There's a snake in my house

My brother keeps snakes and has even had baby snakes. I'm not afraid of them as long as they aren't poisonous, but I would not have one as a pet. I don't like their diet. No circle of life in this house...

this snake doesn't eat crickets like normal pet snakes. its diet is very complicated and it likes specific conditions.

really, its in the better interest for the snake to just let it go back to its home. if your husband and children want a snake, go to petsmart and get everything you need, and then get a snake that you can care for.

Profound snake hater here........ even I feel sorry for the snake....... let it go- FAR AWAY from your house of course.

Oh he!! no! That "little" snake would cause a big divorce in this house! I don't like them one bit.

ok, even though i'm SERIOUSLY ophidiophobic (snake phobic) i do research for a (meager) living, so i looked this one up:

Hognose snakes are frequently found in the exotic pet trade. H. nasicus are often considered to be the easiest to care for, and captive bred stock is easily found. H. platyrhinos is also commonly found, but their dietary requirements can be a challenge for some keepers, and there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that feeding them a diet of exclusively rodents contributes to liver problems and a shortened life span.

This leads me to believe that some species of this snake are easy to care for, while others are not. OP, do you know which species of hognose snake you have? not trying to butt in, but with everyone so excited about the new pet, it would really stink if it died sooner than expected from what it ate.

NO WAY JOSE! No way, no, how, would I sleep under the same roof as a snake! NEVER!!!!!:scared1:

OK.... here's a plan..... Tell DH and the kids how the snake is sorta growing on ya and it's not so bad afterall..... then, tonight, after supper, ask DH and the kids if they are hungry for ice cream...as you are getting ready to leave, tell them you need to stay home to do something quick and maybe they can grab you a small chocolate sundae..... then, while they are gone.... call your neighbor over to take the slimy creature far, far away!!!!!!!!! :rolleyes1
Trust me, your family will get over it..... it's for their own good..... snakes are soooo ick!!!

You need to have the neighbor help because, even though I normally don't like to get others involved in this sort of thing, ...I couldn't even carry the box/pen that a snack is in!!! I would be crawling in my skin so bad I'd drop the pen and then we'd really have a mess on our hands!!

Good Luck!!

In my house the choice would be given. Snake for a companion and I move out, or I stay as a companion and the snake moves out. The decision would need to be made immediately, I'm not staying anywhere near a snake.

If you'd like to come over for dinner, you are more than welcome here. If you invite me for dinner, I'm busy that night:scared1:

Not sure on the exact kind of hognose. According to the "snake man," if we can't get the snake to eat, let him go. So, far, the nasty, little thing won't eat. Of course, then DH has said he'll go buy the kids a cornsnake. Oh, goody.....

He is kidding, right???
Tell me he wouldn't expect you to live in a house with a snake!! :sad2:

perhaps it's time for mama to put her foot down, lol. if the snake won't eat, it should be released, and the kids should get a kitten or a puppy. as i stated before, i am SERIOUSLY ophidiophobic and just seeing a snake in person would induce an immediate panic attack and hyperventilation. i could never sleep knowing one of those things was in my house.

i agreed to keep my brother's python once while he was working out of town (shut up in another part of the house) and it got out, and no one told me for a WEEK! well, guess who found it? i sat down on the toilet for a tinkle, caught a split second flash of a diamond pattern in the tub and i was RUNNING through the house w/ my undies around my ankles screaming for my DH. he caught it, called and woke my brother up (who had to be at work in 5 hours) and told him if he didn't come get it now, he was making a pair of boots out of it. my brother was ticked he had to drive all the way home to get the snake, but it serves him right for not telling anyone the lid on the aquarium was broken. i cried hysterically for the rest of the night and didn't sleep for several nights after that.

why did i tell this? just to give everyone a laugh, lol. hope y'all get the situation resolved, OP.

:rotfl: Thanks, momof1princess! Great story

Unfortunately, mama can't put her foot down. DH just gave in a month ago to let the kids have a puppy. He actually got them 2 puppies. So, he thinks its only fair that he can have a pet that he wants cause he doesn't want the dogs.

It's still not eating, so, I'm sure it will be gone by the end of the week. Maybe they'll forget about the cornsnake. The 2yr old wants a turtle and maybe she can talk them into that.

Kerrie, I'd rather have a snake over a lobster.

And at least you won't have to get up in the middle of the night to take it out to the bathroom.

a turtle would be MUCH better! if i were you, i'd REALLY talk up the turtle to the 2 year old when no one else was around, lol. show pics of turtles, talk about turtles...anything you can do ;)

you have a good point, the mutt-lets get me up all the time

and, you don't have to board or get a pet-sitter for a snake if you go out of town, they only eat every 7-14 days, all good things

still, they're pretty creepy, and the frozen dead mice they eat are pretty gross, too (oldest DD had to put one in my face to show me how gross they are, isn't she a sweetie :upsidedow)

Kerrie, I think you're crazy. :lmao: No way, no how would I be living with a snake. Had a little mousie problem in PA two years ago and I refused to go back. I don't like anything that creeps, crawls, slithers or skitters around. Nope, not a nature girl at all. Freaked at the idea of love bugs in FL. :scared1: Maybe you could tell DH you'd like to go Jeeping again and accidentally run it over? :confused3

Why are things so unbalanced? The kids just received 2 puppies? Who's taking care of the puppies since you said they all ready have lost interest in the puppies?
Your home sound be a safe haven & if you have an issue with snakes I would think your loved ones would understand & forget the idea of a snake.
IMHO I would also use this as a lesson for the kids that wild animals are not pets.

I will give my DH an extra kiss & hug when he comes home tonight because we would never bring something into our home that would scare or make the other uncomfortable.

Is that thing molting or does it have a skin condition?

Or is it supposed to look like that?

On the bar in my kitchen. DH brought it home today. He likes it, says he gonna keep it. The kids are very excited, too. They think it's cute and that it likes them. I want to shudder just thinking about it. I told the kids I was gonna throw to the hawk that circles the backyard. Everyone loves it and wants to keep it, except me. Looks like I'm outnumbered. The kids love it so much they forgot to keep an eye on their new puppies and the puppies found their way into my shower. I'm not taking care of it. I refuse to acknowledge the nasty, little thing. I asked DH what its name was, he's keeping it simple, it's just snake.

Here is the thing I would be afraid of, if the kids got distracted and forgot to watch the puppies who made their way to the shower, what will happen when they get so distracted that they forget to watch the snake????? :scared1:
