The World of Wogging.

LL You are doing great-don't get yourself down. The eliptical is evil :scared1:
As for me did a mile walking with the little one in the stroller.

I did NOTHING today- which is okay because Couch to 5K only starts with 3 days a week. BUT I have discovered that apparently I DO have muscles in my thighs...who knew :confused3 :rotfl2: I am certainly feeling them today so they are there :lmao:

I am taking today off. I have to look at the Couch to 5K program, I think I am going to switch to that. :goodvibes

I did 2 miles on the treadmill last night at the gym. I played around with the speed and tried to bump it up when I could, for as long as I could. I managed to go for awhile at about 3.9 mph. Still wasn't able to get the 2 miles under 16 minutes per mile. I think I averaged about 17 minutes a mile. I took a bit too long warming up at 3.0 mph. I didn't realize it was going to be that hard to get my minutes it at the 16 mph rate. It's getting there at any rate.

The good thing was that this was the first time that I was able to get my heartrate up to the recomended training range. All my other times I haven't been able to get it up high enough.

Tonight is Zumba, so I probably won't get any walking in. My calves are feeling a bit tight so it's probably won't be a bad thing to miss a day. Reminder to self - stretch after walking!!! I'm looking forward to Zumba though. The instructor is very high energy and tough so I'll still be getting a good workout in.

I looked at that couch to 5K and I think its pretty reasonable. Everyone is doing a great job! Keep up the good work! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

C25K is a great program. Don't preview the workouts too far ahead (I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing in 2 weeks). It freaks me out when I see what I'm expected to be doing.

Running/Walking A High Tech Sport.

I started running somewhere around 1978. I worked up to where I was running for a full mile. At that point I bought a Runner's World Magazine. Wow, was I doing everything wrong. To start with I was running on the balls of my feet like a sprinter. (The funny thing about this was that I was in the military and we had to run for our fitness tests, but there was very little knowledge out there about how to run) I was wearing a pair of flat sneakers commonly called deck shoes. I didn't warm up I just went as fast as I could go, which wasn't all that fast, till I couldn't go any more.

This particular magazine was the annual shoe rating issue. The top rated shoe was the Brooks Vantage and I think number 2 was the Etonic Street Fighter. My budget didn't fit stuff like that so I went to K-Mart and bought some bright blue track shoes with little rubber knobbies on them. They worked better than the deck shoes and I got up to a couple of miles wearing them, in my cotton socks of course. When I did finally have the money for a pair of the Brooks Vantage I thought I was running on pillows. Oh my what a difference.

I was beginning to really enjoy the runs now, especially since I learned about warming up. Once my muscles were warm it really started feeling good. That's about the time I learned about balance. My lower back started hurting pretty regularly. I had been reading everything I could about exercise and I had specifically read, "if your back hurts it's probably because you have a weak stomach". Well I started doing sit ups every day and with in a few days my back stopped hurting.

I learned about cotton and chaffing, I learned about cotton socks and blisters, I learned about how to eat prior to running and through trial and error I learned what NOT to eat. Fried chicken an hour before a run will give you cramps about mile 3. I was learning something almost every day it seemed.

The important thing for me was that I was in the military and the military was ignorant about running. When I was in basic training we did our 3 mile runs in combat boots, fatigue pants and T-Shirts. I think the reasoning behind this was that you trained in the uniform you fought in. Trouble is you didn't learn how to exercise so you could do it on your own when you got out of basic training.

I was selected for First Sgt duty in 1987 and was able to put my knowledge to work and to gain a whole lot more. I worked my way up to becoming First Sgt of the Hospital Group, there I was able to work with Doctors, Physical Therapists and Nutritionists to design fitness programs for the base population. I even had a Kenneth Cooper's Human Performance Lab in Dallas on speed dial. He was the advisor to the military for fitness, he started the "Aerobics" method of training.

Our sports of walking or running have come a long way since our ancestors chased down game for dinner. It does seem though that there is new and improved everything on the market now. The problem now is if you pick the wrong kind of shoe it can really become a problem causing issues with your knees, ankles, achillies tendons and ITbands. You can be virtually crippled as a runner or walker by wearing the wrong shoes.

If you are going to pursue the sport of walking or running get as much knowledge as you can, you will be amazed how high tech putting one foot in front of the other has become.

Thanks for reading.

I am the exact same way. If I preview the weeks ahead, I don't focus enough on my current week because I'm trying to push myself to get to the future weeks workouts.

LL-I think that the 5K would be good, since it is only 3 days a week, but it gets you jogging the first week (alternating between 60 seconds of running and 90 seconds of walking). Maybe you can modify the walking the 1/2 marathon to only 3 days a week until you get strong enough to start jogging a little. I mean, we're still looking at almost 2 years from now for the 1/2 Marathon, so if you start at super super slow, it's not really going to matter, only get you stronger if you start out easy. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the background and advice. I have been thinking that the shoes I've been wearing have been the cause of my heel pain, as I was never bothered until I started with it until I started wearing these shoes to walk in a few weeks ago. I haven't run in them, but maybe the walking alone is bothering them.

I can't wait for my tax return money so I can get some good quality shoes that work for me!

That's what I'm talking about - when it starts to feel good!
I think the older you are, the longer it takes to reach that point. But it will come!

Keep it up everyone!!!!!!

Enjoyed your post Walking Panda!

When does it start feeling good because I'm definitely not there yet!!! :confused3 :rotfl:

Hope everyone is hanging in there and doing okay.

I think I had my first sign last night that I may be overdoing my workouts a bit. I was in my Zumba class and we were doing a routine that included lots of jumping. About 1/2 way through it I couldn't jump to save my life. My legs felt like they weighed about 500 lbs each and I felt weighted down to the floor.

I'm debating whether or not to skip the gym tonight. Maybe I'll just go and do just one mile. I feel like I want to go and do something and hate to skip a workout.

I'm so excited that my tax refund hit my account today, so tomorrow I can go out and get some running sneakers! Words can't express how shocked I am that I uttered that phrase! :rotfl:

It took me thre to six months! OK, I know what you are thinking:scared1::eek::scared::scared1: :sad1:But it really is worth waiting for. A runner's high does exist.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: Good for you! Try a bunch on and get the most comfy. Tyr different price ranges. I am very thrifty, but a good pair of runny shoes is definately worth the money cause they really work and last! Definately try Asics! They come in a varying price range and can found in all sporting good stores and kohls. The most expensive/top of the line are generally only found in a specialty running store or an online store.

I'm actually going to head to a specialty running store to try to find a pair. I am the owner of a pair of "problem" feet. Besides being exceptionally wide from years of ballet, I also have high arches, high insteps and have a neuroma in my left foot which can be exceptionally painful when it gets inflammed.

My attempts to find decent shoes are usually failures. They feel fine in the store, but after wearing them for a bit I'm usually ready to chop my feet off. I actually just bought a pair of Nikes not more than a month ago. Feel wonderful at first, and then I start getting numbness on the ball of my foot with the neuroma. I'm going to suck it up and be fitted by someone with more know how than I have. The extra money will be worth it if I can wear my shoes longer than a 1/2 hour pain free.

Let's just say I am anxiously awaiting the "exercise feels good" phenomenon. :rolleyes1 In the meantime, all of you ladies are inspirational! :goodvibes Half marathon 2011, here I come! :yay:

Good job everyone!

I've had a little bit of a set back. My ankles are so swollen and painful. I think it's becuase of my cycle so I am trying to take it easy. I'm going to go for a walk tomorrow.

I looked over the Couch to 5K program and I am not ready for jogging yet. I think what I will do is just walk 3 times a week for now and then take it from there. :thumbsup2

LL- something is better than nothing! Your plan sounds good! Remember -- progress not perfection! :goodvibes We have plenty of time to get ready for 2010!! :upsidedow

I took me about 8 months to get to the point that I wasn't saying "I hate this, why am I doing this to myself?" everytime that I went out to run. I do still feel like that when I am on the treadmill at home, but something is wrong with that treadmill. It is MUCH harder to exercise on than the ones at the gym or running outside.

I can't say I love running yet, but I don't hate it anymore.
