There has to be more to the story...

I lost the end of my ring finger at the age of 11 (sorry I don't remember the date anymore, but it was early in summer vacation) when my brother and I were fighting and I was trying to close myself into my bedroom, he was pulling the door open, and then he let go.

It hurt, and I was bleeding for 2 hours. I bled A LOT. A whole lot. (mom had just left for work, 1980, she worked an hour away and we had to wait for her to get to work, get the message, and drive back to us b/c our neighbor said he didn't have permission to take me to th ER so I sat there turning a towel red while watching The Love Boat and getting paler and paler)

And it HURT. And that was just the end of the finger, not the whole thing.

This dude must have been on heavy narcotics already.

And he would have been standing outside the room, with his hand in the doorway, when his wife moved her foot. He must have been looking away, into the hallway. So he wasn't paying much attention. That must have been a shock!

Not sure how it's the cruise line's fault, though.

Guess he can't sue his wife, eh?

(I wanted to sue my brother for a long, long time)

The question that begs to be answered is: Did they offer the man a medivac? He would've needed reattachment ASAP. If he turned it down then he sealed his own fate because DCL would've done as much as they could've at that point. I feel for the fellow. I had incomplete amputations of my left 3rd & 4th fingers when I was 4 (a REALLY long time ago in '79). I was rushed to the Pensacola Naval hospital a couple miles away where I was taken to surgery within 2 hrs of my injury. Of course back then reattachment weren't so common. They flew in a vascular surgeon from DC for me. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Thankfully I have my fingers but they don't function 100%. Still, I can type, play piano, etc. Thumbs are a whole 'nother can of worms. I'm glad the fellow is the age he is because that's a heckuva disability to live with.

Oh I know the date of my accident! March 10, 1979. My mom calls me every March 10th. She was a very young mother so I guess it made a huge impression.

My brother (6 at the time) & I were playing with an ax. Mom was asleep and we snuck outside.

My brother carried a LOT of guilt for most of his life over it. He always played it off all macho & jokes. It came up just a few short years ago when it was just the 2 of us together and he broke down telling me how it's weighed on him all these years. I never blamed him. We were very mischievous kids, BOTH of us. Glad we had that talk. In hind-sight I'm thankful for every last moment including the accident. He passed suddenly this past November and it's been brutal every moment since.

When I was in high school a door was closing a boy tried to grab it before it shut and chopped a finger off. Never put any part of your body in harms way. Always go for the door handle if no handle let it slam shut

Ouch!

My aunt sued my uncle when he shut the car door on her finger and she required stitches that left an ugly scar. Yes they stayed married. I think she had to sue him in order for his car insurance to cover the doctor's bills since they did not have any health insurance.

he went to the ships doctor but was treated by a nurse. That Doctor should also be sued. That Doctor should of contacted the captain and said we need to have a medivek to save that person thumb so it can be reattach. If the Doctor did and the captain did nothing he should be fired and sued also. Imagine spending almost a week without real medical attention after you just got your thumb amputated.

Assuming it happened the way he says.......

We don't know that. DCL could have offered (not required) it, but the person opted not to cut his cruise short. Or DCL dropped the ball - time will tell--maybe.

Um.... in re-reading the article linked in the first post, I find an issue - the victim says that the next stop was St. Maarten, and there wasn't the appropriate medical care there. And then the next stop was Puerto Rico (the next day), I'm not sure that the Fantasy ever went to Puerto Rico. Can anyone confirm that? And can they even make it from St Maarten to Puerto Rico overnight? It's 328 nautical miles - at 20 knots that's 16 hours.

I'm basing this on the fact that the victim reported it happened on the second day of the cruise (on or about) 26 Apr. The Fantasy departed 25 Apr that year. However she didn't depart out of Miami. Neither did the Magic (who departed 26 Apr from Port Canaveral). The Wonder departed Miami on Apr 26, 2015 but it was a 5 night cruise.

Good catch. And it allegedly happened just before dinner so I'll assume late afternoon. 16 hrs would've been roughly 8am-ish. Isn't there 2 sea days to get to SXM? Didn't the article say it happened the afternoon/evening of the first sea day?

He had to have seen a doctor if he went to medical. I cannot fathom that a nurse would give him pain meds, throw a bandage on, and pop the thumb in the fridge. He HAD to have been given pain meds. And wouldn't they have tried to close the wound at least? A NURSE did that? I don't think so. I just don't see this adding up. At all.

The Fantasy had an Eastern itinerary out of PC that left 4/25/2015.

saw that one too but the report said the ship sailed out from miami, not PC.

I think that may be an error in the news report. I couldn't find a sailing out of Miami with that itinerary.

The only DCL cruise out of Miami close to that time frame (26 Apr 2015) was the Wonder on a 5 night cruise departing on the 26th.

Captain's Gala is first at-sea night, right? So he went from night 1 to morning 3 before seeing a doctor? I seriously don't buy this. At all. I mean, I know how interested doctors are in these things. I was a bit of a novelty when it happened to me. If the guy went to medical I'm sure the doctor would've known. Even if the nurse didn't tell him/her which I highly doubt because how many amputations do they get, there would've been some evidence or record of it the doctor could see. Like a random thumb in fridge, maybe? I just don't think the doctor had no knowledge. It's more likely the guy opted not to take a helicopter ride if this actually occurred on the ship at all.

Seriously. If his thumb lopped off on the door there would've been a LOT of blood which the host would've been aware of. It would've required a hazmat cleanup and notifications up the chain.

No the Captain's Gala menu is semi-formal night (at least on the Fantasy and other 7 night cruises) and is typically the second to last night of a cruise.

The first sea day/night IS formal night, but could be a regular menu in the dining rooms or one of the formal night menus, like Prince and Princess. That's generally the second night of a 7 night and longer cruise.

I looked up some of the dates. I'm still having a hard time putting 2 and 2 together just based on the itinerary. I'll look more when I get on my laptop. The Fantasy departed as posted above on the 25th. She was in PR on the 29th. As far as I can tell she never went to St Maarten that trip. At least according to the port schedule I was looking at. She was in on the 8th of April and didn't go back until May. Again I'll look more on my laptop as my phone is acting up on top of my fat fingers. Just for giggle I looked and if the same site is cirrect, the Carnival Fantasy was in Miami either. I'll look some more and see if I can figure out both itins. There's also a 3rd Fantasy ship I could find so I'm starting to wonder (no pun intended) if they either are getting the itins wrong or wrong Fantasy.

Just out of curiosity were you on the trip? Cruisport schedules is showing that the Fantasy was in St Thomas on the 28th not St Maarten.
