of town."

I think one year I missed something like 34 days.:confused::laughing: ANd I wasn't sick.;)

Since our schoools are given funding based on attendance and test scores--- they are adamant that you get your kid into class, no matter what the consequence.

Jo hit the nail on the head. In California, everyday a child is missing from school, they don't get paid from the state that day for that child. It all boils down to money.

Sea- how is Debbie doing?

Lake- how about Malik?

Debbie was back in the hospital the other day with a blood clot in her arm. I don't know if she is out yet or how she is doing beyond that.

Holy Cow!!! Truancy...Court!!

Any of you care to move north of the border.... great health care which is completely paid in full by our taxes, 12 months of maternity leave paid, elections that last only months not years, fun coloured money with loonies and toonies, and no truancy court if your kids are absent from school. :lmao:

Lake- how about Malik?

Thanks for asking about Malik Jo.
Unfortunately its not good news.
They gave him 9 months, but I am afraid it will probably not long now. He is now in hospital and sedated. We all just pray for peace and strength for the family.

We know God has a plan.. I just wish I knew what it was and why this sweet little boy with amazing blue eyes and adorable blond hair was chosen.

He's our little superman.

Have you seen this video Lake? It is really funny!

I am sorry to hear about this - his family is in our prayers.

Thanks for asking about Malik Jo.

:sad1:
Oh Lake, I am so very sorry.:sad2:

I do not understand at all the ways of God. But I am not supposed to, I suppose. Maybe if we could understand, we'd handle it better. I do not know.:guilty:

Prayers for his family's peace and for his as well.:guilty:

I am so very sad.

It's just a procedure here. No big deal. It's always approved. We just fill out a form and tell them some educational aspects of the trip, then the days missed are excused legal absences rather than unexcused/illegal - which is what it would be if we didn't fill out the form.

The schools in the south are much stricter, as JO mentioned.

When I was a SAH mom, especially when I was homeschooling, I used a LOT of coupons. The local newspaper did a story on me (AGES ago) when I bought something like 163.00 worth of groceries for 17.00. Best tips I can think of are to save coupons for stuff you always buy anyway (I'm pretty flexible, but on certain products I'm very brand-loyal), save coupons for new items you would like to try (a lot of times when they are brand new they will be on special), go to a store that will double coupons if you can find one, and compare savings with sizes -- we are kind of geared that the biggest size is always the cheapest per serving/use, but that's not always the case. If you have a $1 coupon good on any size, you can take $1 off the $3 large box and pay $2, or $1 off the $1.25 small box, and pay .25 :teacher: Best deal I ever got...I had .50 off coupons for Kelloggs cornflakes, and the local store had a special for 1.07/box (a loss-leader to get people into the store). They were doubling coupons, so I got 17 boxes of cornflakes for .07 a box! We were really pinching pennies back then, and so were all our neighbors, so I passed out boxes of cereal to half our apartment complex :rotfl2:

WOW KB :worship:

My prayers are with Malik and Debbie as well as their families.

I have been so sad today. One of my best buddies in high school lost his 5 year old daughter Catherine to H1N1 last night. He sent an email out this morning. That is all we know for now. No other details.

I know that God has a plan for this, but I cannot imagine losing a child.
